Anyone who doesn't mind can do it. The more people checking things out, the better.... I hope!

I've used the code Scorpius suggested, and it works fine except that I'd like to be able to have the speech in the background start over once it has finished (it's quite a few lines of speech).

Also, the Delay line doesn't seem to have any effect on the script at all. I can't get any kind of wait or delay between lines.

I'm another newcomer, I only discovered this place a little over 3 months ago. The first AGS game I played (knowing it was an AGS game) was Odysseus Kent (as soon as I saw the screenshot on the front page of this site, I -had- to have it). To this day, it's easily my favourite AGS game still and definitely inspired me to create my own game.

Admittedly, I haven't even come close to playing all the games available yet, but I do really love O.K. ^_^

This works -great-, thanks! This really helps me out.

I only have two queries.

When I use the delay like in your example, I get an error message saying "Type mismatch; string with non-string".

Also, is there a way I can get my script of background speech to start again from the beginning when it finishes?
#2565
Yep, it worked for me, too! Thanks a lot ^_^
#2566
Hey, no problem ^_^ Thanks for offering! I didn't think anyone would -want- to. I know I'm not looking forward to it, hehe.
#2567
You're in ^_^ I'll let you know when it's ready for download.

Is it looking like I may have to transfer my entire game over to a newer version? *death*

I'm using v2.6. I tried changing the view to something else and I got the same error with view 103.

I just tried starting in that room (as I did before, and it works fine) but then leaving the room, then re-entering ... it works fine. So it's not just the act of entering this room that's causing the error. It's something to do with playing the game normally up to this point that's causing some conflict. I can't think what, and the fact that view 103 causes the error too just gives me even less of an idea.

The problem with this is that this is one of the last rooms you enter in the whole game @_@ So it makes trying to find some sort of conflict -extremely- difficult.

EDIT: I just tried something else. I set the object view to 97 and loaded a saved game that cuts out a lot of the initial game, but is still way before this particular room is playable. This time when I entered the room, the room loaded (which was amazing in itself) and seemed to be working fine. After about 2 or 3 seconds, it quit and gave me a new error:
SetObjectView: You said 102, max is 99.

This is weird because I didn't say 102, I told it 97 (though I suspect that it was using a saved game that screwed that up), and also because the max number of views as far as I know it is 400! I'm starting to suspect that this is indeed a bug.

Well, I have some wonderful news for you all! Cirque de Zale is currently about 90% done and should be completed over the weekend. Thanks to many of life's little surprises and hurdles, I haven't been able to finish this game as quickly as I said. I'm sorry to anyone who burst into tears when March 15th came around and Cirque de Zale wasn't available anywhere, but that's just the way the cookie crumbles sometimes.

Like I said though, it should be finished over the weekend but OH NO! Don't get too excited - it has to be tested first! My slaves (whom I sometimes refer to as "friends") will probably get their asses into gear in about a week's time but if all goes well, this game should be available before the end of the month.

If anyone else would like to beta test for me, feel free!

Yep, I have a bit more than 101 views so far. Like Ghormak said, the spacing shouldn't make any difference however I -did- try it out of desperation anyway, and it did nothing.

By testing the room on it's own I mean making that room's number the starting room for my main character.

... I still have no idea what could be wrong so it's hard to know what more information I could give.

Advanced Technical Forum / SetObjectView error
Thu 18/03/2004 13:24:17
I have an object in a room that I want to animate. The object in this room is 0 and the view I want to give it is 101, so I have

SetObjectView (0, 101);

in the room's "before fadein" interaction editor.

This worked FINE when I tested the room on it's own but when I go through the game normally and get to the room, it crashes before the room loads with an error: SetObjectView - Invalid view number used.

I just can't make any sense of it, the view isn't used -anywhere- else in the game until this point.

Sorry if this is in the manual but for the life of me, I can't figure out how to get this done.

Basically, I have a character in the back of a room that I want to have talking, as if he's reading a speech over and over. I need this to be said in the background so it doesn't affect normal gameplay, and I need this character to stop speaking when the player talks to him. I then need him to start talking in the background again when the dialogue is over.

I tried using DisplaySpeechBackground but all the text appears at once and even then, I have the problem of repeating the "speech" over again once it's all finished. Plus, the character doesn't use the talking animation when this method is used.

Any ideas, anyone? Would the answer maybe involve creating a seperate text file with the engine accessing it and turning it into speech?

(I'm sorry to double-post but I originally posed this question in the "Lucasarts" thread and it hasn't ad a response yet. I would like to get this thing sorted fairly soon, especially seeing as I think it's probably got an incredibly simple answer so... yeah, I'm sorry. I'm just an impatient little thing ^_^)

I'm using the MI template. I have a cutscene that starts with an "use" action. The GUI disappears for awhile and then reappears later in the cutscene. The problem is that when the GUI is turned back on, the "use" action is still highlighted in the action bar.

Is there a way I can change the text in the action bar to the standard "walk to" before the GUI reappears? It looks very odd having it reappear so much later with the same old action still written there.

I'm watching it right now! ^_^

I missed the start and I didn't even know what I was watching until I came across this thread just now. These forums do everything!

QuoteAnother thing: I dont copy games, I buy the original. But most of you dont. You burn them on cd after Harry the hacker made a crack for it.
I think its hard to believe that everybody would BUY sam&max2.

That sounds really self righteousness. I'm sure plenty of people here pay for the games they really think deserve the support.

HAHAHA, you're saying that you only copy bad games and buy good games. HAHAHA
I know you copy the good games and don't even bother to copy bad games.
Say that I'm wrong and that you dont copy games if they're good.
Come on, lie to me.

I would lie to you, but I just can't. I'm not a PC gamer anymore, the last decade or so has turned me into a full on console gamer (and even there, we're only talking the good shit, which I send myself broke to pay for). PC games are just on the whole not worth buying or copying these days. I don't buy them, I don't copy them, UNLESS a really decent one comes out, in which case I'll buy it. This is so rare though, and a lot of the time I'm buying cheap old re-re-re-releases of games like MI, Lure of the Temptress etc. Grim Fandango was the last PC game I aquired but luckily for me, a wonderful friend of mine was nice enough to give it as a present. I would have paid anything for it though, once I discovered it. I'd even buy it again now if it would help the industry!

Let me buy Sam and Max 2, damn you world!

Most Game reporters are at least 25 years old. They are in an age categorie that doesnt buy games. The age categorie that does buy a lot of games are teenagers.
25 year old gamers have grown up with adventure games and know sam and max was a great game, while a 15 year old has not.
Also Game reporters are hardcore games. They can see the diffrence between overhyped crap and an original underdog game. But casual games just buy EA games. Electronic Arts is THE biggest publisher in the biz for a reazon, they play is safe. They only make games based on films/sports and a populair online game like Battlefield.
LA is playing it safe. Because casual gamers buy SW games.

All very true. Full of spelling and grammatical errors, but true. I don't think anyone is disputing it but your tone gives the impression that you think along the lines of "This is the way it is so shut up about it".

I think most people here would argue that while what you described is a perfect description of the way things are, that doesn't make it completely 'right'. By fighting about this issue so passionately (start playing the triumphant music, people!), I would hope that we're in some small way standing up for quality and creativity in gaming once more. That we're trying to change the industry just enough as to allow some real gems through the cracks and thusly, actually expose casual gamers to a higher standard of games. Maybe they'd then gain an interest in them and the market, instead of being shitty to cater to these innocent casual gamers, would be full of wonders and magic once more and everyone could come out winning.

To put it as bluntly as I can: I cannot criticize a company's decision to act according to what they deem right.

I just have to say this ^_^ remixor was right about that being a ludicrous statement. It may very well be true about you, but it's still pretty stupid. I'm not trying to make fun of you or anything, but... well here.

"I believe killing babies is ok." I can assure you I don't, but by your logic, you wouldn't criticize me for that belief. I believe I'm right, and so therefore, you won't give me any grief over my opinion/decision.

A company can be wrong, just like anyone. We may not be able to change their minds, but what's wrong with criticizing them for what we believe to be a terrible decision? If we don't criticize people when we believe they think the wrong thing, everyone will run around doing stupid things.

The fact that they "deemed it right" means nothing apart from the fact that maybe they weren't doing it out of evil malice for their fans. It still doesn't make their decision any better, and it doesn't mean they shouldn't learn from the experience. This is how good decisions are eventually made in life. One person says "blah", another person says "Bleah!" and they argue/debate until they come to a happy medium.
