Totally agreed!

Wanted to post exactly the same myself!

Try the AGS help that comes with the editor. Contains everything you need and useful tutorials, too.
But, I'm afraid to say, it's of course all in English  ;)

*sigh*

I somehow don't really seem to understand your problem... I'm using rendered backgrounds and sprite PCXs as well and I do get full crisp quality. If you have large gradiented areas like the sky or so I admit that in 16bit the gradients somehow... suck.
But I don't see the necessity of such large gradients. Use cloudy skies for example.

But still it is true what we said about JPGs. They do not look bad to you or to anyone else, but try with transparency and you will see what we mean.

And concerning the file size: PCXs are compressed, you won't get much higher compression without significantly losing quality (and, as we all know now very well, this is not what you want)

They are converted to 16bit, not 8bit (pcx can be true color as well as hi-col as well as palette)
and jettooo is basically right: the JPG compression works in a way that somewhat diffuses outlines and clear color fields (ever watched a low-quality MPEG? It's basically the same effect). That may not be visible at first sight (that's why they do it that way) but you will get stray visible pixels outside your sprites it you apply transparency.

P.S. I advise you to turn off "anti-aliasing against background" in your renderer, otherwise your sprites will have strangely colored edges  ;)

Alright I'll try to talk in English ;):

You need to do some scripting for this (if you are not too deep into scripting, I suggest the tutorials in the game manual)
So...
There is a script function "PlayVideo (string filename, int skip, int flags)"
where "string filename" is to be replaced with the name of your video (the name must be set in quotation marks, since it is a text string.
"int skip" and "int flags" are to be replaced by numbers which you choose to your liking. See the help file again, there is a list of all flags.
So the desired command will be something like:

PlayVideo("vid1.avi",0,0);

As I said, it's just RTFM  ;D

Quotebut I search for something...
Do the tutorials. They will provide you with the most necessary information. Later when you search for something, I find it very helpful just to browse through the index. It is very likely that your eyes will catch necessary commands or functions just while browsing.

P.S. Sorry my first reply wasn't very helpful  ::)

There's the PlayVideo() function built in.
Make an .avi or .mpg file, place it in the \compiled folder, add the PlayVideo() and there you go!

P.S: RTFM!

Critics' Lounge / Re:Crypt design

Thank you guys! I tried some things you suggested, and here is the result:

or, with shadows (the shadow-relevant light source is where the moonlight hits the floor... Some kind of fake-radiosity):

As you can see, I have also added the sarcophagi and a cross.

and, to Andail: This room is not really meant for runnig around a lot. There will be an interaction with a ghost character and some puzzles with the sarcophagi (which I will render as close-up images). It is more meant to generate an atmosphere rather than draw the eye to details...

Critics' Lounge / Crypt design

One set in my game is to be a medieval crypt of knights.
below you can see the first prototype:

The spaces to the left and right are to be filled with sarcophagi of the knights.

I kinda like the lighting and I want to try without adding further light sources (like torches).
But (even imagining the sarcophagi), it feels too... say, clinical. I want it to look cold and gloomy, and not too ornamental, but at the moment it's too simple for my taste.
I'd greatly appreciate any form of criticism!

Just a small, stupid question:
how much higher are your sprites than your character?

I think that it is the bottom of the sprite which is checked against the baseline, not the bottom of the actual visible character.
Maybe that's why you have to set the baseline so low.

You're not the only one... reload and this time keep your cursor off the GUI during the cutscene... ;D

Ever heard of doors? There's one in the fence. Open it and all will be fine.

So, and here comes mine!

There's one thing I don't like about your Script Editor (otherwise it's great):
In Win2k (don't know if it behaves different on other platforms) it completely blocks out the ags editor.
Which means that I cannot, say, manipulate dialog options in the ags editor and write the dialog script without having to close the script editor every time I want to switch back to ags.
It even prevents the ags window from refreshing, so when it pops up over my dialog options, they are obscured, because moving the editor window around leaves "ghost" images of the script editor behind.
This also prevents me from using the ags helpfile (and I cannot bring it up from the script editor)

So, I'm afraid to say, I have returned to CJ's editor after a short time.
(But I'm really really sorry! ;))

P.S. I have v1.62

Advanced Technical Forum / GUI in 640x480

Hi!

Is there any way to create high-detail GUIs in 640x480 res? (i.e. not just a scaled-up 320x240 res GUI)

Check out which kind of speech style you have selected at the general settings.
Your description sounds like "Sierra Style", I think switching to "Lucas-Arts"-Style will help

Er... Sorry...
Ever heard of Platformerius?
In the games/non-adventure section, there's a game called
"Platformerius: The Ninja Incident (by 2ma2)"
which does exactly what you want and the download comes with the full open code.
The engine is pretty fast and works astoundingly well.

Just wanted to inform you, in case you get several identical solutions  ;)

I had exactly the same problem and had to restart the game. The next time I played, however, the problem didn't occur...
Smells like a minor bug to me.

Sorry to ask for THAT:
What exactly is the "secret" puzzle?
