I thought there was a variable for turning characters 'off' but apparently it's gone nowdays.

You are talking about the 'on' property I think. I just tested and it still works in V3.12 at least.
(say, use player.on=false; to make the player character disappear.)
However, this feature is never supported (it is not referenced in the manual and will not appear with the auto-complete function of the script editor), so use at your own risk as it is not always guaranteed to work.

Oh my, yes, that is what I meant, and I tried it but it didn't seem to work... Although, might've been I tried 'On' and never thought to uncaps it. But cool :=

...

EDIT: Are you sure you have the room set up properly? Because the code seems ok to me after a bit of reacquinting myself with the object coordinate system...

If I'm around I'll surely drop in. Have to see how my schedules for the day work out but so far seems like I'd be available on the evening.

General Discussion / Re: Who has 5.1?
Fri 25/02/2011 14:15:22
I've got an old, ridiculously tiny 5.1 speaker system, but I routed the back speakers to work as doubles for the front as I don't have anywhere to put the back speakers  with their rather short wires. And I'm only using the set since I haven't gotten new ones, but I do like the surround effect. I'd just need decent speakers, which cost monies I don't have.

Funny thing, the Realtek drivers work just fine for me on Windows 7, never given any real problems.

5.1 headsets (real ones, not some USB emulated-ones) are made of pure crystal and fairy dust and last for 4-5 months max, and are very expensive to replace.

I had proper 5.1 headphones, cost 30e and lasted like three years of getting dropped on the floor every now and then and such... Maybe the sound wasn't ideal, but it was good enough for me for the money.

If you need harsher vocals or an extra electric guitar drop me a line. I also have quite decent recording equipment present and some experience with mixing stuff, but that probably isn't much help at this point :P

I am suggesting the server is coded somewhat badly, because it seems with even the slightest packet loss in the connection I get disconnected a lot, and sometimes it just corrupts the thing without warning. Pick any multiplayer out there, I can play it fine, connection wise. Then why not Minecraft? Because the netcode is bad. But, as said, it's beta, and there's a flaw right there that needs fixing. If it's still there in the retail release I'll start setting up a barricade to climb onto, but for now I'd just try to deal with it. I'm losing quite a heap of stuff too, mind you. I don't magically get to keep, say, a deleted character's inventory.

Clearly the problem lies with Ishmael's connection or system but the fact that the server outright CRASHES when it is sent incomplete profile information is plain unacceptable.

The profile files are on the server, and when I connect and the server loads up the profile file it crashes. Deleting the profile file from the server fixes it. So how exactly is this at my end?

As far as I understood if you buy the game now you get the game and you own it through release and everything, but you no longer get any expansions or the like for free, unlike people who bought it during alpha.
#30
Thanks for the effort, but nothing's changed. And I don't feel like fooling with this anymore, so no need to dig further.
#31
Since Galen here refuses to stop being an idiot can anyone else give me a hand? Wouldn't want to break the server again.
#32
I'm in a bit of trouble, might someone lend a hand? I suppose I am sunken into the sand near the big apartment building, there used to be a hill, and now there were a couple of small holes with water in them right next to the road in construction through there... Not sure what it ended up as, becuase the sand collapsed around me, I got an illegal stance error and disconnect, and now every time I reconnect I get the same message. So if anyone has a clue of where I might mean, could you dig a nice couple of layers off around there, might get me out of there?
#33
It keeps disconnecting me every now and then with random errors, and probably logs those. No idea what is an illegal stance tho, if I'm walking forward on a level surface and suddenly just fly out with an "Illegal stance" message...
#34
Hey, stop deleting my character if it still works, which it did last I logged off!
#35
I was going to get to fix up a safe zone at the spawn as soon as I got my current constructions somewhat done... First thing to do being setting up torches in a large enough radius around the spawn zone to stop monsters from being right on top of you own spawn most of the time, then thinking of something of a wall or such. But then the server died and everything.

I don't think this is an issue with a crappy server,  I think it's an issue with crappy software.

Pretty much. No matter which server I've tried it's been the same, and I know my connection has a small loss percentage. It's very sensitive to those. I think the server is fine, but the game's alp-- well, in beta, so this sort of stuff is what should be on the workbench and getting fixed in the near future.
#37
It seems really sensitive to connection issues. It's been a bit better for me since the beta but in alpha at times it was hopeless, because I get a small percentage of packet loss on my connection, probably due to the odd wireless setup I have to be on for now.

Some have reported lowering view distance below the max helps with the disconnects. And I think it actually did for me too. Not ridding me of them completely but reduced the frequency at least.
#38
Yes I'm a complete random and it was a character corruption issue that was rather hard to tell on the non-server end from the same ping timeout everyone else was getting.
#39
Are the monsters actually harmful already or just in the way still?

Also, keeps timing out on join.

General Discussion / Re: Leslie Nielsen RIP
Tue 30/11/2010 15:45:11
Like someone commented somewhere, comedy as we know it has died.

For some reason my favourite moment with Leslie goofing around is from Wrongfully Accused, where he is in a hospital trying to steal two large suction cups from some construction workers installing window panes.

Admittedly some movies he was in were just plain bad, but still he managed to be entertaining in them.

Quote from: kconan on Mon 29/11/2010 11:43:23I recall Nielsen did a little known direct-to-VHS golf instruction video sometime in the 90s, which was good fun.

My dad has that, it -- as well -- is hilarious.
