General Discussion / Re: Hurricane a'coming!!!

I notice that noone in that supermarket shot is buying magazines. What, noone thinks they'll need reading material while all this is happening?

Ah, whoops, thanks for pointing that out.

Though I plan on taking those awful comics down at some point anyway @_@ They're so embarrasing...

Hmmm, I'm not too sure on webpages that list webcomics, but I'm sure they must be there. I -do- know my friend's blog has a whole big section on some good ones so I'll give you that url. http://soliloquoy.siliconlegacy.com/

One of the most famous webcomics which has a rather substantial cult following is Megatokyo - which I despise :P But you know, you might like it...

Of course, there'd be hundreds of comics that aren't available on the web which as you pointed out, would probably be mostly available at conventions. Some people, particularly these days, have little manga "anthologies" and magazines out but again, I only see them at conventions so you'd really have to do some googling yourself to find any. My friend runs one caled 'Moshi Moshi' which is pretty cool for an indy magazine.

Ahhh, thanks. I didn't realise it worked that way...

Actually, I need to specify a sprite slot because I don't want pixel/pixel collision detection in most cases, rather say, for an interaction to take place when the characters feet are touching... or something like that. It would be fine if I had a purely top-down style game, but it's on an odd almost 45% angle, so it looks odd having interactions without the characters overlapping a bit :)

Given that... does the above code need to be changed?

I've zipped up the game files and uploaded them here:

http://www.anime.com.au/Katt/misc/bugtest.zip

This is all the bare essentials of the particular problem and I half expected it to go away... nope.

You can put EGO in room 2 or 3 and he can still (by pressing 'x' to interact) interact with the girls in room 1 by going to the same coordinates in any other room. If you go to the top (pink) girl, it'll crash because of the FaceCharacter line. The other two, you'll just get normal text window interactions.

I'm not sure if the Molerat interaction is still working in the 3rd room or not. It didn't for me but it's a much simper version of the proper code in my game (normally, if you go near him and contact, you'll do a little "injured" animation).

I don't think it's the CCS, I'm pretty positive its the Collision Detector. If I comment out the defining collision lines for a character, the glitch stop working for that character.

An RPG is a difficult thing to write a tutorial because there's no one centralized kind of RPG. I'd be happy to write a tutorial on the style of RPG I'm doing -after- I make my game. There's no way I'm writing one on all the different ways it could be done though.

Bowie! Bowie! Bowie!

Wow, I just played this for the first time and

I HATE YOU! WHY DID THE GAME STOP HALF-WAY?!

*ahem* Sorry, I'm over it.  What a fabulous game! Congratulations on the awards, you deserve them. When it the full version due? I should probably check the GiP forum actually.

The game was... well, everyone's already said it, I'm sure you know. I'm dying to see the rest ^_^

I've never experienced ANY kind of natural disaster. I'm always hoping I'll be involved in a flood or a cyclone one day... *sigh*

Good luck with your hurricane. Take some shots with a handicam and sell them to the news.

WOW! It looks great! A real original concept, seems like utter fun and the graphics are gorgeous and colourful. Release it soon!

I've just noticed that some characters are being detected in rooms they don't exist in. This will happen in any room, even a newly created one.

I have 3 static characters in room 1, and one character (controlled by the Character Control System plugin) in room 6. In room 6, the 3 characters from room 1, even though they don't visually appear to be there, can still be interacted with. This really screws up with one of the interactions which includes a FaceCharacter line, which shuts the game down telling me the character isn't in the room.

It seems to be a bug/problem with the Collision Detector Plugin (v1.10) as all of these characters have collision detections assigned to them.  Has anyone else experienced this? The plugin hasn't been updated since 2002 so I guess it could be incompatible with current AGS versions... It's worked beautifully up til now so it's a pity.

Thanks CJ, I'd really appreciate it. I mean, I -could- look to cut the characters down but the game would suffer for it. It's not the most important thing in the world, but I just thought I'd ask. If it doesn't happen, I'll work around it, no problem.

It's mainly due to the fact that there are so many monsters and townspeople in the game. If it were a turn-based RPG, I'm sure the monsters wouldn't be a problem, but alas...

Barbarian: Groovy, thanks for that ^_^ (though I don't think I've updated that webpage in centuries... it's probably no longer visable through the dust).

AGA: Aww, thanks for that! It still makes me feel all cool to see reviews (good or bad) of Cirque...

Eric: http://www.anime.com.au/Katt/manga/mahiru/

It's actually quite old now @_@ I did it at the start of last year. People keep asking when the next installemnt will be out and I think I told them I'd have about 5 issues by the time this next comic convention (on in 2 weeks) rolled around. Hmm! I do most definitely plan on doing a whole bunch more but I'm just more interested in gaming right now. It's actually rather crap so don't expect too much. It's more like an issue 0 than an issue 1 and the real story gets going after this...
#1993
Well, I can say that almost none of the characters are stationary but thanks for the tip! ^_^ I may be able to use it...
#1994
Yep, that's the way it is.

Seriously, this guy could've played the game and left it at that. Next step up, he could've sent me an email saying he enjoyed it. He's gone -way- above that and I was extremely flattered ^_^
#1995
I just thought I'd share this because it makes me feel gooey inside (and by that I don't mean the way acid makes you feel after you drink it).

I was recently emailed by a lovely man in the US who told me he'd played Cirque with his two daughters and they all thoroughly enjoyed it. So much so, that he's buying a copy of my comic and giving me a considerable amount extra as thanks for the game. He was so utterly lovely about it, I regained a lot of my lost faith in humanity.

AWWWWW!

I was rather surprised he didn't find it offensive...

Since I'm not sure what the progress on the new suggestion system is, and this still seems to be the place for suggestions, I hope I'm doing the right thing here.

I've already brought this up once but I thought I'd submit it officially. Wondered if anyone would benefit from an increase in the number of allowed characters in AGS. I know I most certainly would (in fact, to do what I want, -some- increase is necessary).

Most people will be doing adventure games and probably won't need this, I realise... I do know that quite a lot of us are trying our hand at RPGs right now. I don't think we should be given any priority or anything, but... would anyone else find this useful?

I was thinking of an increase to a neat 200 characters or something.
#1997
I'd pitch in, for sure, but I really wouldn't want AGS to become open source. It's just a personal thing, I guess, but I think it'd almost... "dirty" the program ^_^ I'm quite happy with the way it is now. Maybe I'm scared of change, but I think there are quite a few good reasons for not making it open-source.
#1998
It's true, I don't think someone like him would have the intelligence to pull that off ^_^ In 5 Days all he really managed was random killing. Maybe floating in space for all those years heightened his IQ. We like to think that scary, retarded people will be autistic geniuses (genii?) but really... murderers are rarely very clever, and I would think the ones 'damaged' as children would be even less clever.

Still, this has absolutely zip to do with what I thought of the game. Great stuff!

This is my favourite change: "View preview window now remembers its location on the screen for next time."

That was really annoying before given that I almost always have WinAmp sitting in the top corner of the screen ^_^ Thanks!

What kind of battle system are you using? A little more3 detail needed before I can offer any help...
