General Discussion / Re:How do YOU say...

I have to stand up for this one ^_^

I'm an enormous fan of the SNES, it's my all-time favourite console (maybe next to the Dreamcast) and I say "snes" (not "snez"). Saying S N E S sounds weird to me but of course, I wouldn't mind if people did that. I just don't spell it out because it takes too long, but I think whichever way is fine. I think abbreviations are always pronounced one of those two ways - spelled out or read out.

Like, personally, I saw A G S, not ags. I never thought about it before but I suppose there would be some people that say ags.

It's all cool, man!

Well, firstly I'll say what I came here to say. I -love- this game. It may not have the best graphics and may have a lot of bugs and glitches (according to what I've read here but I've encountered none myself so far), but it's just so, as someone put it... GARFIELD! It's the most fun I've had playing an AGS game in ages. The first game I've played in awhile that has actually been interesting, fun, entertaining and has made me want to keep playing as opposed to pushing myself to continue. Even though your english isn't perfect, the general dialogue is very Garfield-esque and as a Garfield fan, I'm very happy to see a tribute to him that captures his spirit ^_^

Now - in regards to that messy PAWS business, take it from me, they CAN'T stop you from offering this game on a webpage, especially with all the disclaimers you use. You aren't selling the game or making ANY profit on it whatsoever so they cannot tell you to take it down.

They can ask you, and they can get mad or whatever the hell they like, but they can't force you. You're not insulting them or slandering them in any way. You've made a non-profit fan game that only a relatively small amount of people will ever see, and it's because you LOVE Garfield. That PAWS did this, especially after you were kind enough to let them know about it, really pisses me off and they're in my bad books now.

If you want to respect their wishes, then that's fine but it's an incredible shame for such a great game and 2 years of work and expectations to go down the drain because PAWS decides to be anal and irrational.

My point being that legally they can't stop you from distributing the game for free. Just put it back on the website and don't tell them about it. I'm sure they won't check.

Or do tell them about it, if you're feeling bold because they can only ask you to take it down, not demand.

This is too good a game to fade into the shadows!

Absolutely goooorgeous! This looks like one of the most beautiful games I've seen since Kyrandia. Did you do the art yourself or did you just tweak existing art?

Stop making me want a baby! ^_^ I might just have to run out onto the street and nick someone elses.

Hmm...!

The game looks neat, and your sprite looks good, I think, but I can't help but feel he needs a bit of ... pizazz. Just a little something to make him a bit more unique and noticable. A tad more personality.

Otherwise, it looks really good. I love games that start out in the thick of some mysterious trouble.

AGS Games in Production / Re:James Bond:

It does totally look like a game I would have played on my old Amiga (how I loved it so). By that I mean, it looks fantastic!

Which Bond is he based on? I just can't pick it...

Someone didn't recognise Hulk Hogan? Heathen! ^_^

Looks like a good game, I'm looking forward to seeing it completed. I always love games done in good ol' Sierra fashion.

Pff, you can't honestly expect people to be happy about you giving them important "Don't turn up" or "The time has changed" information by email. Even if you wake the person up, you have to call! Not everyone is connected to the internet 100% of the time with it sitting there on right next to their bed with a series of wacky and complicated contraptions designed to let you know the second en email from your boss comes in.

New Zealand Story - awesome XD

Anyone read this yet? It was the first I ever even heard of this movie. Actually, this thread is the second. Something that sounds so cool and I haven't seen any ads for it or anything over here. Maybe Australia takes to zombies badly...

I can't believe that a person that spreads this much hate and anger is a Moderator!

That's what happens when you're in charge of a lot of people, many of whom are undoubtedly fools and idiots. You become bitter and twisted and cynical, and a much more interesting person ^_^

i agree though, let's not forget why we're all here. For Sam and Max! Those poor defenseless animals...

You know what the problem is? Even if you know what time of day you were born, you have to take into account whether you're in a leap year, or one of the three years inbetween. Each year is roughly 365 and a QUARTER days. That quarter can screw you up ^_^ Even if you do that, you have to work out where in the leap year cycle you were on the year you were born.

It's so complicated! If you work it out once though, you can keep track of it forever. I just recently turned 21 and I was gonna work it out... then I couldn't be stuffed but I'd love to see someone else do it!

Btw, Happy birthday!

Congratulations! ^_^ I'm so not a baby person myself but I do love when other people have them (because it's the fun with no nappy changing or responsibility!).

By the way, good name choice. No Xerox's or other crazy crap names for you.

I'm sure having a baby is much more difficult than scripting in AGS - you can't just tell the baby to 'Stop running more commands' at night. We should start a new thread - Why AGS is easier than taking care of children.

I have to say that most internet speak drives me nuts. Lol especially, because it's often used, as Darth pointed out, in such a stupid way.

I'm guilty of writing 'btw' instead of 'by the way' all the time but I had a bit of a think about it and I think my problem is with abbreviations that, when expanded, wouldn't be naturally said anyway.

I mean, wouldn't it look extra stupid if someone said, "Wow, you're funny, laughing out loud!". I certainly think so. If I have to communicate my laughter, I just write "haha" or "hehehe!" or something. I think it sounds much more natural.

While we're on the subject, another pet hate on top of my list is people not bothering to properly type the thousands of exclamation points they use, eg. "omGLOL!!!11!!!!!!!!1111111"

If you must over-use exclamation points, how hard is it to keep your finger on the shift key for one second?

IMHO and btw, etc (and etc I guess!) don't really bother me because expanded into their normal form, they'd make sense in the conversation.

Oh, and ROFL is another one that's just as, if not more annoying than LOL.

As for how I read them in my head:

lol = L O L (I just pronounce the letters)
rofl = roffle
btw = by the way
imho = in my honest opinion
brb = B R B
j/k = Sometimes "joke", sometimes "just kidding"...
nOOb = noob

To be honest, I've -never- heard of 'stfu' before.

So impatient, OSC :P So was I, last night when I finished it. I was running around trying to get friends to play it all then and there. I was on a computer that didn't have an FTP program though, so there was nothing I could do about it.

Anyway, it's uploaded now and everyone who offered to test should have a private message letting them know where to get it.

Thanks everyone! ^_^

Game is now 100% complete ^_^ I'll upload later when I'm on a better computer.

Again, that solves the repeat problem, but it's not talking in background. I need all this to be non-blocking.

Scorpiorus' script works like a charm so I'm happy with that except for those two problems; wait and repeating the whole thing.

Beginners' Technical Questions / Re:Text width
Sun 21/03/2004 23:56:16
But isn't there a way to just set the text width for that character? Because DisplayTextAt works fine until you have to write a dialogue, and for a main character, it could be extremely frustrating to have to set the width individually for every response to every interaction etc.
#2560
That's fine for a normal conversation but not talking in the background.
