What is MAGS?
MAGS is a monthly competition for all amateur adventure game makers. The idea is to use AGS to create a game in under a month, following the rules set by the previous winner.

For more information please visit the Official MAGS website.

Why should I enter MAGS?
We're not here to tell you that you should enter MAGS, but merely allow it as a creative opportunity to help you work to a deadline, improve your skills, and generally as a good kick-start for the new comers (a.k.a n00bies).

MAGS is the perfect opportunity to make a game, and the wonderful prize is to announce the next month's rules, and all competitors get the game placed on the MAGS website.

MAGS is meant to be fun and is aimed at everyone, despite their skill. If you have poor art skills work on graphics, and vice-versa, as the voting is based on "favourite" games, and not the most artistic, you may get help for the competiton, but should try not get anyone else to do any part of the game for you.

You are not allowed to (re)use material already created before this competition, you game must be completely new! An exception goes for sounds and music where you can also use free material that is available to the public.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This month's guidelines are set by last month's winner ThatOneChick87:

Topic: Parody

You must parody at least one Television or Film cast. The characters, not the actors.

- The game must take place on Thanksgiving Day (or any other Holiday that involves extended family coming to visit).
- At least one character must bring a weird date.
- The player character must do at least one thing that's out of character for him/her.
- A tooth must be in the inventory at least once.

That's it - no further restrictions.

Please credit the original cast to avoid copyright issues... :)

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

All games need to be in by November 27th, 12h GMT.

Please post a download link of your game entry to this thread, best with a screenshot. Thanks and good luck.

This month's guidelines are set by paolo and Ben304 and they left them fairly open so you can use your imagination:

Topic: Planes, Trains and Automobiles

1. Planes, trains and automobiles: the main character must take each of these three forms of transport at least once during the course of the game.

2. The character must undergo some sort of metamorphosis or change during the game, such as growing up, gaining a new ability or perhaps going from good to bad or bad to good.

That's it - no other requirements.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

All games need to be in by October 26th.

This month's guidelines are set by Akatosh.

Topic: Innovation

If there's one thing that's definitely been over-done in AGS adventure game creation it's the standard "You Play As The Completely Inept Private Eye XYZ" adventures, Indy and Monkey Island clones. It's probably time for a change and shake things up a little!

Thus if you want to make a game for this month's MAGS competition it must follow these guidelines:

- The main character must not currently be, have ever been or trying to get become a pirate, private eye or archaeologist.

- The game must be placed in an "infrequently used in AGS games" setting. This means use locations we didn't see in a long time (for example a Cyberpunk environment would classify) or use places is a non-standard way...

- In addition to this the game must feature something that'll be considered "innovative", e.g. a new and interesting GUI (Odo Tamat On did this) or in general something you don't see in every game. Don't get stuck on this rule: It doesn't have to be a GUI or completely new, but it shouldn't have been "done to death". Just a nice feature.

That's it. The rules are quite open this month, not including a definite background setting or anything, but that's pretty much the spirit of innovation, isn't it?

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

All games need to be in by September 25th.

This month's guidelines are set by munchiez, winner of the last month's competition.

Topic: Desert Island

- The game should be set on a desert island. There can be other characters on it if you like, but try to keep an impression of the island being quite desolate.

- There must be a character (player or non-player) based on an inanimate object. Whether it can talk or not is up to you.
Examples:
Wilson (volleyball) from Castaway
Milky Joe (coconut on a stick) from The Mighty Boosh.

- One puzzle must involve a seagull or a shark (or both!).

That's it. No further restrictions.

Topic: Fun Fair

- The game must take place at a fun fair/carnaval

- There must be a ride called "Zipper" (it's ok if it is broken)

- One puzzle must involve a glass of beer or a 30cm bratwurst

No further restrictions.

Topic: The Birds

From time to time we have a ruleset based on animals. Now this also goes for this contest. The storyline is completely up to you but

- the main character must be a bird of some sort
- the movie "The Birds" by Alfred Hitchcock must be an inventory item (may it be on a video tape, a film reel, a poster, ...)
- there must also be a plane involved somewhere

That's all - no further restrictions.

This month's guidelines are set by zabnat, winner of the last month's competition.

Topic: Fairy Tale Mod

- Main story or a side plot has to be a modified classic fairy tale. That is some classic fairy tale (Cinderella, little red riding hood, Grimm's fairy tales, etc.) and alter it someway (like modernize the setting, ...), but it still has to be recognizable. Think of three bears cottage in Simon the Sorcerer 2.
- One inventory item must be a regognizable item from a different fairy tale than the one featured in the plot. Like Cinderella's shoe or the poisoned apple from Snow White.
- A yellow submarine must be included in the game somehow. It can be a location, on the background, as a hotspot, as an object or as an inventory item, it's up to you to decide.

Of course you can mix as many fairy tales as you wish, minimum is two (according to the rules above). There are no further restrictions.

All games need to be in by May 26th.

Some additional words in general: During the latest contests a number of entries were obviously created in a hurry, in just some hours or some days. Remember that this is neither OWOG (one week, one game) nor is it SHOG (seven hours, one game) - it is MAGS. So please use the given time to create your game, you have almost a whole month! Dont get me wrong: There's nothing against well tested short games and nothing against slightly buggy epic entries. Just don't rush and remember it is MAGS! Thanks :)

This month's guidelines are set by Gamer_V, winner of the last month's competition. These rules go for the unexpected. This doesn't mean that your game has to be weird - you can also make a logical story out of this! A challenging contest...

Topic: Unexpected

- The first line must be "I wish I was a lettuce" (other plants are also okay and/or you can play with the word)
- The game needs to have an confusing menu/console screen (which means it shouldn't be too obvious how it works)
- At least one conversation with a character must make no sense at all to the player
- One inventory item must be something abstract (= love, greed, world peace, etc.)
- The ending needs to be confusing and unexpected to the story

That's it. No other restrictions.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

All games need to be in by April 26th.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

These rules are kind of a mix out of the suggestions of the previous winners Akatosh and FSi. Hoping for some creative entries...

Topic: Gone forever?

The game should proof that "something" is actually gone forever or still exists. The definition of "something" is up to you. For example think of aliens, of special communities in history, of vinyl discs, ... there is a lot of things you could come up with. As said these are just examples! You can also go for "something" different. People are also allowed (think of Elvis).

Each entry must:
- feature the former existance in a cutscene at the beginning of the game (maybe a flashback of earlier times, ...).
- make use of an inventory item that is related to that "something" (eg. extraterrestrial plant for aliens, blue suede shoes for Elvis, ... - be creative).
- have at least 3 different locations. Many rooms in one house and the garden of that house would still be one location! So they really need to be completely different.

At least one of these sentences should show up in a dialog:
- "No, we have no bananas!"
- "Vodka? Better have some juice!"
- "Hey, this is not about religion!"

That's it. No other restrictions.

Topic: A Valentine Nightmare

There is always this special day in February and in this contest we take it as a topic but it's up to you how it all turns out...

In each entry
- there must be an "escape the room" puzzle
- the player must change clothes (at least once)

and the following items (not necessarily inventory items) need to be included
- a Valentine gift (that ultimately gets delivered)
- a flying bird

That's it. No other restrictions.

All games need to be in by February 24th.

Topic: Anxious Pet

This month's rules are a mix of Culun-dog's ideas and some suggestions from Akatosh.

- Your main character must be an anxious pet (dog, cat, ... any domesticated animal will do). The pet is anxious and only trusts one person - it's owner. The pet can not talk (of course) but bark, miaow, ...
- The game must contain at least 3 non-playable characters and
- it must be visible that the pet is anxious of them by showing this in interactions (maybe in puzzles) involving these characters.
- The pet must be sent on a mission by its owner (eg. send love letter to owner's flame, save owner's life, ...)

These are quite detailed information concerning the player character but the rest is up to you. Think of a nice story that fits these rules. There are no further restrictions.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

All games need to be in by early January 27th.

You remember the MAGS competitions in 2006? All together 31 games entered the contests and offered a great range of amusement, humour and entertainment. To celebrate all the contestants and to bring all those games back to your minds and on your screens again here's "Maggies".

We don't want to judge about best graphics, best character or other best categories - there's already a famous award for doing this. "Maggies" just wants to know what's your favourite MAGS game 2006. It's up to you to decide what's most important: Graphics, gameplay, idea, interpretation of the MAGS rules, whatever...

The voting period will run two long weeks until January 17th.
Take your time to play all the games and decide in the end...

For voting please visit the MAGS site or make your choice right here:

Topic: Together

December is a month of festivities as well as sharing those moments with family and friends. Yet in most adventure games the protagonist is alone. Well, not this month!

For this MAGS the game must have two controllable characters (or if you wish even more) and some way of switching between them. Each of these character should have some kind of skill, ability or physical trait that the others do not. Optionally, if you want, you can have them exchange inventory items, react differently to hotspots, or have puzzles that can only be solved by a certain character. Examples of this kind of design include Maniac Mansion and Gobliins 2.

Second, choose a festival that takes place in December, such as Christmas, New Year's Eve, the Solstice or Hogswatch Night (and so forth). This festival must be visible in (at least) one of the rooms, and two of the inventory items must be related to this festival.

No further restrictions.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Since this can be a busy month with all sorts of meetings and events (and as it is possible because of the quick final of the November contest) we're starting pretty early this time but all entries need to be in by late December 26th. Happy holidays!

Please post a download link of your game entry to this thread, best with a screenshot. Thanks and good luck.

Topic: Time Travel

Ever heard about traveling in time? Probably. Is it possible? Who knows... And why should it be done..?
This month it's up to you to create an adventure game based on this topic.

You have to
- let your player character travel in time
but it's up to you to decide from when to when, if he travels 10 minutes back into the past or 10 decades into the future, if he starts in 3033 or in 210 B.C., you can make him travel any distances, in any directions and with any devices (e.g. a usual time machine, a magic spell, a wormhole ... whatever)
- involve following inventory items:
a thing to cook meals, a thing to make light and a thing to wear
- have at least one scrolling room
- one non-human being or thing to talk to

You can have (but it's not so important to have it, since the time might be too short to script this)
- mutliple characters in different times, who change something in their time and so have effects in the other

No further restrictions.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

All entries need to be in by early November 27th.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Prepare yourself for Halloween: This month's competition is going creepy - if you want to. It's possible to enter with a spooky game as well as with a more realistic one.

Topic: Haunted House

Your game must feature
- a haunted old house of course
- a private investigator
- someone stuck in the house trying to escape

At least one of these persons must be the main character! A nice feature (but not a must) would be, if the player could switch between these characters. But this is just a proposal.

Three essential items must appear in some way
- a talking picture
- a pumpkin
- a broom

No further restrictions.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

All entries need to be in by October 26th.

Please post a download link of your game entry to this thread, best with a screenshot. Thanks and good luck.

What is MAGS?
MAGS is a monthly competition for all amateur adventure game makers. The idea is to use AGS to create a game in under a month, following the rules set by the previous winner.

For more information please visit the Official MAGS Website

You are not allowed to (re)use material that you already created before this competition, you game must be completely new!

As Mikko didn't replay in a while this month's guidelines are set by FSi, the second winner of last month's competition.
You fear or love the old adventure games of the "early days"..? So this time we go for some elements that were typical in those games.

Topic: Retroparanoia

The game MUST:
- only make use of the first 16 "default" colours (CGA) and/or shades of grey (whole spectrum).
- include world conspiracy.
- have at least 5 items from the "Things that haven't been inventory items yet" list.

If you think this is not enough of a challenge here's some more nice "have to"'s, but they are OPTIONAL:
- The game could start on a small island in Barents Sea.
- The hero might be beheaded (have his/her head chopped off) at the end of the game.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

All entries need to be in by September 26th.

Please post a download link of your game entry to this thread, best with a screenshot. Thanks and good luck.

At first sight this month's guidelines, set by JetXL, seem to be very strict but they offer countless ways on how your game idea may develop:

Topic: Emerald

1. The intro should be black & white. (Whether this is a dream sequence or not, or only b&w in the intro is up to the maker)
2. The intro displays a murder. (This can be comedic or not)
3. The murder victim last words or message has to be "Emerald".
4. The murder weapon must later be an inventory item in the game.
5. The maker has to explain why the victim's last words or message was "Emerald" within the story.
6: The main character must have an addiction. (Can be candy, cocaine or otherwise)

Sounds very cineastic you say? A déjà -vu? Maybe :) Give it a try but it has to be a game, not a movie. There are no other restrictions.

Oh, there's something special ...
Exactly 5 years ago, in June 2001, DGMacphee invented MAGS and started the very first monthly AGS competition.
Since its launch 55 contests followed up and about 150 games were created for these competitions.
So this month is the right time to celebrate MAGS with a very special event: The MAGS anniversary contest!

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

What we already know ...
MAGS is a monthly competition for all amateur adventure game makers. The idea is to use AGS to create a game in under a month, following given rules. For more information please visit the Official MAGS Website

Why should I enter MAGS?
We're not here to tell you that you should enter MAGS, but merely allow it as a creative opportunity to help you work to a deadline, improve your skills, and generally as a good kick-start for the new comers (a.k.a n00bies).
MAGS is the perfect opportunity to make a game, and all competitiors get the game placed on the MAGS website.
MAGS is meant to be fun and is aimed at everyone, despite their skill. If you have poor art skills work on graphics, and vice-versa, as the voting is based on "favourite" games, and not the most artistic, you may get help for the competiton, but should try not get anyone else to do any part of the game for you.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

As this is a special competition there's also something special to the rules ...
This month you can pick any topic of the previous MAGS competitions!

You find them all in the history section of the MAGS Website (click "see guidelines" for details about each topic).
So you have the choice from 56 guidelines and I guess you all will find a topic that you like :)

You are not allowed to (re)use material that you already created before this competition, you game must be completely new!

A special competition, special rules and a special prize ...
This month the winner won't set the next topic, the prize this month is this unique "BigBlueCup" CD with almost all MAGS games of the last 5 years. It includes many games that are no longer available on the net and also all winning ceremonies ever made for MAGS.

And also something special about the deadline ...
This time you actually have the complete month, 30 days, to create your game! So all entries need to be in by late June 30th.

Please post a download link of your game entry to this thread, add the topic of the game (eg. 2006-05 The Journey) to your post and also publish a screenshot of the game, please.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Finally I want to thank the previous MAGS hosts DGMacphee and Magintz for their work and also thank all competitors of the last 5 years for wonderful games and great entertainment. Thanks!

I hope there will be a lot of entries this time. Good luck to all who join this MAGS anniversary contest!
