I got to level 2 and I'm certain I know what to do but I can't do it because I'm at work and have no... things... to let me do so.

Kinoko, I'm starting to notice that you and I like and play all of the same games.

That's cause we're awesome.

QuoteSOA was brilliant, beautiful, heartfelt, and fun.Ã,  The only problem was the insane frequency of random battles while you were exploring the huge world map.Ã,  (Though I heard they severely lowered it for the Gamecube version.Ã,  I played the original Dreamcast version.)Ã,  One thing that game wasn't, though, was short.

Yep, exactly what I think. I originally played the Dreamcast version and HATED the english voice acting as well as getting tired of the constant battles (it took a long time to load the battle scene). I now have the GC version, in Japanese, and it is indeed much better. Fewer random battles, voice acting is good and there are lots of great extra missions built in.

By the way, that advice comes from Dr Phil ^_-

I miss Dr Phil... no Dr Phil in Japan.

Then you sir, need to play Skies of Arcadia. It's... did I use the word engaging? It's engaging.

Yep, we've all been there. That panic that you can't say, `In the future...` anymore because it's there and you have to start doing something about it.

My best advice is to make the decision - either one, and live with it for a few days to a week. Really decide on it mentally and act as if that were your final decision. You'll soon get a much better idea of exactly how that feels. Then try the other one.

Well, you may be somewhat disappointed in GoA if you're hoping for that, but hopefully it will take hours. Not Skies of Arcadia hours though.

Neither adventure games, but Breath of Fire II and Terranigma both moved me. Particularly Breath of Fire II has moments that bring me to tears every time. It's one thing for a game these days with orchestral music and gorgeous graphics to do that but quite another for a very early tile-based RPG to do so.

Specifically in BoFII, there's a scene where an older sister has to turn permanently into a bird to aid the quest, but during the night before the ceremony, her little sister locks herself in a room and becomes a bird instead, with the older sister screaming at the door. Another scene has a seemingly heartless, cruel mother sacrifice herself to save her son who nearly dies being crushed by a huge stone block. His mother shoves him out of the way and get splattered right before his eyes. That one always gets me.

I'm trying to think of other games that make me cry... hmm, can't think of any others specifically.

I think the truly great games are ones like Skies of Arcadia. That game has hours and hours and hours of sheer game play with very little filler at all. It just keeps going and going with new stories and quests and it's exciting the whole way through.

I wish more games were like that. Just supremely long and constantly engaging.

Okay, the thread is up in the Competitions forum,  I hope Gil locks it sometime soon (don't go posting there!).

The date is October 30th. Hopefully I'll have my demo ready by then.

It's time for another Release Something! I think. The last one was a success so hopefully we can make this one even better! For everyone looking for some motivation to get their game completed or even write a few more words of dialogue, consider this your chance.

ABOUT RELEASE SOMETHING:
This isn't a competition as such, just a big free-for-all where we can all showcase our talents. Basically, a date is set for "Release Something!" Day and on that day, people are invited to post to this thread anything they like, really. For example, some sprites,Ã,  screenshots of your game, music, sound effects, backgrounds, rooms, a plugin, a storyboard, a demo, or if you can manage it, a full game. Heck, even if it's 95% done or 1% done, if you wanna release it, you go for it!

WHEN:
I set the date for October 30th, just in time for Halloween, I guess (even though I don't celebrate it). This gives us just over a month to work on things which I think is plenty of time without being too far away.

Remember, anything you want, as little or as much of it as you want! Get working, people!

Note: This thread will be locked until October 30th. Then you can go nuts.

Out of what's been mentioned already, I totally agree with Farlander, and whoever mentioned Dr Moriarty (I LOVE LoEG btw) and Mr. Hyde for mentioning Percy (one of the few movie characters I -truly- felt hate towards. I find that movie difficult to watch because of him).
#1152
Well, I'll probably start the thread later on then (got classes now)

There's no better measure than success. I get sick of villains that make stupid mistakes so that the hero can win. I have great admiration for genuinely clever/intelligent villains.

I can't think of any off the top of my head but combine that quality with sheer charm and ...cooleness and you've got my favourite villain.

Release Something! part 2.

I've had a few people ask, but I didn't want to make this too regular. Anyway, I'm thinking of starting the next Release Something soon with the deadline perhaps at the end of October.

Could I get some feedback on whether people think this is a good idea or not? It just feels like about the right time, to me. But what matters is how it feels... to YOU.

I reckon I could work hard and get my demo out by then.

Hehehehe. I fell madly in love with AC for several months, then broke the no-time-warp rule and ruined it's mystique. After that, I knew I could miss events and play later by changing the GCs clock and I had no morals about it anymore, so I slowly played the game less and less. Once I got to Japan, I got a craving for it again so I'm back to playing it just about every day, but it's obviously not as fun anymore (even though the e+ version has a lot of extra features).

I'll probably play AC on and off for the rest of my days until I'm luckily enough to get Bob. My friend had Bob in his town and I was so jealous. I want a town full of cats.

As I've said before, the problem is that there's no one kind of RPG. It would be a heck of a task to write a tute on RPGs in general. Realistically, you have to write about a specific kind of RPG, or even just the mechanics of one aspect of an RPG. Much like how different a 90's Lucasarts adventure game is from an old text adventure.

I just want to say that Law's advice was spot on. Think of what you want in your RPG, try to work out how you could script it, try it, and if it doesn't work, try to fix your mistakes etc. In the end, ask for help/advice.

Animal Crossing.

It's not my favourite game, but it's the game I find myself wanting to remake and constantly thinking of improvements for. There may well be a sequel, but given how much time has passed since the original, I think it's unlikely.

I'd basically like more of the same... but more! A bigger wardrobe and all different, more/different furniture etc. Extra abilities, much more dialogue with the animals, ability to hit animals with shovels and be bad in general.

Honestly, I just don't want to get into it because I'd be here all day, but I have a lot of things I'd like to add in. I used to want to make a 2D AC in AGS, and I have no doubt that I almost could (a couple of features just wouldn't be possible in 2D, like changing your clothes), but then they pretty much did that when they remade the game for the GBA (or DS? I can't remember).

I thought of a couple of other games but when I really think of it, I don't really want sequels of them. Giftpia is far to pure and perfect as it is. Terranigma, well, it was the third in a series and the best of the lot. Breath of Fire was perfected in the sequel... Harvest Moon, well, there are already more of those than I can play. Paper Mario - sequel was amazing.

Er, as far as adventure games go, all my favourites have great sequels anyway.

Perhaps Cruise for a Corpse? I had a lot of fun with that game, I'd like to play the same style of game again.

I'm not gonna get too deeply involved in this, but Farlander... after reading what you've written here, I have to say that I think you've completely and utterly missed the whole point of the Simpsons.

I don't think the current seasons are as good as the old stuff, but everytime I find myself complaining about them, I find myself watching one and cracking up. There's STILL a lot of gold in the Simpsons even today.

I better not see anyone talk shit about Futurama though. There'll be corpses everywhere.

I knew about this but it has very little point in Japan. I'd go, `Arrr shiver me timbers!` and everyone'd have their dictionaries out wondering why I want them to shake a piece of wood.

I might explain this to my adult class later on tonight though. I'll teach them some pirate phrases :P

Advanced Technical Forum / Re: CCS plugin help

My favourite thing about CCS is being able to define a path/set of actions then pause it and resume, rather than constantly restarting.
