Thanks for the help, Damien. I made a few adjustments of my own based on your ideas. I also changed the colour of her clothes. The new version is here:
http://www.2dadventure.com/ags/Luna2.bmp

Actually the light source is going to be in the upper right corner of the screen. But the background will have minimum shading anyway, so there's no reason to make the character any differently.

I think I should also clarify the concept. Your last version made her look like someone living in the streets, which I can understand given the lack of context. But actually she is just a regular girl waking up in the middle of the night, wearing only an oversized t-shirt or something similar.

Critics' Lounge / Character for my new game
Thu 13/09/2007 10:32:38
Ok, I've started working on a game for this month's MAGS competition - and any game needs a main character. So here she is. This is my first draft, and though I'm relatively satisfied with it, I think it could need some improvements.
Also, I'm looking for someone to animate her for me (I think getting help with animations is allowed in MAGS... I hope). Just a simple walk animation, or actually more like a slow and very stealthy walk animation.

NEW VERSION IN LATER POST

The game is going to be made using (almost) only grey and blue colours, which is why she has blue lips.

Thanks, Akatosh.
Assuming that my own homeland, Denmark, has an equal level of not-being-seen-that-much as Belgium, I think that will work for me.
And a certain level of insanity will be used, too. Nothing much, just a slight distortion of proportion, darker colours, maybe a few semi-antropomorphic objects.

I have a question about the "infreuently used setting" rule:
How infrequently does it have to be? Would any of the following count:
- a female main character's home (most games are bout males)
- a specific and not very famous country (most games use US, UK or somewhere exotic)
- The Real World - not something that just looks like it, but a (relatively) real place at a real time with references to real world events.

Could I "use a place in a non-standard way" by making it clear that the graphical representation of the world is based more on the main character's psychology ( =insanity? ) than the real world itself?

Would any combination of the above count?

(the reason for all these question is an idea I've had for a game for more than a year, and the other two rules fit perfectly)

Well, I was going to enter the competition with a short and not very original game that I was going to complete this weekend. However, my plans were ruined by the common cold. So I'll just have to try again next month. Good luck to the other competitors.

KING ARTHUR: "The lady of the lake, her arm clad in the purest shimmering samite, held aloft Excalibur from the bosom of the water signifying by Divine Providence that I, Arthur, was to carry Excalibur. That is why I am your king!"
DENNIS: "Listen:

Supreme executive power derives from a mandate from the masses, not from some farcical aquatic ceremony."
KING ARTHUR: "Be quiet!"
DENNIS: "Well, but you can't expect to wield supreme executive power just 'cause some watery tart threw a sword at you!"
KING ARTHUR: "Shut up!"
DENNIS: "I mean, if I went 'round saying I was an emperor just because some moistened bint had lobbed a scimitar at me, they'd put me away!"

It's working now. But I just realised that I haven't voted for some of the MAGS competitions this year, so I'll have to check out some more games before voting. I doubt that there will be anything like The shivah, but rules are rules.
And shouldn't the January MAGS have started already?
#29
For some reason my vote for the December MAGS (Christmas42) has been registered as a vote for the Maggies, though I did vote more than a week ago. Is there any way to change this? If there is, I would like to vote for The Shivah instead.

Unfortnately this month is going to be too busy for me to make a MAGS game (specially one with multiple playable characters). But I'm hoping for more spare time and easier rules in January.
"Happy Christmas to all, and to all a good-night" good luck with your games

Thanks, Radiant. I think I may have a title now and some kind of plot.

Do any of you know if there is a guide to making a game with more than one controlable character? I tried looking for one, but didn't find anything.

I also need some legally free music. Any ideas?
#32
Ok, thanks for the answer.
Now I just need to get an idea...
#33
I have a question:
Do you have to be able to change freely between the different controllable characters (like Maniac Mansion) or could it happen automaticly when it's appropriate for the story (like Still Life) - or maybe you could choose just one character from a number of different ones, thus having more than one way of completing the same story? (like choosing different races/classes in an RPG, but with bigger differences)

I'm not even sure that I will be making a game (or even finishing it), but I would like to know this before planning anything.

I agree with Mikko. DSCQ had a better plot than RON: Sixteen.
And that hopscotch joke made me laugh  ;D

post what you have so far... atleast that's what I'm doing.  :)
I would, but though I have finished almost all the graphics I haven't had the time to actually make a much of a game with them   :(

Well, an announced game doesn't mean by default that it also turns into an entry in the end...
Just realised a few days ago that Klaus was right. I'm not going to be able to finish the game I had planned... that must have been the third MAGS game I have begun working on without finishing it. I guess my plan was just too ambitious for a newbie like me. Some good advice to myself and anybody else in my situation (I know I'll have to remember this the next time):
- Never actually post anything about making a game before you're relatively sure that you'll be able to finish it.
- Think small. "How do I meet the demands of the rules and make an interesting game using as few rooms, characters etc. as possible?"
- Ignore optional rules.

I guess that was it. I might try and make a game next month if the rules are interesting. But hopefully it will be more than just trying next time.

Two questions:
1) www.worldofmi.com has a lot of fan created MI music. Can I use some of that for my game or would that be against the rules?
2) For my 5 inventory items from the list of unused items, I'm considering to use some of these:
- A plastic goose with a rope on the top
- Fine Leather Jacket
- Stan's hat
- Any part of Murray except arm and skull
- A badge that says "Ask me about -----"
- A Darth Vader helmet
They are all on the list and have not been rejected in any post. Does that mean that they are OK even if some of them might have been used in a game before? It would be annoying to have to change my plans just because the list might not be entirely correct.

I'm glad that there's three of us in the competition.

That's true. I think more games have been announced than finished in the many MAGS competitions. Let's just hope that this time it will be different.

Thanks, Klaus and good luck Buckethead and Juul.
Good luck to both of you from me too.
I'm glad that there's three of us in the competition. Winning because your game is the only one wouldn't be funny for any of us.

Is it allowed to use puplicly availble GUIs such as Proskrito's MI2 GUI?
Well, this is not really forbidden, but it would be nice if you'd adjust it in some way like working on the graphics for example - making it a little more unique.
I will adjust the graphics . I only need the coding.
