I'm having some trouble with that walkthrough...

Spoiler

When I shoot the grenades at the bridge and bounce the bridge, it shoots them into the air and they explode. Same thing happens with the keycard except that it just falls down... not getting to said stickman.

Actually, I had a dream the other night where I was both IN an RPG and creating it in AGS at the same time, walking around and finding things I need to fix, better story elements... Id been working solidly on my RPG for days at that stage. Last night, I had another dream that I had finished my game, and was getting people to beta test for me while I went on some wild adventure.

I also have the thing where I try to work out how actions/movies/ads can be done in AGS. All the time, actually @_@

Which is, and this is a really important tip, possibly THE most important factor in making a game.

I REALLY want to see a finished game from you Tanker, and I know you can do it if you just keep yourself focussed and start off simple. That background you put in the critic's lounge... where was that going? I totally recommend you go back to that and give a small game made from your own art a go. It was fine! It's FAR more enjoyable playing a game with someone's mediocre art skills than with someone who's ripped great art from elsewhere.

Honestly, Tanker. Have you played Monkey Island? 1? 2? Because you'd want to have played at least both of those to be making a fan game. I mean, you can do what you like but if you want people to play it...

So from what I can gather, you've ignored all the advice people have been giving you over the last couple of days about taking things slowly, sticking it out with projects and making a simple game. Weren't you already starting another game?

Sorry if I sound harsh but... I don't know... this just feels really old.

I think I'm going to get a stiff drink.

Quote•    Batman (1989): Loved it. Keaton was the best Batman ever.
•    Beetlejuice (1988): Loved it. Keaton was AWESOME as Beetlejuice.

I second those!

Those comics made me laugh actually out lous, and not too many things do that ^_^

I'm so far much more impressed than I expected to be (even though I don't care much for Raz). From what I can see, it has a lot of similarities to Voodoo Vince - which is a great game, though more platformer and less adventure.

Erik: Ahh, I've had that one a lot too! I often think of 'saving my game' before doing risky things... if only.

I don't really get this with adventure games, but I get a very bad case of it with two other games. Jet Set Radio - basically a rollerblading game where you "grind" all sorts of objects and places. After playing it for a little while, I'll be out in the real world and I can't stop myself seeing all sorts of places to grind, like chimney stacks with spiralling metal twirling down them.

More recently, I've been playing a fabulous game called Katamari Damashii, where you're basically rolling a ball around on top of every conceivable object and picking them all up to make an even bigger ball. It's AWESOME, I can't recommend enough playing this game. Anyway, after playing that for awhile, I just find myself looking at EVERYTHING and imagine rolling it up, and how bits of things would seperate...

Damn straight. This is about all we can expect from 'adventure game' these days. Above all that, it's freaking Tim Schaffer ^_^

Beginners' Technical Questions / Re: Enemies
Thu 24/02/2005 13:50:13
It's one of those tough things because typically enemies in games like Zelda, etc all move in different ways. A really good way to get ideas is simply to play one of those games and watch the way enemies behave. Certainly, using bounding box collision to detect when you're near an enemy then having him come at you is a good one.  One of my enemies is simply on completely random movement so it never zeroes in on you, as such (it's a mouse though, so it makes sense).

Everything you came up with about attacking is exactly what I have, pretty much, so if you find a better way, I'd like to know it ^_^

The greatest of all - BATMAN! ^_^

Damnit! I thought I was being all new and current and cool. Oh well.

Quick update, I've made the game's webpage now (check the first post) which I think is pretty snazzy. It's also got more screenshots and a more detailed completion report.

BTW, thanks everyone for the nice comments! ^_^

This is really a very unimportant suggestion, but something that I think would be handy. I often use "Fullscreen preview" and it'd be a nice feature I think to be able to scroll when using this if the background is bigger than the screen. I often have large backgrounds and when I preview them, I sometimes only get a small corner of the background. I think it'd be nice to be able to move my cursor to the edge of the screen and have it scroll if applicable.

Again, though... not a big thing if it's too difficult, just something I've been thinking about lately.

I'm not sure if this has been posted elsewhere, I'm sorry if it has.

Anyone interested in Psychonauts will most certainly want to get a look at this trailer. It's quite long, no gameplay but shows at least one scene from the opening (I'm assuming).

I think you'll have to become a member of Gamespot to get it, but... http://www.gamespot.com/ps2/action/psychonauts/index.html?q=psychonauts

He got offered a job, and he picked up and moved within a few weeks (despite the fact that we all agreed Sydney was one of the worst places on Earth on a previous trip there). I think he's finding it okay. He writes for one of those half-size kid magazines, "Total Gamer". Worth getting a copy of just to see his reviews ^_^

Firstly, you completely misunderstood my quip about lava. I wasn't using lava as an example because it's destructive, rather because it's a thing. I could have made my point with "pot plant". You said violence EXISTS and I was saying that just because something exists, where's the motivation to make a game about it? This pen in front of me exists... no motivation to play a game about it. I'm not saying you -shouldn't- either, just that that's a pretty meaningless argument as to why something should be done.

Secondly, how do you feel about D&D? My group recently lost Patrick to the horrors of Sydney and we could use another player. I keep trying to think of people I know who might be non-horrified by role playing...

Thirdly, to get back on topic... I also, unfortunately, don't believe there's any commercial future for adventure games in general. The odd one here or there but I just don't see the genre going anywhere. I think it'll stay where it is, in the hands of independant gamers. As much as I'd like it around, I'm also just grateful it exists where it does.

The thing that really jumped out at me as being a little off was the "shadow" on her skirt. It just looks kinda... well, I think it shows too much :P What prog did is a little nicer, but the original sprite was good. That piece of shading just imediately made me think "hooker".

Gorgeous! ^_^ It's simple, yet interesting,  realistic and "dark" while still being bright and colourful. Hope that made sense to you.
