Critics' Lounge / Re: The DREAD of the DEAD

I think that was much better!!

But if I were you, I would also add something on the top right part of the farm area, partly behind the cliff edge. This would make the entire cliff edge look like a cliff edge. I kind of lost the perspective when I didn't look at the farmhouse.

Great work with the other bg's by the way ;)

The idea about having a farm there is good, but i agree that the cliff edge don't look like a cliff edge anymore, and that the roofs on the farmhouses are very much out of perspective.

What I would suggest to make the cliff edge look like a cliff edge is to put a house or an animal partly behind the cliff edge. Other than that it looks very good ;)

Hehe...really nice, but as Taffy said, WAY to much blurring. Except that i like the idea about being inside a nose :P Try with less blurring and post the result! I'd really like to se it ;)

Sure ;) I'll try it out. I'll post the result if the result turns out well ;)

Good idea;) Maybe I'll use that. At the moment I'm going with the idea that he unwillingly gets dragged into the whole thing, but maybe I also can use the part about Bob forcing his boss to make him the new boss.

Hmm...not a bad idea. Not sure I quite got it, but I'll do as best as I can to work on it.

By the way, as soon as I have made a better story and a better start I will publish a demo on the site. Please check it out when it comes (I will notify ;) )

It's very cute, but to me it looks like the mouth (upper and lower) and the eyes (lower) are changing colors for each frame. Maybe it's just something wrong with my screen :P

Not bad!  ;)

I like the pillars outside, but isn't pillars kind of greek? I think you should have a pyramid or something instead. As for the inside, I think it looks very egyptian-style, but i think you should add some lighting effects and details (cracks, holes, etc.) to the walls, and maybe have some sand on the floor (thinking of that there is a desert right ountside the door)

All other than that I think it's a nice bg ;)

Reply to Alun_Clewe:

The thing was that the boss, while being dragged along by the aliens, tried to leave clues on specific spots to tell Bob what happened to him and where he can be found. One example is on the fourth screenshot where the boss has written "help" on the door to the roof with something that is supposed to be blood (this to hint that he has been taken to the roof). Another example is where it says "help" in th corner of a poster saying: "Do you believe in aliens?" (this obviously to hint that he has been kidnapped by aliens)

These are the kind of clues I meant that the boss had been leaving behind.

the .jpg effect kinda ruins your art

I know...but it said somewhere on the site that I should post images in .jpg or .jpeg since .bmp is too big. Still my orignal bg's are .bmp. Just try to imagine how it would look ;)

I can't see any correct source of so strong light here

On the bg above you can see that I've tried to make a light effect inside by casting shadow from the tables, but I have really thought about inserting a lamp hanging from the ceiling. But if so...how and where? Simple redraws are very welcome ;)

Critics' Lounge / C&C on bg's and story please
Wed 20/07/2005 22:23:19
I'm working on a new game I've for now choosen to call "A painters journey", and I'm not quite pleased with the story.
So the story is as follows:

Our "hero", Bob, is a simple man working at a paint factory were he's treated like a nobody. One day at work he's thinking about life and how he one day will get back at everybody that's treating him bad, when his boss suddenl is kidnapped by an unknown enemy. As Bob sets out to save his boss, he discoveres that his his boss actually has been kidnapped by aliens and that he has been trying to leave behind clues so that someone can find him and rescue him. Bob now must solve his way through all the clues and puzzles so that he can save his boss, and perhaps rescue the world from a major threat.

I've allready made a lot of the game, but all the time I've had my questions about the story (have changed it a couple of times allready). Hope someone can give me some critics and hints for improvement both on the story and the following bg's.

As a first background I think this is great! I especially like the sky in the back!!

As for the rest, you could sure work on the perspective on the house and on the tombstone things(?). I also think there is something wrong with the perspective on the lowest step on the cliff in the foreground. To finish of my critics ;) I also think that you can make the ground and river a littlebit more detailed (yes I realize that you only have worked on this for an hour :P )

The lighting and the light effects are by the way great!

Good luck with your game ;)

First of all, nice tutorial ;)

To your comments:
-I agree on the table, but I'm trying to make it look a bit 3d'ish (using 3d flash animator 3.3).
-By gradients, do you mean ALL gradients, or just the gradients on the tables and on the tv? I'm not so pleased with the tv and the tabletops, but the walls and the sky outside I'm really pleased with.
-This is just a scetch, so objects and stuff are coming. Also the main character (Smyff) is supposed to be a bit poor, so the appartment is not supposed to be stuffed with things. I'd rather have cracks in the walls and so on.

Can bring screenshots from a higher-resolution game I have worked on. The screenshot in this post was from my first LOW-RES game. My mistake not stating that earlier. I'm working on another game in 640x480, but i'm not quite pleased with the story (guy working at paint-factory trying to save his boss that has been kidnapped by aliens). I think the puzzles are pretty cool though, and the graphics aren't that bad. Could still use help with character, if you would be interested ;)

Why, oh why am I thinking of Torins Passage right now? ::) I'd suggest that you throw away the whole mix-up-the-stories-of-well-known-old-games-to-a-brand-new-game-idea and instead make your own story ;)

This is the first room in my game. I could really use critics since this is my first game. Not quite finished adding objects and so on...
