Time for another one perhaps!

ABOUT RELEASE SOMETHING:
This isn't a competition as such, just a big free-for-all where we can all showcase our talents. Basically, a date is set for "Release Something!" Day and on that day, people are invited to post to this thread anything they like, really. For example, some sprites,Ã,  screenshots of your game, music, sound effects, backgrounds, rooms, a plugin, a storyboard, a demo, or if you can manage it, a full game. Heck, even if it's 95% done or 1% done, if you wanna release it, you go for it!

WHEN:
It's starting on November 25th (that is, NOW) and usually runs for a couple of days to accomodate for different timezones and people actually having lives.

Remember, anything you want, as little or as much of it as you want! Get working, people!

This is the only piece of code in this game so far, so there really can't be aything conflicting. Whatever the problem is, it's here.

Basically, I have a room with one GUI in the top-left hand corner. The room background is 2040x2550 and the "map" GUI is 68x85. The map is a smaller version of the background and what I'd like is if you click on any given area of the GUI, the view scrolls to the corresponding area in the room.

This is the code I have so far:

Code: ags

		int ypos = 0;
		int xpos = 0;
		destx = ((mouse.x-gMap.X)*30)-640; //Establish the destination by converting
		desty = ((mouse.y-gMap.Y)*30)-480; //small map coords to large room coords
		if (destx<0) destx=0; //if destination is within 640x480, make
		if (desty<0) desty=0; //sure the dest coords don't go below 0

		int diffx = 0;
		int diffy = 0;
		if (GetViewportX()<destx) diffx = destx-GetViewportX(); //Establish the distance between
    else if (GetViewportX()>destx) diffx = GetViewportX()-destx; //current X,Y coords
		if (GetViewportY()<desty) diffy = desty-GetViewportY(); //and the destination X,Y coords
		else if (GetViewportY()>desty) diffy = GetViewportY()-desty;

		int speedx = (diffx/10)-(diffx%10); //Set speed so larger distances are
		int speedy = (diffy/10)-(diffy%10); //covered in the same time ie. scrolls faster

	while ((ypos != desty) || (xpos != destx)) {
		SetViewport(xpos, ypos);
		Wait(1);
		if (ypos<desty) ypos+=speedy;
		else if (ypos>desty) ypos-=speedy;
		if (xpos<destx) xpos+=speedx;
		else if (xpos>destx) xpos-=speedx;
	}

Perhaps more convoluted than it needs to be, but it seems to me it should work. It half works, because when I click on areas of the map, the screen does move but often ends up going twice as far as it needs to on the Y axis, or occasionally in the wrong direction entirely.

I can't help but feel it's my maths which is wrong here, and/or the mouse recognition.

Any ideas?

Oh, I've also noticed that the mouse cursor doesn't go down to the bottom of the screen. It stops perhaps about 20 pixels short, and of course seems to go about that much higher off the top of the page. What on earth could be causing this? I've never really coded for mouse/cursor functions so I'm stumped.

Also, I have another GUI made up with almost the exact same properties as the map GUI (which shows up everytime) which I just can't get to appear on the screen. I can think of no reason whatsoever for this. Even if I code a gDebug.Visible = true; into the game start, it won't show up. And yet, the gMap GUI shows up, as it should.

Sorry to ask so much, its just baffling that I have all these problems when there's really no more to the game than what I've mentioned here.

Oh, joy of joys!

The Mushroom Republic has done it again! My dear friend and well-known comic genius Patrick Alexander has finally released his own game, "Chu-chi"!

It's a very unique music-based shooter created in Game Maker. I won't go on about it too much because you ought to see for yourselves, but it's terribly impressive, and I don't even mean in a "for his first game" kind of way. It's incredible that he's managed to put something like this together for what is indeed his first game (it puts me to shame and do intend on self mutilating myself later, rest assured).

Well, here are some screens:

To keep the project managable, it's only two levels long but trust me, you'll spend a decent amount of time playing this. I did the old, "Play it because my friend made it" thing not thinking I would be anywhere near as caught up playing it as I was. It's almost certainly going to be a bit overwhelming at first, but as you get the hang of it bit by bit, it's very rewarding and a real challenge. PLAY IT LONG TIME!!!

Right! Here's the game: http://chickennation.com/chu-chi/chu-chi_102.zip
(Just under 11MB)

...and here's Patrick's LiveJournal if you want to send him any comments, which I know for a fact he'd hate, so do it for me instead: http://community.livejournal.com/chickennation/15732.html

This is such a basic question, I almost want to shoot myself for asking, but here goes. I have a GUI in the corner of a scrollable screen, I simply want this code:

Code: ags

SetViewport(mouse.x*30,mouse.y*30);

to be used when the left mouse button is clicked on said GUI. Given my recent game project involved no mouse whatsoever, I have no idea how to do this. Which script do I write the code in? Global? The GUI's script? I'm not sure how to achieve, "if mouse click on GUI".

What's the deal, are the originals (not the VGA remakes) available for download anywhere? Or is Sierra still being a bitch about that sort of thing? Because I wanna make my friend play the original and yet it's proving mighty difficult to find it on the net.

People of AGS,

I'm in Brisbane right now cleaning out my stuff from my old apartment (now my ex-fiance's apartment), and before I head back to Japan on the 26th, I have a veritable lifetime of goods to get rid of. I can't take them with me, and I cannot afford to ship them all over to my parents' house on the other side of the country. So they need to go. Most of the books I've read, the CDs and DVDs I shall be burning a copy of for myself before I get rid of them and though I would prefer to keep the originals, I just can't. I physically and financially can't.

I've put prices on these, but this is just kinda a rough guide. I mean, I'd prefer to get a little something for them because I'm terribly broke *violins!* The only thing I really need and won't waver on is that you agree to pay for all the postage/shipping yourself.

Most of these things are in excellent condition because I do take care of my things. Some of the books aren't new though (I mean, when I got them), a bunch are 2nd or 3rd hand. I haven't written which yet because this took long enough to do already but please ask if you care. Some of these books are near new, some are old and adorable and have that nice smell old books get. Some DVDs have only been watched once, and even my most treasured ones haven't been watched more than a few times. There are only so many hours in the day for Labyrinth, as great as it is.

I hope these prices aren't too much, I was trying to pick something reasonable that would be practically nothing. Feel free to bargain, but the postage must be paid.

One thing I didn't put on there is 4 Futurama box sets, seasons 1-4, because they are kinda special and I haven't figured out what to do with them yet. I can't take them with me, but I guess if someone wants them, offer me a price and we'll see.

General Discussion / SWIV anyone?
Thu 27/07/2006 01:21:46
Hope I'm not breaking the rules with this one, but I was wondering if anyone could help me find a download of a game called SWIV. Not SWIV 3D or Super SWIV, but good old Amiga-version original SWIV. Was thinking about it yesterday but all I can find online are the remakes and whatnot.

EDIT: Well, *ahem* Since that question's been answered, let me expand the thread a bit. What's your favourite shooter? This is why SWIV was on my mind, was discussing shooter's a bit yesterday and SWIV sticks in my mind as being my personal favourite. Hard to remember why exactly, it was just plain fun. Simple but with enough to keep you interested all the way to the final boss.

Is this the 4th one? Something like that anyway. Thanks to Scummbuddy for being a constant reminder about this.

This is really bad-ass. I love it.

But it got me thinking. Who do you want to win? Before I saw that, I was thinking probably Street Fighter but now, well, Scorpion just kicks ass. I'd have to say I like it's brutality over Street Fighters more... cleaner style.

(Dead or Alive is still the best fighting game series ever, after Soul Caliber)

General Discussion / Wii
Fri 28/04/2006 09:50:56
I cannot believe I'm the first to start a thread on it. I claim this thread - Wii!

So, what do wii think of the name? I hate it, personally. Nintendo has become a joke. I had SUCH high hopes for the Revolution. I still think it'll be an amazing console. I can't wait for it. But I will never, ever like that name. It makes me feel embarrased to be a Nintendo fan.

Can someone please tell me an easy, no fuss way to take screencaps of an avi file? What I'm getting at the moment is that annoying thing where it just screencaps a blank hole. I remember there was sme method of getting around this but I can't remember what.

Sorry for the lack of detail, I'm not sure what else to say.

Thanks!

I'm thinking of a game I'd like to make (eventually), and I'm at the point where I'm starting to consider whether or not 2D would be the best platform for this game. I've never considered a 3D game before in my life, so I have no idea where to start really.

I'm not at the point where I want to actually find programs and play around with them, I'm still very much only thinking conceptually. But, I was wondering if some of the people here who DO have experience with both 2D and 3D game making could help me out with some rough questions I have.

Firstly, are there decent 3D game making engines out there? I'm looking to make something akin to an RPG.

Secondly, would cel shading be much more difficult to pull of than your standard 3D shading?

Thanks!

General Discussion / Giftpia! Giftpia!

I go on about this game sometimes. It really is about my favourite game in the world. I thought, for those of you who don't know what I'm talking about and would like to see a little bit about the game, I'd let you know about the webpage.

http://www.nintendo.co.jp/ngc/ggfj/

It's in Japanese, but very visual!

If you click "ON" on the front page, you can hear the theme song (the screen that pops up will ask you if you want the "short" or "long" version, in that order - get the long version).

If you'd like to see a bit of the game in action, click on the red movie reel-looking thing that says, "click!". Or just go to this link here:

http://www.nintendo.co.jp/ngc/ggfj/images/movie.wmv

For those of you who have never heard of it, Giftpia is a game released on Gamecube some years back. It's what you'd call an RPG, but I think it's closer to an adventure game. It's both and neither really. It was never released outside of Japan, unfortunately, and never translated. If there was a way for me to do it though, I'd translate it myself.

One of the greatest things about Giftpia is the music! It's -stunning- and never, ever leaves my everyday music rotation. An official soundtrack was never released because all the music is created by various amateur Japanese street bands. It's a real shame, but you can get most of the tracks here anyway:

http://www.revo-europe.com/news.php?nid=4185

I suggest you -do-. they're all wildy different styles of music, and all fabulous. They aren't all full tracks, unfortunately, but this is better than nothing.

Thankyou for your time ^_^

What's the most disgusting injury you've ever had? Or the worst? But I'm more interested in the most disgusting one.

I've had almost nothing my whole life. No broken bones, no measles or chicken pox. Never had any parts of my ripped off or maimed beyond use. Bo-ring.

I did have ring worm once which was quite disgusting, but not as disgusting as it sounds, really.

Anyone ever pulled their toenail off? That looks pretty gross: http://www.alexwrege.com/wp-content/no_toenail.jpg

The Rumpus Room / Post an awesome video clip
Mon 13/03/2006 08:24:48
The "rules" are simple. Post a video from a site like video.google.com or youtube.com that you think other people should see! (Probably try to avoid things that are well-known or from those "Most Watched Clip" lists).

I'm always finding great stuff in these places but I wanna see what the rest of you have to offer ^_^

This is my contribution. I think I've posted it on these forums before but if it passed you over, you should check this out:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5K_VMB8d19Y

The song is "Bohbo No. 5" by a long time, popular Japanese band called Southern All-Stars. I adore this song, and the filmclip rocks.

It's not like I'm the boss of the internet, but lets make this thread about links to places like the previously mentioned sites with instantly playing clips, not things you have to download or things that require bizarre plugins ^_^
