General Discussion / No need to thank me...
Wed 22/06/2005 13:57:22
I submit to you that this is the coolest thing ever. Ever. Not even evolution is this cool.

This is my house (somewhere in here!):

Go NUTS with this thing people. I'm finding Mt. Fuji at the moment.

General Discussion / Se7en (spoilers)
Sun 19/06/2005 15:25:06
I've just rewatched Se7en for the first time in quite a few years, so, as you do, I'm noticing a few more things about it. For those of you who have seen it, am I wrong in thinking that all the murders made sense except for "sloth", in the sense that all the other victims embodied the sin they were accused of (ie. fat guy was "gluttony", rich guy was "greed", prostitute was "lust", etc...)? Also, when John turns himself in at the policestation, he says, "I know you". I read on a discussion on imdb two theories concerning this. One, that he's alluding to understanding the detective, two, that he's simply being a little cocky and alluding to when they "met" outside of his apartment. To be honest, I don't think either one really fits, it really seems like an odd line to me.

But I'm interested in what others think ^_^

EDIT: As an extra note, I find this movie very hard to watch after the first sitting, because I keep looking at Brad Pitt's character knowing what's in store for him.

I've noticed when I put the character [ in my global messages, I get a line break in game instead of the character showing up. ], on the other hand, shows up fine. Is that er... normal?

General Discussion / ASCII table help
Tue 07/06/2005 04:51:32
Using an ASCII table (such as http://www.lookuptables.com/), how can I tell what to write in an AGS script to make use of characters 16-31? Or... can I?

Well, for all you people with dribs and drabs of a game that may or may not be finished someday, and all you people on the edge of completing something but lacking the motivation to do so, let me acomodate you.

This isn't a competition as such, just a big free-for-all where we can all showcase our talents. Basically, a date is set for "Release Something!" Day (I guess, I just invented it) and on that day, people are invited to post to this thread anything they like, really. For example, some sprites,Ã,  screenshots of your game, music, sound effects, backgrounds, rooms, a plugin, a storyboard, a demo, or if you can manage it, a full game. Heck, even if it's 95% done or 1% done, if you wanna release it, you go for it!

I've decided to set the date for 3 weeks. 2 seemed too short for some to get their 'stuff' done, 4 seemed too long to wait. So, let's say the 25th of June. Seems like a nice round date.

Remember, anything you want, as little or as much of it as you want! Get working, people!

The Time has come! Release whatever you had done, NOW!

General Discussion / Release Something!
Mon 06/06/2005 03:11:19
I'm actually stealing this idea from the game maker forums. I thought it was a pretty crappy idea there, but I reckon it could be cool here (I guess because I have a lot more respect for what people are producing here).

Basically, the idea is "Release Something". A date is set, and on that date everyone (well, anyone who's interested) posts -something- related to their game. It could be some sprites, some screenshots, a demo, a little one-roomer game, some music... anything you want.  This could even inspire you to finish your full game by the date.

It doesn't matter if what you release isn't complete, or if you don't think it's good, you just release something. I think this could be a great way to motivate us to finish something, to get started on something or to play around with an idea. It's also fun to get a look at what other people are producing, and that alone may motivate us.

Would anyone be interested in this? Any thoughts?

General Discussion / Long term contraception
Wed 01/06/2005 14:33:26
I guess this is really for the older posters out there.

Basically, I'm going to Japan soon and I'm starting to get the impression that depo provera isn't an option over there. they only legalised the pill in 2000 (I mean, freaking JESUS!). I've been on depo since I was 17 (I'm now 22) and it's been pretty wonderful for me. I have no side effects (at least that I can tell are as a result of using the depo) apart from not having had a period since I was 17 - which is BLISS! Of course, I always knew this wasn't going to be something I could keep up forever. Pumping hormones into my body just isn't what I want to do for too long (though I feel it's quite safe for the time I've used it so far). So, seeing as it might be a no-go in Japan anyway (and I'll be there for at least a year), I'm considering that now is the time to stop.

It won't be a huge issue while I'm in Japan, because my boyfriend will only be visiting occasionally, so we can take temporary measures on those occasions. I don't fancy the idea of taking the pill either, because it's really just the same as what I have now, only more expensive and much more of a pain in the arse (no pun intended, for those who know how depo is administered).

So... I'm left wondering what might be an option in the future. Of course, I have a long time to think about this, and I know most of the options available. I -really- don't fancy just using condoms for the rest of my life (temporarily sure, but...). The topic of a vasectomy for my partner has come up, but as I was quite happy on the depo, never really discussed in much detail.

I guess I'm interested in what those of you in marriages or really long term relationships do, or plan to do.

P.S. Neither of us want children, and please don't debate the issue with me because I've heard it all before. Not to say you will, but I'm just... letting you know that that's where it is with us ^_^ Permanent solutions aren't a problem in that regard.

P.P.S. I'm posting this here because this is the most mature forum I know. I value your opinions and I know a lot of you are married/in like relationships.

General Discussion / Origin 1 decided!

QUEENSLANDER!!!

I was actually at the game tonight (and will be at the third one too) and I have to say it was one of the most nail-biting, exciting games I've ever had the privilage to see. My boyfriend has practically no voice left, I have a throat that seems to be contorting (but voice not too bad), but hell, losing a leg would have been worth it.

Thank god it ended with a try! I usually hate golden point because I find finishing a game with a field goal so anti-climatic, but this was one of the most dramatic, amazing ends to a game ever. I feel sure we're gonna be seeing that intercept by Bowen on footage reels for a long time.

By the way, to people who don't know what I'm on about... you're probably not Australian ^_^ Don't worry.

There's a website for a game I'm interested in (Summon Night), which has a lovely movie on it now. Usually I can save this sort of stuff, but because of the way this is embedded, I'm not sure how/if I can save it. I can't see the filename in the source code, and I'm not even sure if it's a swf file or what.

http://www.summonnight.net/snworld/snex/index.html

Does anyone have any idea how I can get this saved? I've looked in Firefox cache but can't see any trace of it.

(I recommend people with dial up don't even look at this webpage, even the menu needs to "load").

If not, the game's worth looking at anyway ^_^ Very pretty, and the music's gorgeous.

By the way, the movie isn't that stuff you see first. That's just an elaborate menu introduction. You can skip it, and click on "movie" on the right-hand side.

I'm thinking of doing a Japanese translation for my game once it's done. I've had a bit of a think about it, and I think I can make it work. Only using one Japanese script, I'll have enough characters in a font to make it work. Because of the nature of Japanese writing, (ka, ki, ku, ke, ko, etc), I was thinking of writing the script in romanised Japanese (english letters), then doing a replace on each individual set of letters (ie. "ka" becomes "b", or whatever the equivalent turns out to be) to make the script work with er... whichever 'place' the letter is in the font. (I hope people can understand me here -_-)

I've never dabbled in a translation before, so I don't REALLY know what I'm doing yet, but does anyone see any real problems with this?

I'm bringing this question here only because I know you people are SANE and because I know a lot of you also play RPGs and whatnot.

There's an independant RPG that seems to be regarded as one of the best out there called Ara Fell. I downloaded this and upon attempting to play it, realised you need to have the program it was made with (RPG Maker 2003) to play it. Okay, whatever, it's a pain in the ass but what the hey. So I have RM2k3 installed, try to play the game, it still doesn't work.

I'm told by people that I have the wrong RTP file, I'm told by others I need to rename some files here and there, I'm told by others I need to rename so many files it's not worth it and I should get a whole new folder by someone/thing called RPG Advocate... does anyone here have any clue as to what's going on? I HATE this program. I HATE it with a passion I cannot describe. Why do people make games with such a stupid freaking program and why do people play them when there's SO much ****ing around you have to do beforehand.

Is it just me?? This is driving me insane. I feel like when I release my game in the one exe file people won't know what to do with it because it'll be too simple for them.

EDIT: Nope, nope, forget it. I've had my fill of this piece of crap program. I just delted all the RPG Maker games I had and the stupid, stupid RTP files and I'm never, EVER trying to use it again. It just baffles me that anyone would want to use a program like that.

I guess as testament to how crap that program is, you just need to look at the games people make with it and the culture that surrounds it. I swear, if I ever met anyone who made a game with all their own graphics and sounds and programming, I'd turn into a penguin. That whole RPGM culture is stupid, all praising each other for making a pretty looking demo made up of ripped graphics and pre-made chipsets. 75% of the games are Pokemon or Final Fantasy rip offs. ARGH!!!

Is it that they're lazy or it just doesn't occur to them to actually make their own game with their own material? I don't know... I've had it. I've reached the end of my patience.

I LOVE AGS like a thousand and one kittens made out of chocolate flavoured gold. Don't stray people, because it's a scary, crappy, unprofessional world out there.

I'm sure this is obvious to everyone but me, but id it possible to have an area with multiple walkways on different levels, ie, The character can walk on the same x/y coords but be on a different pathway depending on where he comes from. Really, I've no doubt it IS possible but I'm not sure how to do it since I've never needed this feature before.

This is great fun: http://www.isketch.net/ ^_^

The only probaly is that I can't play in the same room as my boyfriend (who's using another computer)... but I can see the reasoning there.

Zoo Keeper - http://www.ebaumsworld.com/zookeeper.html (It's available practically everywhere though)

I just feel that this game is worth a special little thread of it's own. I've been playing it all day and I'm only getting more and more addicted. It's probably been on the net for thousands of years and everyone knows about it but me, but for those who don't, take a look at it, it's great fun!

I've made it up to stage 8 with 17620 so far. Not too great, but I just end up falling it a heap everytime I get to that level.

I'm fairly sure there's a GB version of this game, I've sure I've seen it in stores and though, "Hmm, looks cute".

I have a cat, getting on 6 months old now, and she's a bit of a furniture scratcher. Furniture, carpet... anything, really. I've done some reading up and I realise now she needs more than one scratching post (which she doesn't use anyway, but it was an el cheapo one... it's pretty crappy). I think I know what I want, but I wondered what any of the cat owners here have found that works, because I always prefer word of "mouth" to reading a website and wondering if it's being sponsered to give good "advice" on a particular product.

One of the things I like the look of is this: http://about.pricegrabber.com/search_getprod.php/masterid=2541644/search=Cosmic%2520Alpine%2520Scratcher

I'd also like to get just a plain sisal scratching post as well (but one that's big and study enough for kitty to really get into).

So, what do you guys use?

Oh, I'd also like to give her a treat every time she uses the post at the start, what's a good treat? My cat loves tuna but I don't really fancy running to the fridge and trying to pick out a chunk of tuna for her when the time comes.

I have to get some passport photos done but instead of spending whatever ridiculous amount to get them taken at a photo place, I want to do what a friend did and take them myself, make a template with the photos spreadout and print them out at one of those computer things they have for you to print your own photos out. (I'm so up on the technical words). It's a much cheaper option and I can take as many photos myself and pick the one I want.

I've asked my friend the measurements he used, and he told me a 300dpi page, 1800x1200 pixels (6x4"), 4 photos by 2 on the page, with individual photos being 3x4cm portrait.

The only thing that doesn't fit is the 3x4cm portrait, so I just divided 1800 by 4 and 1200 by 2 to get that size.

It works now, but I just wanted to ask if this seems right, and if anyone has done this sort of thing before.

General Discussion / I'm a-going to Japan!
Fri 15/04/2005 16:13:46
Wheeeeeeee! I got the word a couple of days ago (but have been without a computer all week). I've been accepted into the JET program and will be leaving for Japan at the end of July this year. Waiting that that envelope in the mail was one of the most stressful times of my life. I'm not really as happy as I should be, because it means an awful lot of hardships for me (the biggest of which being living without my significant other for a year, when we haven't been apart for more than a day in over 4 years). Still, I'm happy and relieved, and maybe I'll be posted in Okinawa with Vince! ^_-

I have a trigger in a room that sets off a function, and at the end of that function, a timer is set:

Code: ags

if (IsTimerExpired(5)) {
  if (cue==1) TypeLineInvis("The great and powerful woman who created the lands, the oceans, the skies...", 20, 160, 2, 10, 200);
  else if (cue==2) {
    NewRoom(31);
    cue=0;
}

What should happen, is that initially, cue=0, then the function is run from the room which results in cue=1 and the timer starting. So, after that's expired, a second function is run which changes cue to 2, and... what I'd like to happen, is for NewRoom to work here.

It doesn't, because it tells me that this function can't be run from repeatedly_execute_always. I understand the need for this, but I have the code set up that it will only be called once, so there's no danger of it repeating. I tried putting NewRoom(31) into a seperate function and running that from repeatedly_execute_always but that still counts as running NewRoom from there.

Can I get around this?
#139
Is there any way I can make this code non-blocking? The Wait's are the problem but I'm not sure if/how I could use timers to get past this.

Code: ags

function TypeLineInvis (string say, int xpos, int vpos, int width, int delay, int wait) {
if (IsGamePaused()==0) {
	StrCopy (line, say);

	StopMoving(EGO);
	SetTextWindowGUI(31);
	  int textid=0;
	  int length=0;
	  int i=0;
	  StrCopy(displayedline,"");
	  textid = CreateTextOverlay(xpos, 100, 400, 1, 1, displayedline);

		  //get string length, to know how long the loop must run
	  length=StrLen(line); //set string length
		 //start loop
	while((i<length) && (1||(Wait(delay)==0))) {
		 // pick character at position "i"and stick it at the end of string "displayed line"
	    StrFormat(displayedline, "%s%c", displayedline, StrGetCharAt(line,i));
		 //set textoverlay as displayedline
	    SetTextOverlay(textid,xpos,vpos,width,1,1,displayedline);

		 // if a space is added to the string do not play a sound, else play a 'tick'
	    if (StrGetCharAt(line,i) == ' '){
	   }
	   else{
		PlaySound(1);
	    }
		   //increase the loop counter
	    i++;
	   if (i==length) if (wait>0) Wait(wait);
	   }
	 RemoveOverlay(textid);
	 Wait(5);
}
}

I've been trying to think of my new game's intro sequence for over a week now. I had one planned, but it never sat right with me and I want something that will really click. It's been frustrating the heck out of me, and just about every chance I get, I turn my mind to this matter. I'm thinking of just pouring a nice bath, shutting my eyes and thinking for a long time. Hopefully, a good idea will come before I drown.

The intro for Cirque took no thought whatsoever, I knew immediately what I wanted to do so this is really frustrating for me. So, I was wondering if other people go through this, and what they do to get ideas. Meditation? Watching movies? Playing games? Going on a mentally refreshing hike up a mountain?
