I remember someone posting the first Samorost game.

Well, he's the sequel! (I only pray someone hasn't posted -this- before)

General Discussion / Yay War of the Worlds!
Sun 11/12/2005 07:59:32
I'm in the middle of watching War of the Worlds, so this will be short post as I need to get back to it, but I needed to declare how impressed I am with this movie.

I was skeptical at first because I'm a big fan of the radio drama/book, and normally I hate remakes, particularly ones set in a different time that change the story around so much, but I have nothing but admiration so far for the way they've made this movie.

The story is good, they've kept the odd reference from the original but understood the movie has to be different in most ways to work they way they've chosen to do it. Lighting is great, sound is extremely impressive...

Also, I'm thoroughly impressed with Tom Cruise, who I usually am not a fan of. Best acting I've ever seen him do, to be honest. He hardly ever plays a different character to his stock standard, "Cool, hit the ladies hero" type.

EDIT: Well, it wasn't without it's flaws of course. Namelessly the shameless advertisement of the armed forced @_@ No wonder there were no Fed Ex od Coke ads in the whole thing, the army had bought up all the advertising rights!

Also, well, you have to be at least a little disappointed with the miracle, white bread, untouched-family-at-the-door ending.

Still, very much a fun movie. I say, "Yay" ^_^

Now, onto the second movie my family sent me for christmas; The Polar Express!

. . .

Actually, I might go watch some TV.

General Discussion / Games that make you sick!
Thu 08/12/2005 13:33:13
Slightly misleading topic there.

Do any games affect you strongly enough that you get a physical reaction? I could name a few that have made me cry, but nothing does as much for me as Terranigma (SNES). Just thinking and reading about that game is enough to make feel goose bumps, cry or just make my stomach weird.

I've just been reading a thread about it for the last couple of hours and I feel sick to the stomach a little just for being so emotionally charged. I can name a few books that do this to me, they just happen to hit the right note (Never Ending Story is one) but Terranigma takes the cake as far as games are concerned. The way it tells the story is just brilliant and the ending leaves you feeling sad and satisfied and happy and insane at the same time.

After a little thought, I honestly think a lot of it has to do with how much the game makes me want to just envelope myself in that world. I feel sad having to wrench my brain back to reality.

Honestly, it's a feeling like being in love. Like falling in love, rather, and still being in those beginning stages where all you want to think about is that person.

I'd be a bad person if I didn't share this.

It's, to me, a piece of true art.

Perhaps you'll love it as I.

Okay, it's kind of a dumb question but noone else can help me so I've turned to the forum where all my questions are answered.

I'm trying to view some video game ads, such as: http://gameads.gamepressure.com/tv_game_commercial.asp?ID=3267

I seem to have an embedded player, which I -think- is Media Player 7 because I right clicked and that's what it said... awhile ago. However, for some reason, I can't right click on the video anymore.

Anyway, the video is playing fine except with no sound at all. It plays fine for everyone but me. If I download the file and play it in a stand alone player, it's fine. I just can't get any sound in the embedded player.

I am using Firefox.

What should I do?

General Discussion / Help name my kitten!
Sun 06/11/2005 09:21:44
Being at somewhat of a quandry, I thought I'd enlist everyone's help here.

I've come to be the owner of an adorable little black cat here in Japan. I never named her because I was planning on finding another home for her. That, months later, hasn't happened. As I feared, we've become pretty attached and I'm gonna keep her and take her back to Australia with me.

Just lately, last few days or so, I've been thinking it's about time I gave her a name. My other cat in Australia (in my avatar) is called Marley in a tribute to my love for SoMI. I want my new cats name to also reflect something I'm passionate about, game-wise or music-wise, etc. I also wanted something that would be cute, rather than just calling her "Blacky" or "Noir" or some other name that has something to do with the fact that she's black.

So, help me out here. I've come up with two names that I both really like and I wanna know what you think.

ALICE - In a tribute to Alice Cooper, whom I adore. It's also a very girly, cute name.

MALON - In a tribute to my favourite character from the Zelda series (also called Marin) and also by sheer coincidence my absolute favourite flavour of anything in Japan (Malon/maron is "Spanish chestnut")

I could go for a cute name like Scribbles or Custard but for me, a name needs to reflect one of my hobbies/passions.

EDIT: For anyone who recognises the cat doll, no, I'm not calling her Jiji. For one, Jiji is a male cat, but mostly because EVERYONE in Japan wants me to call her Jiji and it;s way too cliched.

Okay, I'm so sorry to start a topic about this but I have nowhere else to ask. I'm downloading some torrents with ABC (strictly for back-up purposes ^_-) and left the laptop on to continue downloading while I went to lunch for an hour. ABC was minimised into the system tray.

Now, everything is working fine, except  I can't bring ABC back up. It's still working, still downloading, but double clicking on the icon does nothing. I tried opening the program again (in this programs case, that would usually result in the currently open copy just appearing on the screen) and nothing again.

Is there some other way I can maximise this program? I can't right click on the icon either. I really, really don't wanna have to shut the lappy down without stopping the downloads properly.

I -just- remembered this one and I've been meaning to post it for awhile.

Occasionally I'll want to use the debugging feature that shows the current script processes (can't remember the name right now), but this became obsolete for me ever since I implimented a `clock` feature in my game. Because this timer counts every second in repeately_execute_always, that and a few other scripts keep the text in the debugging feature constantly scrolling and I'm unable to read it.

I'm not sure what the solution would be, but perhaps to enable a feature that allows you decide whether repeatedly_execute_always functions are displayed...

I'm really not sure, but anyway, I thought I'd mention it.

Would it be possible to get an increase in the number of walk behinds for each room? In some of my bigger rooms, this is really hard to work around.
#90
I'm trying to create a sound file of footsteps walking on grass/ground and I recorded this, and it's pretty damn perfect for what I want. The only problem is that I can't get rid of that "hum" in the background. I tried playing with the equalizer and stuff in Gold Wave but I really have NO idea how to manipulate sounds... does anyone know if/how I can get rid of it, so the atual "footsteps" are the -only- sound?

What, in your honest opinion, is the best use of a "real" song (you know what I mean. Not game music, an actual music track you'd find on some band's album) in a game? There are more and more examples of this sort of thing these days.

For me, its Nine Lives by Aerosmith in the Xbox game, Dead or Alive 2. That song is amazing and it's absolutely kick ass going along with such a kick ass game. I usually hate real music used in games because it seems lazy, and like it's just trying to get more doofuses to play the game by mentioning that Rob Zombie features in it.

I might also mention ALL the music in Giftpia, which comes from street bands in Tokyo, but noone's ever heard of the game so it wouldn't matter. Plus, that music -sounds- gamey.

Nine Lives though. Man. Aerosmith is perfect for that game.

(Yes, I'm well aware of how many threads I start lately. I can't help that I'm so good at making interesting conversation starters)

Started using the Parallax plugin for the first time today. I think I have it set up fine, I have a normal scrolling room with 2 parallax "background" sprites drawn on top. The only problem is that as I move my character around on the room, the 2 sprites follow him exactly, ie. Don't move at all. I've tried changing the speed and the position of the sprites and it makes no difference. I have -no- idea what's not working...

For reference, I have this code in the room's "before player enters screen" script:

Code: ags

pxDrawSprite(0, 1, 1, 580, -100);
pxDrawSprite(1, 1, 1, 579, -50);

This is rather obscure, I know, but I figure it's worth a shot. I've been searching high and low but I can't find an mp3 or something of the Skies of Arcadia theme. A friend and I are looking to get ahold of it to do some mixing. The frustrating thing is that I -have- the game. I own it, its sitting on a bookshelf back in my house in Australia and if I wanted, I could go out and buy another copy here in Japan, but as far as I can tell from searching the net, there's no actual soundtrack/CD I can buy.

I've looked all over the net and can't find anything so I'm asking to see if there's any chance someone here has it or knows where I could find it.

If you haven't heard it, it's a -gorgeous- piece of slow orchestral music. Beautiful.

I normally don't come here because I like to do the best I can on my own but in this case, I -need- some help!

I have a very simple mock-up of what I'm after here, but I don't know how to execute it. This is basically gonna be a kind of tube-like "tower" suspended in an endless space, with a triangular "entrance" that, instead of being cut into the "tube", appears to be floating over it. It's supposed to look weird, simply put, and not quite right, like an Escher drawing but on a milder scale.

Three main things I'm having trouble getting right.

1) The tube descending into the darkness. I can't figure out how to give it that look of disappearing towards the bottom.

2) The entrance... I made it a straight line trangle rather than wrapping it around the tube for the effect I was after but I'm not sure if it works.

3) The lighting inside the triangle entrance. It's supposed to be like a 3D triangle space inside there, if you get me. Just room enough to enter and... sit, you know. I'm not sure what should be light and what should be dark or how to properly convey this.

Keep in mind this is for my RPG which has standard sort of SNES-ish, cel-shaded-ish colouring so no airbrushing.

Check out this pic for a look at a screenshot of a room that this will be very similar to, style-wise:

I appreciate any help!! Thanks

General Discussion / GamEnd
Sat 08/10/2005 16:04:13
I just came across this website when doing my 6-monthly (roughy) google for Cirque de Zale stuff: http://emulazione.multiplayer.it/mamend/gamend/pc/zale_1.htm

At first I thought it was a few screenshots. Then I thought they were explaining one joke. Then I realised they had screenshots of the entire bloody ending!

Far from wondering why someone would spoil the ending of the game, why would anyone go to such effort?

Then I realised it's a website with heaps of game endings: http://emulazione.multiplayer.it/mamend/gamend/

I'm not sure if I'm impressed or offended, but I thought some of you might find this interesting. I'm not sure what all the site is 'cause it's not in English.

Rather than dredge up one of the many threads on this topic, I'll start a new one for the sake of neatness.

Everyone here helped me with this TypeLine function that allows me to have text "type" out letter by letter. I've extremely grateful. This is only a small matter but I was wondering if anyone knows how I could modify this code so that, as the text is typing out, instead of typing a word at the end of a line then flipping it to the next line when the word becmes too big... instead of that, if somehow the word was known to be too big before it starts getting typed out and automatically starts the next line over.

Probably not possible but I thought I'd ask. I've been trying to think of how to do it by getting the text after/before a space read but... I can't figure out how it could be done.

Code: ags

function TypeLine (int message, int xpos, int vpos, int width, int delay, int wait) {
if (IsGamePaused()==0) {
	GetMessageText(message, line);

	StopMoving(EGO);
	SetTextWindowGUI(1);
	  textid = 0;
	  length = 0;
	  int i=0;
	  StrCopy(displayedline,"");
	  textid = CreateTextOverlay(xpos, 100, 400, 1, 1, displayedline);

		  //get string length, to know how long the loop must run
	  length=StrLen(line); //set string length
		 //start loop
	while((i<length) && (1||(WaitKey(delay)==0))) {
		 // pick character at position "i"and stick it at the end of string "displayed line"
	    StrFormat(displayedline, "%s%c", displayedline, StrGetCharAt(line,i));
		 //set textoverlay as displayedline
	    SetTextOverlay(textid,xpos,vpos,width,1,1,displayedline);

		 // if a space is added to the string do not play a sound, else play a 'tick'
	    if (StrGetCharAt(line,i) == ' '){
	   }
	   else{
		PlaySound(1);
	    }
		   //increase the loop counter
	    i++;
	   if (i==length) if (wait>0) WaitKey(wait);
	   else if (wait == -1) while (IsKeyPressed(keyx) == 0) Wait(1);
	   }
	 RemoveOverlay(textid);
	 Wait(5);
}
}

Go on. Get it out. Tell everyone your embarrasing interest. We all, I'm sure, have a band or singer we secretly like but hate telling anyone. I'll proudly proclaim everything I like because, obviously, I like it and I think it makes me freaking rock to like things like Kiss and Queen and David Bowie. I have the best god damned music taste in the world!

But I never tell anyone but my closest friends that I -really- like TLC and Brandy. I do really like both of them, and I believe they're talented and I could listen to them for hours, but for the life of me I can't bring myself to tell people they're among my favourite music artists.

So whats yours? Britany? Kenny G?
#99
Does anyone think that Nicholas Cage is a hideous actor? Every time I see him, I can't see the character he's playing, I see a guy acting. He can't play different types of people. he can't do accents, he can't display emotion, and he especially can't convincingly play a character that's clever.

So, anyone else agree?

General Discussion / AGS music video clips
Fri 30/09/2005 08:37:31
Gonna throw this idea out there. I don't even spend time in the competition forum but I thought this would be fun, personally, so I wanted to see what other people thought.

Basically, I wanted to do a little AGS music video clip for a song or two. Just silly little things, nothing super amazing or anything. I thought it'd be fun if a bunch of people perhaps all tried to same thing with songs they like, even if it's just part of a song. You could do a serious one or a totally stupid piece of crap... I think they'd all be great!

Not gonna delve too deeply into this, but would anyone else want to?

I'm gonna do one eventually on my own anyway, just for fun.

EDIT: Shit, sorry. I thought I was in the Gen forum. Er, can someone move this please?
