Hi dudes,

To anyone who I used to hang out with here (quite awhile ago), I was wondering if by any chance, you might happen to have stored away somewhere some old copy of the demo of a game-in-production-that-I-never-finished called "Gift of Aldora"? A few years back I had a HD die with no backups, and I have no copies of it myself.

I guess it might be called gift.exe or gift.zip or giftofalsora.exe ... I cannot remember, I'm afraid.

I suddenly remembered it and thought it'd be great to find a copy if there's one still floating around somewhere. If so, please shoot me an email at kinoko AT kinokofry.com

Thanks! It's a long shot but worth a try.

Hey guys, if anyone remembers the old, old AGS game, Cirque de Zale, my best pal Patrick Alexander and myself recorded a longplay/Let's Play of us playing it. Patrick plays so I can talk about making the game and this and that, so if you're into such things:

Cirque de Zale Longplay

Thought you might be interested! We made it as entertaining as possible at 3am in the morning. :)

I recently put out a call on my website but I figured I'd post it here too. I have someone trying to recover all the data/comics/artwork lost on a broken HDD and it's, of course, the worst problem you can have. He needs a specific drive. A VERY specific drive.

I thought I'd post it here too in the hopes of widening the scope of my search. If any of you have a techy kinds of friends and think they might be able to help/be interested in a new HDD, I'd appreciate it! Though I realise it's an odd thing to ask :) I have no expectations, but I'm trying everything I can as this is probably the last thing I can do.

Craig:

From the sticker on the top of the drive: Samsung HD501LJ/JP1 Rev. A; SEC-HD501LJ(B); 2007.9; P/N: 40141XXXXXXXXX T166S.

If someone has a drive matching those numbers, we may be able to use it! Send an email to info@dataretriever.com.au with 60413 Donor Drive in the subject and either a clear photo of the drive label or a complete listing of all info from the drive’s sticker. If your drive does indeed match and we can use it (it needs to be 100% healthy â€" we can confirm this after receiving it), we’ll swap you a brand new 1TB internal hard drive â€" free upgrade for your trouble! All you have to do is post it in and then once we confirm it is suitable, we’ll mail you your new, bigger hard drive. Thanks for your help.

I'm also offering a set of prints and a free copy of the KinokoFry book I'll be able to make if this data gets recovered.

If anyone can help, I appreciate it!

I'd love for some of you to get involved with my recent comic project:

BEC

The basic idea is that I will draw comics of other people's great ideas about how to make the world better. And this is something -everyone- has. How we can live more sustainably, something great you've learnt that you think other people could benefit from knowing, a great approach to life you've come to realise, etc.

The response to this has been amazingly positive, and I've already received so many amazing ideas. Those of you who know TED will see my inspiration. My intention is for this to be a fun and accessable way for us all to share ideas with each other. :)

I know this is a smart forum and I reckon a lot of you have a lot of great insights to offer.

And if you don't have an idea ready to burst out of you, there's really great discussion of ideas on the Shruggenbee forums. I like this a lot because it gives these ideas a chance to get fleshed out.

Anyway - I hope this is a thing you might be interested in!

If you do have an idea to submit, please email it to me or start a thread on the forums, cause that's where I look when I'm looking to write the next comic.

Thanks!

Hey guys :)

Someone recently let me know Cirque de Zale was being sold on some Australian auction site.

http://www.oztion.com.au/vshops/item.aspx?itemid=8264931id=

How ridiculous. Honestly.

I can only assume they are some kid, but at the same time, they've got a LOT of other things for sale and seem to have a history on the site. The fuck? I really can't make sense of it and Oztion (jesus, what a stupid name) is not making it easy for me to get it taken down.

Right now I'm writing to the seller, but if they don't do anything, I'm going to have to sign something or other and physically send it in. What a ludicrous pain in the arse! Just so I can stop some idiot from charging money for an old, shitty game which is freely available over the web.

Anyway - they seem to be selling a great number of games. I see Yahtzee's stuff among others. Might be something some of you should look into as well.

This is small fry but it really bugs me. This is just the wrong attitude and I hate being made to go to all this effort just to stop something so ridiculous. As if anyone would buy this stuff. Would they?? People are clearly surprising me.

General Discussion / Hello to old friends!
Fri 26/06/2009 18:03:25
Hey guys!

I was just passing by :) Seriously, I had to go to the tech forum for something and I thought, "Heck. What's going on in my old hangout?"

Is there anyone still around these days that I know/knew me? If not, uh, guess this is kinda awkward. Go back to your business I guess.

Hey guys! I did indeed google this, but the results were just confusing and vague so I'd prefer to hear your opinion.

In a month or so, I'll be staying in a guest house with a friend, and we both have laptops and need internet access simultaneously. This place only has, apparently, one LAN cable from which to suck the webby goodness.

My question is what we can do to both have internet access given this situation. I've heard talk of a "cross over" cable but that seems to be for only file transfers, not shared internet access.

I'm ultimately looking for something cheap and simple, because this situation will only exist for 2~3 months.

Thanks! You guys are so smart :D Love ya.

Just in case anyone here doesn't read the IndieGames weblog:

The Sense of Wonder Night at TGS

There are a lot of very interesting games here and concepts here. It's very well-worth your time to give these titles a look.

If nothing else, I highly recommend Moon Stories. Gosh, it's lovely, and so, so simple.

General Discussion / Game editors
Wed 17/09/2008 07:22:54
For those of you who use, or have used, other game editors, I'm curious about what they are and how many you know? Also, how many different programming languages (or even just normal scripting languages) are you somewhat proficient in?

Right now, I am having a stab at learning Flash (though I've JUST started), I'm also using Inform 7 (what a comparitive breeze!), I'm hoping to get stuck into GameMaker, I'm curious about Multimedia Fusion, and I've just decided to take a look at the new AGS editor and see what that can do for me.

GOD. But this is all to the end really of finding which editor is best going to suit my needs and which I can get a feel for.

So, how about you, then?

MY shirt design on Threadless!

It's my very first one - and it was accepted!

It's been submitted for a "Threadless Loves Drawing" competition and there are a LOT of entries, so I'm not sure what to expect from it. But I hope a lot of people at least get to see it.

Do take a look!

If you like it, if you could see your way to voting, I'd really appreciate it.

Who else is excited about Captain Rainbow?

Anyone? Just me? That's crazy.

It's a new game by the always-amazing company Skip. Perhaps you were lucky enough to play Giftpia, or Chibi Robo, or the bit Generations games, or LOL. Skip are an incredibly creative game company and if you've had the pleasure of playing one of their games, you'll probably be on your way to discovering why news of Captain Rainbow tickles me gently in all my favourite places.

You can learn more about it here, if you try.

I actually haven't found myself so excited about a game all year. And who even knows when I'll get to play it, seeing as it's currently only a Japanese release. REGARDLESS, my veins still course with anticipation. My soul is still just a little brighter for this game existing. I find myself excited just about being excited about this game. It's refreshing.

Do regale me (and indeed, us) with tales of what games in recent times (perhaps so recent that they are current times) have similarly given you a figurative (or literal) stiffy.

General Discussion / Making games with Flash
Mon 25/08/2008 04:51:03
I actually have a little game I'd like to develop using Flash. But I've never used it before!

Can anyone here recommend a good place to learn how to program with Flash? Any tips?

General Discussion / What is this song?
Thu 17/07/2008 15:16:47
It's another one of those threads!

A few months ago when I was still in Japan, I was in some shop and a really good song came on. It was in English, a male singer, mostly guitar-ey. The lyrics in the chorus went something like, "Love is never as good as you think it's gonna be". Perhaps not exactly, but more or less that.

I'm afraid I don't have much else to go by. I've tried googling various things but I can't find a trace of this song, and noone seems to have heard of it.

Any ideas?

General Discussion / CD burning freeware

Can anyone recommend some good free CD/DVD burning software?

Sorry, I know this is all I ask these days. I can't help it - you guys are so GOOD at this.

I'm just looking to play around a little with some video editing software. Nothing serious yet, so I'm looking for something free. Do you guys have any recommendations?

General Discussion / Laptop advice!
Sun 20/04/2008 11:48:30
I'm looking at finally getting a new laptop after 3 wonderful years of sharing and caring for each other. This one has been like a puppy to me, but with all the art I'm doing these days and with trying to speed up work on kinokofry.com, it is struggling along. I need something with more processor power that can handle large image files without grinding to a halt.

So, I'm in need of some advice! I'm completely broke for the time being so I won't be buying anything right now but I want to have an idea of what I'm looking for and what people have had good experiences with.

My current baby is a Compaq Intel Celeron M (??), 1.30GHz, 224MB of RAM. I barely know what that means.

I want something simple, and the more compact, the better, but about the same size would be nice. One feature I like about this is that it has a card reader on the side which works with my phone's memory card nicely, but I could live without it I suppose. I also need at least 3 USB ports.

Seriously, that's all I need! I have simple needs, but I DO need a decent amount of processor power so that I can work on very very large images with ease as well as having things like email and iTunes going.

So I suppose, do you guys recommend a certain company over others? What's the best -way- to buy? Should I get one online? I need it to be as cheap as possible because I have no job and every cent counts ^_^

Thanks guys!

P.S. Oh, of course I need built in wireless but I'm assuming everything comes with that these days.

Do you guys know about this?

The 1st Annual Game Making Shindig

I figured some of you might be interested!

I'm trying to remember the name of a hip hop (?) artist I saw about 4 or 5 years ago.

He's a BIG fat black dude, and he sings like he's fucking yelling and belting it out the whole time. The -whole- time. It's awesome. I saw one or two songs of his before I moved to Japan so I have no idea if this guy is still going and known by people or what.

I wanna say he had a name like, "Fat Jim". Obviously, not that. But you know. A descriptive name.

The only other thing I can think is that the first song of his I saw, the clip had him after some chick, and they had bobble heads.

Surely one of you knows this, help a brother out!

Appreciated ^_^

General Discussion / KinokoFry! - A webcomic
Mon 14/01/2008 13:39:11
Some of you know about this wonderous hidden treasure of the internet already but for those who don't, please don't spend another minute waiting and wondering what your life's purpose is!

The answer is here!

It's my new webcomic! I think some of you will like this, so please give it a look. A big thanks to the people that helped me out with learning the PHP and whatnot.

Don't forget to tell your friends and many, many lovers, you sexy people. If anyone else has a webcomic, notice I'm with Project Wonderful so do feel free to advertise your site on mine at, currently, no cost whatsoever.

Cheers!

I've recently started creating my own webcomic. I've spent all weekend on it, staying up til 5:30am learning PHP, fighting hoardes of monsters with only a toothpick and having to overcome emotional hurdles such as a crippling fear of buttons.

I am dedicated to this, and I've been working hard for it.

One of the things I'm dedicated to is getting word out to all my future fans, and I'm doing that at the moment with Project Wonderful - a site that allows webcomic atists to all share advertising space.

It's pretty ... well, wonderful. I like it.

Basically, you hook it up to your paypal account (which I have) or credit card (which I don't have) and you can bid tiny amounts of money or large amounts of money on advertising space on certain pages. You can also make money by providing advertising space.

My problem.

My paypal account is hooked up to my Australian bank account. I live in Japan. There is no money in my Australian bank account nor do I have internet banking enabled. I am a forward thinking person.

I have in the past tried to make a new paypal account connected to my Japanese bank account, twice I believe. I can't remember why but it was impossible.

Basically I have no way of getting money into my paypal account of my own volition.

Why this doesn't matter to you!

Because I'm not going to ask anyone to take pity on me, it doesn't matter! My problem is of zero concern to you.

Why you're even reading this?!

Because I would like somebody to commision me for some art that I can draw for you and send to you.

(side note) I'm actually a really good artist!

I would like some interested person to basically agree to throw some cash into my paypal account, in exchange for which I'll draw you a picture that I feel is worth about that amount.

I'm not asking for hundreds of dollars here - but don't let that stop you from GIVING me hundreds of dollars! If you do so, you'll get a fine commisioned piece that'll take genuine time and effort. But it will take time.

Even if it's $10 (which, to be honest, is better for me time-wise), I'll send you a little something that, while not being a fully coloured A3 piece of amazing, will still be neat and full of love. I actually do quite neat postcard pictures, and I can do them on normal postcard card or on this very lovely neopiko board which is thick and
fabulous.

That's my offer, I hope noone has a problem with me asking. I just really want to make this work, and I want to work for it!

My existing art for your perusal.

You can check out my DeviantArt page or my Livejournal page.

Of course, yours will be a completely unique piece all for yourself.

EDIT: I actually have a couple of commissions now so there's no great urgency. I'm still happy to take anymore if you so desire!
