Hey everyone,

My Discord account got hacked. Please don't reply to anything you receive from me, until further notice.

For the safety, you might want to remove me from your friend list, too.

Thanks!

Hints & Tips / Another Musem

It's a pretty fun game, but I think I got stuck...

Spoiler
I have collected the Roman coin, two to go. I have opened the panel in the Chinese room that prompts me to type something in, I'm guessing it has something to do with the scroll I picked up in the Inca room. I have tried several words related to the Chinese template guardian statues: dog, lion, shishi, foo, fu, foo dog, fu dog and a few others but that doesn't seem to be it.
I also have the UV light which I think has something to do with the wall at the back of the Inca room, but I see nothing out of ordinary when I move it around.

Any hints? :)

Dear AGS Awards fans,

We may have just wrapped up this year's ceremony, but there is already plenty of amazing submissions for this year to play.
Why not start early this time?

Below is the link to the 2021 version of the games list. Feel free to make your own copy. I will be updating the list as new games are released and as I play them, updates in this thread are welcome too.
I personally like making notes of what part of the game impressed me the most so I don't forget to nominate it accordingly when the nomination phase opens next time. Otherwise it's easy to miss, especially if the game was released early in the year.

Happy playing!

Nicely done, TBP! But I think I'm stuck:

Spoiler
I don't know how to light a fire. I have found a log outside, but I have no tool to split it with. I thought it would be in the outdoor cabinet but the character won't open it.
Then I thought I was getting somewhere with the broom but again, no tool to cut the straw with. I'm probably missing something obvious?

Hi everyone,

As there has been way over a year since the last Background Blitz, with Gilbert's blessing I took it upon myself to attempt to revive the competition.
The theme for the current edition of the Background Blitz is...

Make a background featuring a mountain range of any type and at any distance. The mountains can, but do not need to be the most prominent feature of your background, but they need to be visible somewhere.

Deadline: the 2nd of October
Voting until: the 6th of October
Winner: lorenzo
Second: Deabriel / Flugeldufel
Third: Creamy

Voting:
Concept: Your background should tell us something about the place you have depicted.
Playability: Does it have clearly defined walkable areas, things to interact with, etc?
Artistic Execution: Does the image convey the wanted atmosphere? What's the feeling of the place?

Don't let the Blitz die, get an entry started today! :)

Oct 6th:
Below are all the submitted entries. Thank you everyone for the great turnout!

A siren, half-woman, half-bird is doing her very best to live peacefully on her remote little island.
But how can one hope for some peace and quiet if, for some weird reason, human sailors just won't stop washing ashore?

Hi guys,

I realise that this may not be the most exciting offer as the game has already been released in its MAGS form, but I thought I'd ask anyway in case someone was interested to play the game through a few times and report any leftover bugs or missing interactions?
I am also looking for someone willing to proof read the text. The more attentive and thorough the proof reading the better of course, but I will happily accept even a brief scan ;)

Important note: if you are interested to help please do not play test the version I submitted for the competition as many issues with that version will have already been fixed. I should have an updated version of the game ready for play testing in about a week from now, hopefully.

Please feel free to answer either via pm or by replying to this thread.

Edit: Proof reading help found! Thank you. Still looking for play testers.

Sgt. Reed has been tasked with descending into an abandoned underground facility, activating the power generator and opening the main entrance.
But things did not exactly work as planned...

Hi Critics' Lounge!

I am trying to come up with a nicer GUI for AGS Awards client to match the beautiful background by Ali at least somewhat better, and have started with the below.

What I aim for is a GUI with a hue similar to the warm reddish tone of the background image, just slightly brighter to make the buttons stand out better (not sure if this is the right approach though, or if I'd be better off with the exact colour balance from the background).

I originally made the gold set, then upon Danvzare's suggestion I tried a blue version with a hue picked up from the blue cup in the background.
The third version with uncropped icons is a variation of the first one.

Which version fits best? Or if anyone is able to offer an alternative suggestion, please go ahead.

Edit:
Here are the reworked sets:-

So, it took long enough but here it is! :)

That Place Past the Woods

Theme:
There is a place past the dark, thick woods that would surely attract anyone's attention... or would it?
Use the shape to picture a building: a house, a castle, a cottage, a shrine, a hostel, a police station, a zombie breeding farm.. anything!

Rules:
1. You can rotate or mirror the shape.
2. Very minor alterations to the outline are fine (1-2p).
3. You can use any of the two supplied outlines. I originally made the big one, but realized it *may* be too big to be fun for low res artists.
4. Waiting for submissions until the 9th of August.

Have fun! :)

SEASHORE

The task is extremely simple: draw a seashore. Any interpretation that comes to your mind is fine, as long as it is a seashore of some kind: a sunny beach, a stormy jagged cliff, an edge of a lush jungle, a crowded resort, an industrial port.. anything! Even a more metaphorical interpretation will work (sea of garbage? sea of flowers? sea of people?) as long as it evokes the impression.

Have fun :)

Create a background for a game that takes place in an extraterrestrial world. Include at least one distinctive feature to convince the viewer that this place is not Earth. It can be anything: fauna, flora, terrain formations, weather conditions, architecture or even different laws of physics if you can find a way to depict them.

Brides of
DRACULA

This Dracula is in serious trouble. Being a vampire lord just ain't what it used to be back in 1599. No more desolate castles, no more terrified peasants, hell, you can't even kidnap yourself a maiden anymore! Without getting police involved, that is.
But police or no police, a self-respecting Dracula just can't go without brides. Left with no better options, he contacted the local newspaper...

Classified Ads - Personal - Men Looking For Women
Vampire lord (35, apparent age) is looking
for a bride    (or preferably: three brides).
Good looking, honest, respected, wealthy.
Will meet females  (20-30) with affinity for
stone castles and unusual pets (eg bats).
Pictures required!       Serious offers only.

Did he get any answers? Provide the pictures of the potential candidates for brides, keeping in mind that:
1. They usually come in set of three: blonde, dark-haired and ginger. That's the latest fashion.
2. Any theme is fine - serious or parody, modern or historical (it's not that hard to rent a costume, right?). The sprite doesn't have to follow the style of the original (above) picture.
3. Dracula has a reputation to uphold (no brides, no vampire lord), so he's desperate enough to accept just anyone, not necessarily luscious vixens. Overweight? Plain? Dull? Fine, if nothing better comes along...
4. You can name your bride candidates and give them a short description.
5. You can be creative within the limits of the above story. Hint:
Spoiler
Why can't Professor Van Helsing use the opportunity to disguise himself and track the vampire down? Sure he can. He and his two accomplices.

Draw an infernal being. It can, but doesn't have to be of humanoid shape - a sexy succubus is as fine as a pesky little imp or even a large floating eyeball with tentacles.

Optional: name your demon and/or give a short description of what sort of havoc can it wreak upon unwary humans.

Have fun!

So.. what is this large silhouette on the left? A mountain? Some ancient ruins? A sleeping giant? It's up to you.

Rules:
1. No resizing, flipping or rotating.
2. Minor outline alterations are allowed.
3. Only a part of the picture is subject for this competition (the large shape on the horizon - look below), but you are free to color the whole picture if you like =)

And if you don't want to color the full picture:

Good luck and have fun!

So you are given this background, and your task is to create a sprite of a person or a creature that the main character would have a chance to encounter in this desolate world of dead trees, tar pits and ash fields.

Rules:
1. Your sprite must fit the theme of the background, which is a post-apocalyptic fantasy world. So, no power suits this time, though gadgets like old-fashioned rifles are allowed. Just don't make it scream 'hi-tech'.

2. It would be nice if your sprite fit the style of the background, but it is not required. Make it fit size-wise instead.

3. You are free to make literally anything, a human (or elven or whatever) being, a monster, an animal or a magical creature, as long as it has something to do with an idea of a devastated world (a mutated unicorn, a tar monster, a goblin junk collector etc.)

4. I'm gonna borrow ProgZmax' idea since it turned out really interesting and fun: you can name your character or creature and give them a short description. But this is not obligatory.

And again, try to follow the theme and the atmosphere, and not necessarily the style of the given picture.

Okay then, so after a real hurricane of entries submitted for the Camp Copycat, the sprite jam is back to the usual, 'trigger but a few entries' old form, I guess. Still, hope you have fun with this one too =)

So this is my entry from the previous BG Blitz, depicting Stan from MI selling a full stock of second hand adventure game characters. I thought it might be fun to post this as an 'identify them all' mini-competition thread. Every featured character comes from an adventure game. I know some of them look pretty generic, and for those I added a gadget or a specific piece of clothing that might ring a bell.

Feels like fun for anybody?

Create a picture of a place where a sorcerer (or a sorceress) lives, studies magick, creates golems, plots to destroy the world or capture a member of the royal family, performs tricks, raises zombies, patronizes the villagers living nearby, does voodoo, casts charms and curses, opens portals to another dimension.. anything you like.

It can be a solitary place or a house in the middle of an habitated settlement, can be merry or dreary, tiny or huge, fantasy, historical or even high-tech sort of place - it's up to you. Just make it obvious (or semi-obvious) that a magic user dwells there.

The magician is not required in the picture, but feel welcome to add them if you like.

Colors&resolution restrictions: I'm gonna quote loominous - resolution and colors should work with AGS.

Good luck and have fun!

In a dream I saw a silhouette of a woman, trying to lead me somewhere unknown. I followed, though no matter how hard I tried, her face eluded me. All I could see were strands of long, wavy hair and an airy dress flowing in the fog - or so I believed.
Suddenly, the shadow stopped. She turned her face to me and I saw...  uh, this:

... so, what did I see?

Rules:
1. It can be everything as long as it has some means of walking. Legs, wheels, tentacles, anti-gravity device - whatever. Just keep in mind that I saw this creature moving.
2. Try to make the colors stay within the outline.
3. No scaling and, attention - no flipping this time!

Good luck and have fun =)

Edit:
Quoteumm...Remember that flipping and rotating are two different things. So add rotation to the prohibited list if it was your intention :)
Okay so no flipping, rotating, revolving, twisting, side turning, mirroring ie. turning around a center point or axis in any direction.

I want to finally decide which graphics style should I pick for my game. I would be really grateful for opinions, if anybody would care to give one.

So basically I have this character sprite:

and this background:

and I need to make them fit together.

I suppose I have two main problems here. One is a saturation difference between the background and the sprite - I should either use more vivid colors for the sprite, or desaturate the background.
The other is that the background is painted and the sprite is pure pixel art. It doesn't yet mean they won't go together, but perhaps I could start a new set of pixel art-style backgrounds to match the sprite better. Or maybe simply resizing the background would do the trick, I'm not sure.

So I came up with these three possible solutions so far:
1. 300x240 background, warm colors + vividly colored sprite

2. 240x170 background, desaturated + vividly colored sprite

3. 240x170 background, desaturated + cold colors for the sprite

I haven't yet made a sample of a pixel art background designed specifically for this game, but it could be something of this sort (but a different color choice). This might be considered the fourth option, but I don't have a good sample for that.

Does anyone feel like expressing their view on this, or have other ideas? I know there's not much difference between them and all, but still I'm a bit puzzled.
