Well an alternative way is to use a translation file, just write those strings in a translation text file with whatever programmes that can do it, you can even make such programme with AGS itself.

Hehe Kinoko, I know what you're for, you should actually check out my two AGS "Japanese" translators (you know where to find them := ), even though your font may not use the same character assignments as mine, you can probably find uses from their sources.

Well, I HAD thought about that, but you know, I'm not very good with the technical stuff ^_^ But how does your translator output those characters in the final translation file? Can't I use the same text it does for characters 16-31?

EDIT: The major problem I had with the ASCII table was that I didn't know what all the CAN and EM and SUB and whatnot meant. I gathered the red characters were what you type on the keyboard to get that number character, but how could I type those in the left-hand column? I guess I can't... seriously, what's the point of them then?

Hrrm :\ Is that really all I can do? I think it's nigh on impossible for me to write the entire text of a game like that.

Stupid ASCII!! Why does everything have to get in the way of me doing a Japanese translation?

Well, because it isn't specific to AGS I thought I'd ask here. It's really that I just don't know how to read that table, or what half of the symbols mean. If someone wants to move it, it's fine with me.

The display thing won't work because I need to use these characters in amongst others in strings.

Using an ASCII table (such as http://www.lookuptables.com/), how can I tell what to write in an AGS script to make use of characters 16-31? Or... can I?

You definitely need to sort the magician out.

Uh... (god, it's my own game and I can't remember how it works), I'm pretty sure you need to have a coversation with him, not just show him the deed.

I personally wouldn't download new software just for a drawing competition.

I haven't got any slowdown yet, but I haven't tried it in any 'strenuous' circumstances yet. My game file size went down from 13 to 10 meg. It'll be interesting to see how big a difference there is in the finished game (which I expect to be around 50 meg).

Done! I set the date for the 25th of June... if that's way too short, we can always have another one later, and the idea is just to release SOMETHING, even something small like a gif.
#1409
Well, for all you people with dribs and drabs of a game that may or may not be finished someday, and all you people on the edge of completing something but lacking the motivation to do so, let me acomodate you.

This isn't a competition as such, just a big free-for-all where we can all showcase our talents. Basically, a date is set for "Release Something!" Day (I guess, I just invented it) and on that day, people are invited to post to this thread anything they like, really. For example, some sprites,Ã,  screenshots of your game, music, sound effects, backgrounds, rooms, a plugin, a storyboard, a demo, or if you can manage it, a full game. Heck, even if it's 95% done or 1% done, if you wanna release it, you go for it!

I've decided to set the date for 3 weeks. 2 seemed too short for some to get their 'stuff' done, 4 seemed too long to wait. So, let's say the 25th of June. Seems like a nice round date.

Remember, anything you want, as little or as much of it as you want! Get working, people!

The Time has come! Release whatever you had done, NOW!

General Discussion / Release Something!

I'm actually stealing this idea from the game maker forums. I thought it was a pretty crappy idea there, but I reckon it could be cool here (I guess because I have a lot more respect for what people are producing here).

Basically, the idea is "Release Something". A date is set, and on that date everyone (well, anyone who's interested) posts -something- related to their game. It could be some sprites, some screenshots, a demo, a little one-roomer game, some music... anything you want.  This could even inspire you to finish your full game by the date.

It doesn't matter if what you release isn't complete, or if you don't think it's good, you just release something. I think this could be a great way to motivate us to finish something, to get started on something or to play around with an idea. It's also fun to get a look at what other people are producing, and that alone may motivate us.

Would anyone be interested in this? Any thoughts?

Nobody's ever heard of it? My good man, it's sitting on my DVD shelf ^_^ One of my favourite movies of all time.

I won't comment too much until I play the game, because - warning - I'm a real fan of the Oz series (not the stupid movie, the books). I'm always skeptical of "dark" things like this because so many seem really full of themselves, as if it's an original concept (bloody fucking American McGee). So, good luck on the game, I'm happy to see Oz making an appearance, and I -don't- expect this to be true to the books, thankyou for the disclaimer ^_-

If I could make a suggestion (I don't know what you have planned)... throw in plenty of traditional Oz references. Return to Oz worked brilliantly because even though it didn't follow the books perfectly, it kept a real "theme" going with the emerald-coloured objects and objects/characters reflected in both worlds.

Here's another big complaint I have about making people afraid to swear. "F-bomb" is like nails on a chalkboard for me. It's got to be the stupidest word ever created. No offense to you, Blackthorn... I'm just saying that I can't stand it :P I prefer f*ck or even "the F-word" any day of the week.

I always find it interesting that so many women get offended by the c*nt word, when so many feminists get offended that a word for OUR genitalia is considered the most horrendous word in our language.

I personally think differently, and I use the word when I damn well feel like it. I mean, SOMEONE'S genitalia has to be the really bad word, so why not women? (Okay, seriously, if I think about it back in the old days, when it WAS offensive for that very reason, I do think that's really bloody rich, but these days it's evolved... it really is only offensive because of the word itself, not it's meaning).

Honestly, I think in a few years it's gonna go the same way f*ck did. People will just get over it. It's NOT offensive in nature, it's only offensive because you were brought up to believe it is. Same as all swearwords.

It's actually not true about it being worth more in Aust. There is a market for it in bali.

I don't think a single person has the right (apart from her and the cops present, perhaps) to say that she's guilty or inoocent. We -don't- know. We can give an opinion, but that's all.

I'm not assuming she's one or the other, but I do believe it was very, very lousy for her to be convicted like that. I watched the court case and listened to the judge's reasons, and the fact of the matter is that she wasn't proven guilty. No one could prove she didn't do it, no one could prove she did. I don't know if she's innocent or guilty, but I know she shouldn't have been convicted the way she was.

I agree that we should respect Indonesia's law, if for nothing else but the sake of good relations between countries (at least for us Aussies). We'd want them to respect our laws. I believe their legal system has some rather serious flaws though, and I think they have the wrong idea about how to deter drug traffickers (because lets face it, a lot of them are plain stupid. The penalties don't matter because they don't believe they'll be caught).

I personally believe an incredible injustice has been done. As utterly, UTTERLY sick as I am of the name Shapelle Corby (god jesus, it's been on tv for AGES!), I don't believe what was done to her is right at all. She shouldn't have been convicted until she was proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt. 20 years is WAY too long for trafficking marijuana (as much as I hate the stuff), and their disgusting jail cells should only be used for rapists and mass murderers (who would likely be killed over there anyway so what's the point?).

Seriously, what's everyone talking about? @_@ I have no idea... I wanna know! What was so bad?

I seriously have no problem with "dirty language" myself. I feel stupid calling it that. That's just me though, I don't even like parents stopping their children from hearing "bad words". Seems pointless to me.

I've always been the sort of person who, if I knew I didn't want to get pregnant, I would never, ever, under any circumstance have sex without decent protection (despite how tempting it can be sometimes), so... the reason I'm thinking ahead is just so I have some ideas in my head about the future, and I don't put myself in a position where I might be tempted.

SSH: I hope your surgery goes smoothly and all that ^_^ Thanks again for all the info!

What dirty language? ^_^ I love dirty language.

It's true. I'm sorry Fluke but that picture was bad to the point of ridiculous. I wouldn't know where to start. It doesn't mean there's anything wrong with you, but there's just too much wrong with it to be able to crit it properly. All I'd be able to think of is "Go away and practise drawing some more. Learn about drawing techniques, get some books, come back after another year or so of practise".

Plus, it's not like it was for a game or anything, which -most- stuff in the Critic's Lounge is for.
