General Discussion / Re: Seeking approval
Fri 07/05/2004 12:51:09
*sigh* I can never participate in these "damn my childhood" conversations ^^;;; I had a great childhood from a family point of view. My parents were always encouraging, but didn't stick their noses into my business. They never pushed me as such, and never got down on me if I didn't do well. Er, I'm not trying to rub this in anyone's face, btw. I'm just saying... :P So I can never go on about not getting approval. I got all the approval I needed, and to be honest, it didn't really affect me -that- much.

I know it can be said the other way around, but coming from someone who had no problems in this area, I'd just like to say (from MY point of view) that if you didn't get the greatest sense of approval from your parents... although it's sad and I'm sure it hurt, don't feel like you missed out on some incredibly vital part of being a person or anything. I mean, I'm REALLY not trying to say, "Pff, get over it" or "It doesn't matter at all!", don't think that. It's hard to explain... I guess I'm just trying to say that it doesn't need to affect your confidence as a person now.

I think I seek approval from people more these days now that I've grown up, and even then it's more in my artistic ventures than anything. I like to be appreciated, and have people tell me that they like the things I create. Maybe so I don't think that I'm wasting my time.

As a person though, I've probably got 100x the self confidence I had when I was a little girl, and most of that came from moving out and living away from my parents (nothing against them, my point is just that I felt like an adult not living at home) and getting out of a high school environment. I very rarely feel the need to be validated as a human being, because I know that most of what I do is what I believe is right. Obviously, I hate being disliked but in a world with so many people, I know that can't be avoided so it doesn't bother me more than it should, really.

I don't know, I could be wrong or not have thought about it enough, but I think that the only validation I'm after is in my comics and artistic persuits ^_^ At least the way I am now. Maybe it'd be different if I got dumped and my friends started ignoring me. In my art though, I definitely need validation. As much as I can enjoy what I do myself, and think it's great... I'm -always- after comments on my work.

Ahh, good old Deluxe Paint was my poison. I used to have SO much fun with the snowflake/mirror feature. *sigh* Now I'm gonna go and cry about how I don't have an Amiga anymore.

Honestly, if you don't like any of it, that's fine. Noone saying you HAVE to like it (at least, I'm not), but just don't complain about it in general if you haven't seen more than a lot of the crappy titles that get released outside of Japan and then dubbed into sickeningly poor english.

I've been watching anime for half of my life and I can tell you a million titles more that I hate rather than those that I like or love. As has been pointed out, 'anime' just can't be called a genre in itself. It's not like saying "I hate Disney movies" or "I hate Pixar's movies". It's like saying, "I hate Korean movies" and even though of course Japan has a great film industry outside of animation, it's a huge bitch of a chunk out of the industry.

I agree that Witch Hunter Robin is just fucking awful >_< I love a lot of shoujo though, Marmalade Boy, Kimagure Orange Road and Yawara are some of my all-time favourites :P

Personally, I don't think I can imagine ANYONE hating Kochikame... especially the movie.

I can almost agree with Ryukage about hating Disney. I certainly do, especially these days. Then I remember growing up with Donald Duck and Sword in the Stone and I have to remind myself that I used to love it once. I can't believe Disney still parades Mickey Mouse around ... how many children under the age of 15 today will even know who the hell he is? I also don't give a flying crap for bloody Nemo. I do have a lot of love for Pixar but it's technical love instead of that nice gooey "I love all of your films" love ^_^ I think Toy Story 1 was all I've ever actually liked of theirs, and only because of the extra characters. God, would someone please put Woody and his little bitch in a blender?

I recently saw the Ring (Japanese) for the first time and surprisingly, I liked it. The problem with that is that I -hate- horror movies, PARTICULARLY Japanese horror movies which are without a doubt usually the scariest in the world. I'm the most sensitive scaredy cat you could find, so the fact that I watched it and remained fine says something about just how scary it was. It was more like a good crime solving movie... I was kind of disappointed about it, given the amount of hype around it years back. I thought it would be one of the scariest movies ever.

While I'm on the subject... and I haven't seen it, but didn't the American version actually put a big 'ring' on the video in the movie? Pah :P They have to make everything so bloody literal and obvious.

Once more, an new version is up -_- At least from the secondary url (http://www.anime.com.au/Katt/misc/cirque.zip) as I don't have access to the other ftp account just yet. Both links should point to the new version by tonight.

v1.3 - Hopefully, I've fixed the cottage door problem, the dog turning into a blue cup problem and the problem that allowed you to get to the island without getting the fishing rod. They all baffled me, there didn't seem to be any specific thing wrong that I could see, but I think I've managed to get around them anyway.

If there are any more problems, PLEASE let me know. ^_^ Argh, this is so frustrating. When I make my next game, I'll know better than to release the game without checking things thoroughly.
#2426
It definitely seems to be a love or hate movie. I only know people who feel strongly either way. Of course, all the really smart people hate it ^_^
#2427
Ahhhh, thanks jaz-man! ^_^ I appreciate it.

Can anyone translate this for me? I don't even know what language it is... but it's about my game and I really wanna know what I says @_@

Starship Troopers. God, that movie sucks. SUUUUCKS, I tell you! The worst thing is that most of my idiotic friends love it and some consider it to be one of the best movies of all time. Suuuuucks, oh god, how I hate it. Poo to it.

As for even calling 'anime' a genre, that's ridiculous. I won't go on, others have made good points, but it isn't a genre, it's a medium more than anything. Anime is just a general term for animation that comes from Japan. In Japan, it's the word for animation, but it -has- evolved in our language to mean Japanese animation. Anime has zillions of genres within it. Sure, you can hate cartoons and even the Japanese style of them (though within 'anime' there are zillions of different styles) but I just hate people generalizing with what kinds of shows they are. In the western world, you're generally exposed to a tiny percentage of and often stupid and poor quality anime shows/movies and trust me, these are not indicitive of even a majority of what you'll find in Japan.

OK, I won't go on, but just... genre... blech. I hate that word.

Zillion IS a number, damnit! I'm making it one! Stay off my lawn!

I hate lots of movies. Honestly, it would just be stupid of me to try and think of the worst.

I AM glad however that various people mentioned the Matrix and Donnie Darko. I haven't seen either (and I plan on never seeing any Matrix movies as long as I live) but I just got so sick of everyone I know loving them to death. Not that the people I like have bas taste, but constantly hearing about these movies being insinuated as being the best movies ever just got on my nerves and I'm rebelling. So, it just makes me happy to hear people that really hate them.

Though, Indiana Jones and Cube ... great movies! Great, I tell you!!

The bulk of Cirque de Zale took about 3 months of reasonably hard work. I wouldn't work on it EVERY day... but most days, easily, and for long hours when I did. Actually, thinking about it now... wow @_@ I can't believe I'm still sane. If I make another game, given that I probably won't ever have a "summer holiday" as such again, it won't be worked on that intensely so will most definitely take much longer to make.

I don't mind at all if people write walkthroughs for my game - in fact, kudos to you Glarandel! I'd prefer it if people tried to solve the puzzles themselves but we all need the help of a walkthrough at some point or another. I was too busy living life and fixing all the many bugs that plagued the game's earlier days right after finishing it to write a walkthrough myself. I was always planning on doing it after things calmed down a bit but I have no problems with people takng the initiative themselves.

OK, I'm back now and although I'm tired and bitter thanks to Sydney, I've had a look over the bug reports. I'll have a look at the game later on and see what I can do. I'm fairly sure I know now why the door to the cottage acts up but... like I said, I'll check.

Nothing terribly constructive to say, except -thankyou- for the view preview, and repeatedly_execute_always functions! This solves a lot of problems for me in future game making.

yes, well. i'm not sure why, but like I said, i tried creating an invisble object in its place, moving it, and recreating the object on a different object number but it didn't work... I feel so confused...............          ...       ..............                ...........               ................. ....

If it is like my problem (and this one REALLY stumped me), have a look at the other hotspots you have in that room, and in particular, which ones are near the object that won't work. Do any of those hotspots/walk behinds etc go all the way to the edge of the room? That was what my problem was. For some reason, the engine just didn't like a hotspot being on any of the pixelks around the very edge of the room. It made everything near it act like a "walk to".

I hope that helps.

Yep, yep, I agree with you there. I've just recently noticed those god-awful channel 7 Sunrise ads and they instantly annoyed me. So what if for one day or one week, your ratings just happened to beat Today on channel 9? You're still the most retarded channel of them all!

It doesn't help that Sunrise is my most hated morning news program as it is. Bah, I hate shows promoting themselves in that way too. Bloody Rove just won't shut up about his freaking gold logie! Who even gives a turd about the logies?
#2437
Thanks everyone! I really appreciate the feedback!

Just in case anyone posts anymore bug repots etc, I'm gonna be gone for almost a week after tomorrow so don't think you're being ignored. I'll get to them all when I get back (if there are indeed any to be dealt with).

You have to recruit more people in your circus. Have you got Adrastos, Laria,  Zanebono and the bear?

General Discussion / Re:Australian/NZ accent
Tue 27/04/2004 12:54:36
I can't tell the difference between any Australian accents at all! I'm constantly asking foreigners if they can tell the difference between any different states' accents. I haven't really met anyone that can apart from one Korean guy. He couldn't tell me what the difference -was- though.

The wolf's head doesn't go with the mother. Try it with little red riding hoodie.
