General Discussion / RPGs anyone?
Mon 08/11/2004 04:28:54
Just wondering how many people here, and I do realise this is an adventure game community, play RPGs? I'm making an RPG with AGS and I wonder how many people from this community would play it. Do you play your western Ultima style RPGs or Japanese RPGs more? Or both?

What's the deal, people?  :(

I play Japanese style RPGs mostly, like Terranigma, Secret of Mana, etc. That's the style my game will be in. So who would actually be interested in playing it?

Looks great! You know, the whole background style is fantastic and I'd love to play a game like that. I especially, for some reason, like the lamps on the walls. Also, and I'm sorry to critisize but the character doesn't seem to quite fit in with the detail and style of the background... it's still good though, don't get me wrong.

I -love- this character. I question whether I could ever get sick of the "big gun" / "shoot em in the face" humour.

Yep, there are too many. Hundreds of "favourites", you can't possibly pick one if you're someone who's seen it all. Well, I guess you can but I think it'd be difficult and pointless ^_^

Here's a couple off the top of my head though:

Bart: Still just a potato.

Mr Burns: Out of my way! I'm a motorist!

Well, the starting as a fighter is easy enough to get past. You just need to change EGO's view at the time the player chooses which class to be (I assume this happens?). You can change it permanently at that point, with ChangeCharacterView instead of SetCharacterView, to make it the default.

As for having to script a different view for each class... it will no doubt be a lot of extra scripting, there's no avoiding that. I'm sure people have some good ideas for you, though.

I've never used this so I'm not sure, but couldn't you create them all as seperate characters and just set the player character at the beginning of the game? Still, I can see extra scripting even with this option.

Woohoo! Thanks again, CJ. Setting the fade colour and having background speech removed automatically will be really useful for me.

General Discussion / Re: better graphic editor
Thu 04/11/2004 02:50:51
For one thing, PSP isn't a "photo editor". It's my favourite graphics editor and I couldn't recommend anything better than that for most things, especially adventure game art. I'm sure someone else could give you a recommendation though...

What's "the most mork" mean? o_O

I think you're going to find that there's no way out of putting a lot of work into your graphics. It's simple maths really... unless you want to use someone else's graphics in your game, they're going to take time, and if you want them to look decent, they're going to be somewhat difficult.

Why is it that SO much stuff doesn't work on XP? All I ever hear about slightly old software (or really old) is that it doesn't work on XP.

I'll be 31 in 10 years, going on 32, and that's not so old. I can't really guess where I'll be. I -hope- I'll be married by then (given that it's already being discussed, I wouldn't want to be still simply discussing it for 10 god damn years), with a decent house... I hope I have a decent job involving languages, preferably interpreting. Maybe I'll be in Japan, or somewhere else... who knows.

That's all just a very general speculation based on the general direction my life is currently taking. As Tim said, that's a LONG time and you almost never end up where you thought you'd be 10 years ago.

Btw, 38 isn't that old ^_^ My boyfriend'll be 39 in 10 years . . . Actually, that's a little scary, I shouldn't have said that o_O

AGS Games in Production / Re: Mister No
Mon 25/10/2004 14:19:15
Not to offend others, but this is one of those relatively rare AGS games that LOOKS like a game. Really nice job on the artwork, it's a great style. Sounds like a fun story too... don't worry about time. Jyst go with your gut and make it as good as you think it should be ^_^

General Discussion / Re: Who is your hero???
Sun 17/10/2004 14:23:07
I wish I had some heroic story of some real life person who'd saved me.

It'll sound corny but really, and I mean it, my real heroes are my friends and family because these are the people I look to to improve my own personal qualities.

In terms of famous people... heroes? Can't really think of anyone. Idols... Shigeru Miyamoto, for sure. Rumiko Takahashi (brilliant female manga artist), Osamu Tezuka (brilliant male manga artist), Ron Gilbert, Freddy Mercury, Brian May, David Bowie, Terry Pratchett, Dianna Wynne Jones... off the top of my head.

General Discussion / Re: About hair
Sun 17/10/2004 14:11:48
I had, until recently, what most would say was way too much hair. It was the length of hair that would have people stopping you on the street, and little kids pointing. It was a complete pain in the ass (not as bad as you might imagine) but I loved it. When the wind blew right, it felt sooo nice, and it was warm, and it gave me a LOT of possibilities for things I could do with it.

I recently got about... a foot or so cut off. I'm never getting it much longer again because this is just as nice (it's about ... just past the middle of my back) and I can't believe how much time is saved in brushing and drying it. Girls with super short hair keep telling me to get it cut because short hair is convenient, and it isn't hot, you can feel the breeze on your hair, blah de blah de blah. I say, pff to that! I may get it cut one day but only when I feel like I know a short hair style that's prettier than long, flowing hair ^_^

As for men... all I can say is that if you have long hair, PLEASE KEEP IT WASHED AND VERY CLEAN! I cannot STAND scruffy hair on guys, it drives me insane and ... I'm pretty easy with hugs to my friends but I won't so much as stand near a guy that has anything less than recently washed hair. It just seems to be a particular trait with long haired guys to keep it grubby. Yech. Dont do it, guys. You don't have to be a metrosexual, just be hygienic.

Apart from letting people know about Cirque here and posting a little link on my own webpage, I never did anything. At a recent sci-fi/comic/cult convention, I had a table (for my comics) and gave away little pamphlets with a bit of a description of my game and a url for it. I have no idea how successful that was though. I hope at least a few people checked it out ^_^ Someone suggested I put it on a cd and sell that, but I just can't justify putting a little 4MB game on a cd and charging for it. ANYONE can download this thing and I'm happy enough to have anyone play it.

Honestly, I have no problem with people charging for their games but I just can't justify it myself. Unless I put some incredible work into it...

Back on topic, I think some of the best marketting that can be done for these games is right here at the AGS forums and website, and other gaming sites. Underdogs is a good one if they pick your game up. I also have -no- idea how they got ahold of my game but it's there now @_@

General Discussion / Re: AGS BLOG
Wed 13/10/2004 15:28:17
Although I'll probably regret this, kinoko.blogspot.com
Contains very little to nothing about AGS but my game gets the occasional mention, usually to the tune of, "I've had no time to work on my game lately..."
I wouldn't recommend reading this unless somehow, magically, you're a really good friend of mine. It'll bore you, unless you like occasional rants about stuff I freaking hate.

DG: I'm linking to your blog from mine whether you like it or not.... bwahahaha!!!

I'm sure I could get it to work okay, but it's just incredibly messy for what I'm doing with this, when having DisplaySpeechBackground be a little more customisable would be so perfect. I'd just like to make that suggestion. If it doesn't go through, then I'll go the long way around out of necessity.

I'm not trying to sound demanding... ^_^ It would just be nice.

strazer: Seems fine, but would it work for multiple displays on screen in different posistions, starting at different times, being displayed at once? Just thinking about naming the int there... it'd give that name to multiple instances of the function, wouldn't it? Not sure ^_^;
#1917
I remember talk of modifying DisplaySpeechBackground to include x and y positioning (so, possibly a DisplaySpeechBackgroundAt?) and automatic removal after a period of time. If these haven't officially been added to a suggestion list, then I'm doing so now ^_^
#1918
While I can see the uses for this function, I hate the idea of specifying the pivot when importing. That really just sounds like a pain in the ass ^_^

I'd only go as far as recommending a "flip" (up/down) to go with the current "mirror" (left/right). I mean, that's just my opinion though.

I'm sick of all these propaganda stuff happening, especially at uni. I go there to study, not to have opinions thrown at me every day.

Halleluia! I get annoyed enough at the real elction but university politics... ARGH! Drives me insane. I just ignore everyone. You just know they're all failing their BAs because they spend all their time at uni campaigning and complaining about each other.

What's this even for? Are you gonna host your own TV show? Are you applying to be on Survivor? Are you going for a key grip job? What?
