Thanks a lot guys for all your feedback and suggestions, very much appreciated! It seems the blue/silver version is preferred by just about everyone which makes things a lot easier.
I will try mixing the general layout of the bottom versions with the colours from the top versions as suggested and get back to you for more feedback.

Thanks again!

Sure Cassie, why not? Original post now updated :)

Thank you guys...! I have made a Crits Lounge thread with alternative versions of the GUI (including a blue one! =) if anyone would like to offer a suggestion what style to go for.

Hi Critics' Lounge!

I am trying to come up with a nicer GUI for AGS Awards client to match the beautiful background by Ali at least somewhat better, and have started with the below.

What I aim for is a GUI with a hue similar to the warm reddish tone of the background image, just slightly brighter to make the buttons stand out better (not sure if this is the right approach though, or if I'd be better off with the exact colour balance from the background).

I originally made the gold set, then upon Danvzare's suggestion I tried a blue version with a hue picked up from the blue cup in the background.
The third version with uncropped icons is a variation of the first one.

Which version fits best? Or if anyone is able to offer an alternative suggestion, please go ahead.

Edit:
Here are the reworked sets:-

2.

3.

4.

Has anyone taken up the GUI revamp yet?
If not, would this do?

QuoteI also love the artistic licence taken with the positioning of the rooms inside the ship to show things off to maximum effect.
Shhhh! No one was supposed to notice ;D

I feel a bit silly for posting this with a month's delay, but anyway - for Mandle and anyone else who wants to see the details of the cross section in its original resolution, here it is:

(Had to be resized on the promo art due to the host's image size requirements)

Thank you guys! Your comments mean a lot :>

Out of these, ALD may become a full game. There have been some harsh reality checks but we are still trying!
As for the others, I would very much love to make some of these into a real game one day but alas, life makes it hard to stay focused so all use I have ever made of them are Release Something threads... which is probably better than nothing ;)

@Blondbraid: The Lurking Fear. I always thought that with some minor adjustments, the structure of this one would be just perfect for an adventure game so I keep getting back to the concept once in a while. Can't really get it out of my head, I guess =)

After some desperate sifting through my folders I have managed to collect the below.

#1-6 is artwork for A Landlord's Dream. Most was made with the expanded version of the game in mind with the exception of #6 which was made for the MAGS version but we ran out of time so it was never used.
#7-8 was made when I was considering joining a MAGS themed "Monsters".
#9 is a world map for one of my forever-in-limbo projects, The Snow Queen.
#10-11 is another one of those, based on one of HPL's short stories.
#12 is a mockup of a game I thought would be fun to play on mobile devices. I didn't draw the astronaut, I just copy pasted him in to test the GUI design.
#13-14 is another set of mockups inspired by a MAGS theme, All Hallow's Eve.

Valhalla Extinction

If it was a speedcoding content, this would have been my favourite. Sound effects are pretty well picked, too. Quite an original interpretation of the theme.

Wow Mandle, just wow. I wish I had 1/10 of your coding skills... As others pointed out it is more of a skeleton for a simulation than an actual game, but an impressive skeleton nonetheless! And it *is* strangely addictive to watch.

It was a very enjoyable (if a little sadistic *cough*) experience. Rarely you can see a MAGS game that does not cry for a post-MAGS revision, but this is one of the honourable exceptions. Great job WHAM, very impressive how you managed to release not just simply a good game, but a fully finished, polished product all by yourself. The graphics are slightly repetitive perhaps and could possibly use a minor detailing here or there, but very clean and consistent nevertheless, and the animations are smooth and sweet. Also, grue! :-D
My definite favourite this month.

The Awakening
Spoiler
I have worked on this entry so not much for me to comment on, but I'd like to thank Luis for the opportunity to work on the game with him. Even though I fully agree with the comments that the game still requires a lot of work before it is anything close to a finished product (the half-finished backgrounds and clumsy animations, duh), it has been a good experience and a pleasure to work with you.

QuoteAlso the red panel seems to be bugged.
The panel is not exactly bugged, just difficult to operate because the hotspot is very small, and moving the cursor outside of the hotspot area makes it revert to the default walk icon (or whatever other cursor was active before). The way you handle it is just hover the cursor over the corresponding panel without trying to choose an action (i.e. don't right click). Left click the panels when the cursor turns to an arrow.
Agree this should be addressed, thanks for pointing this out.

Dave made me do it.

[Excuses, excuses!]

Congrats on releases everyone!

@Dave, I don't know who that talented artist you mentioned before was but thanks for letting me join in instead :)

M.OUXX, this is very, very impressive. I've always been a little envious of the artists who can pull off a panorama perspective just like that.
And for me the picture perfectly fits the "make something interesting happen in an adventuregame background that has a phonebooth in it" and "it is blended into the scenery" bits so can't see why it wouldn't qualify as an entry =)

selmiak, thanks for the crits!
I've tried to see if I can apply your suggestion, see my first post if you like.

Just noticed I have messed up the colours in the upper part of the street lamp. Meh.

Old version:

New version:

Edit: wanted to add a new version but thought better of it. This time I've managed to mess up the shading on the phone booth itself.
Edit2: This should be a little bit better.
#677
So would Carrie... escape the prom! :-D
#678
Yeah absolutely, honestly as an almost complete scripting illiterate I'm quite impressed that you have managed to pull off this kind of a custom interface within such a short time frame all by yourself.

As for the Japanese granny, you're a foreigner which means you do all kinds of outlandish things per se! She was probably hardly suprised =)

This game is doing whatever in its power to best me, but I shall not be bested!
I will retry today evening.

An interesting concept Mandle, the controls do feel a bit awkward to me and it's somewhat difficult to figure out how to progress even with your interface hints, but I've got hooked anyway.

The atmosphere totally makes up for the difficulty of navigating the game, and the voice acting is AWESOME. The way the main character speaks freaked me out more than the occasional jump scares, great job there :)
#680
Love the art and the atmosphere, xil.
As a long time horror fan I'm not easily impressed by jump scares, but I must say the game over screen is awesome :)

The actual gameplay can indeed get random at times, just like a few others I managed to accidentally teleport to the next room without solving the puzzle:

Spoiler
I interacted with most of the hotspots in the first room, then grabbed the remote and without thinking, I input a random number (12) which ported me to the room with the tree. Then again, in the beginning this kind of worked in favour of the game atmosphere, too â€" I explored the tree room then, relaxed, I casually pressed another random number on the remote and BOO, I'M DEAD!! That was pretty awesome =)

I have yet to play though to the end now that I have realised how to properly progress, but quite an enjoyable game so far.
