General Discussion / Re: Chrome!
Wed 03/09/2008 12:47:12
I've been using it all day and I'm surprisingly happy with it. I normally don't test new things like this, but I'm really glad I did. All my browsing today has been zippier and neater than usual.

Surely, at some point, I will find the HORRIBLE FLAW that will make me hate it.

You can never have too many web browsers, it's great that now we'll have to start testing websites on yet another one...

This was my first thought too. Yay.

However, wouldn't it be wonderful if it somehow managed to get rid of, say, Internet Explorer?

Yes, I did realise after trying it out, which is why I started looking into AS3.0 tips and how I might alter the existing code.

Does anyone know of any half decent tutorials for beginning with AS3.0? Not changing from 2 -> 3, but beginning with 3.0.

General Discussion / Re: BDSM = happiness!
Thu 28/08/2008 04:15:35
It's all fairly unsurprising and makes perfect sense, when you think about it.

There are no absolutes here, but it does make sense that it would often seem that gay people tend to be happier and less stressed than straight people in the same way that people who enjoy BDSM or people who have very healthy, open sexual relationships seem happier overall.

Because people like this are on the whole a lot more honest and comfortable with sex, and themselves, and of course this leads to having less stress and just being generally happier in life than people who are leading lives where perhaps they aren't satisfied sexually or aren't comfortable with sex, or aren't comfortable with themselves and their desires.

I mean, there are many ways to look at it and these are generalisations. I'm not saying you have to be gay or into BDSM to be happy! I'm not saying people who aren't into things like that aren't happy. But speaking generally, it just makes sense. And this doesn't just apply to sex, of course, but also just attitudes that have to do with relationships and love and whatnot. Generally, people will tend to be happier the more they learn to accept about life and the way people are, and of course, this applies to themselves and their partners too.

When I HAVE a sex life, it's a pretty gosh darn good one! And I'm a pretty laid back person in part because of that. Many years ago, I would get hung up on the way other people were far more, as if their existance somehow offended my own. When you learn over time to let go of that and learn about people more and become both more aware and accepting of things in general, it's a wonderfully freeing feeling.

Oh, now I'm conflicted. I've heard a lot of people complaining about 3.0.

See if you can help me out here then - my major problem right now is that I've been following this tutorial here: http://mikestickney.com/wordpress/flash-tutorial-character-movement-with-arrow-keys/

And everything has gone smoothly until it came to adding the code into the movie clip's action panel. From what I can gather, I need (with 3.0) to add the code into my main timeline in an 'actions' layer, but I need to change the code to indicate what I want it to act on.

But I'm not sure how to change it. Also, even that "stop()" code doesn't seem to work. Same deal?

Anyway, sorry! I'm not going to turn this thread into my tech support, but if anyone could help me out, I'd appreciate it. It'd be a nice hump to get over to just see this working.

I don't know what is you main reason for developing an adventure in Flash. Is it to get experienced in Flash programming or just to make an adventure?

I'm asking, because there is an adventure engine for Flash.

I'm not making an adventure game! I just... like this forum :(

I do have plenty of reasons for wanting to develop this in Flash though. It's not an adventure game being one of them.

Hmm, thanks guys!

Actually, I'd been looking at those tutorials all day, and while they had been somewhat helpful, they can also be frustrating as well because they are just snapshots of explanations. Something like the AGS manual was FAR more helpful. But I have been learning by doing and I've already picked up quite a lot. I went from, "WHAT THE HELL DOES THIS PROGRAM DO?!?" to a more mild frustration at not being able to enter in code but coupled with a basic understanding.

I had been wondering if I should just use 2.0 and now that you've suggested it, I think I shall. I wasn't sure how much of a problem it would be but it certainly seems that, given how new 3.0 is, it should be fine. It certainly makes a LOT more sense to me.

As for the physics... well, early days yet, but that's why I'm learning it. Also, I'm hoping to see how far I can use engines and code other people have already created. Anyway, we shall see.

Thanks!

Well, it's going to be a very simple game in theory. I have no idea how to answer really, it's going to involve coding and animation... because it's a game! Gosh, I dunno. It's a game. So I guess coding is the main focus.

I will need to make use of some basic sorts of physics though, velocity and acceleration, etc. And if you can imagine in the style on Line Rider, I'd like to make a kind of user-input based platform creation, where the player is essentially drawing lines and they become platforms.

I mean, I'd like to learn the basics of Flash obviously before I go delving into this but this is the ultimate goal.

EDIT: At this stage, I have Flash CS3 Professional and I've been reading and watching tutorials all night. I'm having trouble because they've made a lot of very unituitive changes to the code in ActionScript 3 and most of the tutorials for coding deal with ActionScript 2. I'm sure they have their reasons for doing so, but it makes it VERY DIFFICULT for people just learning.

So if anyone has any good tips or knows any good game-centered tutorials (or just doing very beginner things in Flash!) dealing specifically with ActionScript 3, that'd be great.

I actually have a little game I'd like to develop using Flash. But I've never used it before!

Can anyone here recommend a good place to learn how to program with Flash? Any tips?

Congrats!

The reviews ARE highly subjective and that's exactly what I like about them.

I've only played the first and second place entries so far, because I CAN'T STOP PLAYING "Go Beryllium"! DAMN, this game is fun and addictive. and I suck badly at it.

Completed Game Announcements / Re: Nanobots
Thu 24/07/2008 13:49:15
Hey, I've just started playing this - very nice! I'm really enjoying the atmosphere of the game, and how colourful it is. The music is really lovely too.

I've just run into a little bug I thought I'd mention. I've really just started and I've only done a couple of things. I tried to get Brainbot to analyze the red/green button thing on the left wall, and the text appears for only a fraction of a second.

EDIT: But it didn't do it again when I reopened the game, so who knows!

EDIT: I just finished the game. It was really well done!

Spoiler
For starters, any game with rainbow as a theme is going to get a thumbs up from me. I liked that it was all contained within more-or-less one room. The nanobots had very cute little characters and enjoyed the puzzles. I liked being able to finish a game because it's short enough and not obtuse-enough that I can solve all (but one!) of the puzzles just by thinking about it.

The puzzle I had to look up hints for was the gumball thing. I was so sure I had to catch it that it didn't occur to me to consider doing something else.

Nice touch on the ending too! I had fun playing that little mini-game.

General Discussion / What is this song?
Thu 17/07/2008 15:16:47
It's another one of those threads!

A few months ago when I was still in Japan, I was in some shop and a really good song came on. It was in English, a male singer, mostly guitar-ey. The lyrics in the chorus went something like, "Love is never as good as you think it's gonna be". Perhaps not exactly, but more or less that.

I'm afraid I don't have much else to go by. I've tried googling various things but I can't find a trace of this song, and noone seems to have heard of it.

Any ideas?

Can anyone recommend some good free CD/DVD burning software?

Sorry, I know this is all I ask these days. I can't help it - you guys are so GOOD at this.

Hey, CON-freaking-GRADULATIONS! :D That's fantastic, I'm so happy for you.

I'm using Vista, I'm afraid, and:

The HD version in Premium and Ultimate editions of Windows Vista adds support for capturing from HDV camcorders. The capture wizard will create DVR-MS type files from HDV tapes. However, the Windows Vista version of Windows Movie Maker no longer supports importing video from an analog video source such as a VCR or from a webcam.

Okay, I'm thinking of getting one of the big programs soon enough but for a very quick project I want to do...

Is there a free editor which allows me to:

- Record from webcam
- Add music
- Double the speed of the video
- Output as AVI or something that youtube will accept.

Very specific I know! I have a thing I'd like to do today or tomorrow.
