Well, I don't think this is theoretical at all! It is quite pragmatical: voting for yourself in "politics" is a symbolic act with no statistical relevance. Candidates vote for themselves just to assure the confidence in their campaigns. But in council decisions, voting for yourself is prohibited, for obvious reasons. In the case of this community, allowing the candidates to vote for themselves has a significant result: it gives some advantage to the proud ones, who always think they are best, and some disadvantage to the humble ones. I don't think voting for yourself should be encouraged in this case. Disallowing candidates to vote for themselves is a common measure to minimize this.
Another problem in this kind of competition is that people tend to vote because they like the author, not necessarily the work. Influential people, or people with more friends, will get better results.
