Oh really, you can get rid of it that easily? :P It's just due to the fact that we had to restrict access to cirque.zip, and you can't do that without restricting all *.zip files, so...

Well, this is only a demo-demo anyway. It's not that important.
#982
Okay, it seems because of file protection and whatnot, you guys are gonna have to go here to get the file: http://kinoko.futariba.com/misc/aldora.html

Dargh!!!

Please redownload the file, Vince ;_; I'm sorry, I had the game starting from the wrong part! Everyone missed the intro.

Would it be possible to get an increase in the number of walk behinds for each room? In some of my bigger rooms, this is really hard to work around.
#985
Yeah, god damnit! (Thanks Snarky ^_^)

Anyway, just because I haven't made a game, in your opinion, as good as that, I'm not allowed to say I don't like the graphics?

The ooooold "You can't have a bad opinion of something unless you can replicate or improve upon the quality" argument, eh?
#986
Trust me, that isn't funny, it's me being a lazy, not bothering to remember, kinda fucking around a little bit and also just that I've been working on other things for so long. I can't remember what code I used for this or that ages ago, I can't even remember exactly what the story in certain parts of the game is, but I can remember the exact code I wrote last night.

Vince: I've uh, told you twice already ^_^ TAB key

I'm not following the disussion but I'm happy the words 'Stupid, stupid RPG Maker' are still visible somewhere on the internet.

(*ahem* Re: Tilesets, people who don't wanna put the time in to make their own graphics shouldn't be making RPGs and posting them on the net)

As you warned, there were a few bugs here and there (it may have been my crappy laptop keyboard, but the diagonal-down movement wasn't working;

Ah, this is almost certainly to do with the key combination and your particular keyboard. Some keyboards can't take certain combinations of keys. Up-left never worked on my computer back home but it's fine on my lap top. This is partly why you have the option to change the keys using the TAB button (or before you start a game).

Quotethe reporter spat out a random "H" at one point; and I managed to imbed myself in a wall once and had to restart), but you replicated the old-school feeling really well.
Ã,

Ah yeah, some things I forgot to shoddily patch up before zipping the game up. Whoops!

QuoteVery nice!Ã,  One thing bugs me about the old-school formula though.Ã,  Why make the A button the "run" button?Ã,  Why not make it the "walk" button.Ã,  Walking is painfully slow, so people will play 98% of the game holding the A button to run and only let go when they need to be very deliberate about where they're standing.Ã,  Why not let run be the default so we only have to play 2% of the game while holding down the A button?

I see your point, and I agree... but in the spirit of not trying anything new, I'm gonna keep it like the old school games and have you hold the button down all the time to run. I don't know, I kinda like always having a button pressed down. Makes me feel like I'm always working :P

QuoteAlso, I thought the keyboard layout should be tweaked a bit...
How so? I mean... you can already set your own keys... do you mean the default should be changed or you should be able to change something you currently can't?

Quote-Using reporters to save.Ã,  (Will there be a random reporter standing at the entrance to Evil Boss' lair trying to get the scoop on the final battle?)

Uhhh... you'll see ^_^ But yes, he will be popping up somewhat frequently.

Thanks for that!! It's so nice to get some feedback... ANYTHING is welcome by anyone.

Nope, I don't mind! I don't know what the problem is though but I'll check it out when I get home.

The big problem here is people associating these holidays with religion. Anyone doing that - it:s YOUR fault.

Christmas isn't about christianity - it's about rum balls and turkey and loved ones and PRESENTS and decorations and getting pissed on seasonal alcohol! BBQs and overeating and your stupid neices and nephews making noise with their stupid loud toys and getting drunk and terrible xmas TV and being disappointed with your gifts and prawn cocktails and pavlova and that thing my nanna only makes at xmas (but not for much longer cause she's bloody getting on now so it won't be much longer before she dies) and playing all your new computer games.

That's what christmas is.

Easter is simple - holidays and chocolate. Chocolate, chocolate, chocolate. Getting less of it every year you get older until it barely matters anymore. The price of easter eggs going up and up to the point where you ask people not to get you eggs and bunnies, just bars of Cadbury bought when they're on special. Wanting TONNES of it but getting sick of it after one. Realising you don't want any until after breakfast and lunch anymore (unlike being a kid when you wanted to cram it all into your face at 6am). Stupid Easter TV. Wanting Easter to be over so you can go to the discount stores and get all the left overs at a super low price, but not even that happens anymore because they know everyone does that.

Halloween? Ah who cares, it's an American holiday ^_^

(but! It's about halloween parties, kids trick or treating, carving pumpkins like your favourite pop culture characters and dressing up)

I don't know why the link isn't working for you, there's nothing wrong with it. Works fine for me and everyone else.

Er... try again, maybe?
#992
I did about 60% of them 5 minutes before uploading so... perhaps not. But... perhaps! I don't know.
#993
Sorry, I took it down to fix a rather largish bug. It's back up now :) Sorry!

Righteo, here we go: http://kinoko.futariba.com/misc/giftofaldora.zip

This isn't a proper demo, just a little buggy taste of more to come. As I said before, you can see the beginnings of the beginning here, but there are no cut scenes yet so you'll just start randomly in the own and you can wander around.

I chopped a lot of features out that weren't working properly, so just about NOTHING is the way it will be when it's done. The text boxes, the running engine, the music during the opening "story"... believe me, this is an incomplete skeleton.

There'll no doubt be lots of bugs and glitches but bear with me. The theme music, by the way, was whipped up in an amazingly short time by modgeulator, so HUGE THANKS for that!

Okay, because I'm too lazy to make a text file to go along with it...

Enter = START
Shift = SELECT
X = Do stuff/talk
Z = Cancel
A = Run (hold down to run when walking)
S = GUI/Menu
D = Display
C = ... I can't even remember. Something

You can change the keys with TAB. To quit, still use CTRL + Q and then press Enter.

Oh, also, you cant use magic or anything, and a lot of the items probably don't work at all. In fact, there's a significant lack of sound effects/visual effects. Like I said, bare bones.

Anyway... Gift of Aldora! Hurrah!

Speaking of me...  sorry! I went on holiday ^_^ Yamanashi-ken to see my friends in Fujiyoshida, right smack next to Mt Fuji! So, anyway, I wasnt around for the opening of this thread *sniff*

Anyway, everyone did a great job! I'm so, utterly impressed with everyone's entries!

I didn't get my demo finished in time, unfortunately. I had too many unresolved scripting problems and not enough time to get all the coding done.

But in the spirit of Release Something, I'm gonna give you all that I have anyway. It's buggy, it's incomlete, it's not an official demo yet but heck, you can start it up and see the intro so far and have a run around. I'll go away ad just 'ready' the file now. Uh, I'll be back.

Hehehe! 'Cept my kids don't call me that, so you deserve the title ^_-
#997
No, not at all. I just want the text to be typed on the correct line it fits on. Currently, as it's being "typed out", when the word gets too long it jumps to the next line, which looks somewhat untidy.

'x' is simply the button that removes the text window. No other function.
#998
Sorry to only get back to this now. Had to put this problem aside for a bit to focus on other things.

Anyway, I put that line in and the message displayed fine. If I then press 'x' (as defined by keyx), it disappears and reappears for only a fraction of a second at the top of the screen.

However, if instead of pressing 'x', I press any other key, the test message disappears and another box appears with only the first letter of the message displayed. Then, I can only press 'x' again to get rid of it, and again, the full message appears at the top of the screen for only a moment.

'keyx' is defined at the start of my game as uh, they key 'x' (but the player can change this which is why I used a variable)

I'm almost half expecting in a decade or so to be watching the TV when a Current Affair comes on with a story about the heartless, weirdo family that kept hundreds of animals in their stinky, run-down ranch... all in little red and white plastic balls.

I just find it -bizarre- that you refer to it as a `craze`, as if it's temporary. Well, I find everything you've said so far about console gaming bizarre. Sure, it annoys you and you were just stating it... it's just... strange, really. Console gaming encompasses every kind/genre of gaming, and all consoles have their own style. If you think console games require less thinking than PC games, you must be thinking of them all as kiddy platformers or something. Not just the games themselves but the controls can be very complex!

I won't get into it though, it's been handled already ^_^

What annoys me with gaming... the majority of consumers being clueless about gaming. I know it's the way of the world that as games become more popular, they also gain a wider audience of people that care less about them, but I look fondly back on the days when the only people who played games were people that really liked playing games.

Also, the shit little kids play. You look at any Top Ten list for consoles/hand helds like the GBA and it's almost entirely Pokemon. I look at my little nieces playing games and I can't help think, `It's your fault I have to look so hard to find anything decent to play.`

I wish people cared more about making genuinely good games.
