Ladies and gentlemen, we're reaching the end... Please submit you entries within the next 24 hours from now (see timestamp of this post). Then the voting will begin.

For your current setup you probably need to use Javascript as Peder suggested.
I guess this is what you're looking for:

Code: ags

<html>
  <head>
    <script language="JavaScript" type="text/javascript">
<!--
      function newcont(suburl, conturl)
      {
        document.getElementById("submenu").src=suburl;
        document.getElementById("content").src=conturl;
      }
//-->
      </script>
  </head>
  <body>
    <a href="javascript:newcont('subA.htm','contA.htm');">Change to A</a>
    <a href="javascript:newcont('subB.htm','contB.htm');">Change to B</a>
    <br />
    <iframe src="default_submenu.htm" id="submenu" name="submenu"></iframe>
    <iframe src="default_content.htm" id="content" name="content"></iframe>
  </body>
</html>

Be aware that Javascript codes (as well as iframes) do not work on all browsers. But for most of your visitors it shouldn't be a problem at all.

Using current techniques you should put it all (menu/submenu/content) in just one page, maybe using AJAX to change the content. But this is another topic and better start it small... Good luck for your site!

How about an old haunted inn? as in a medieval inn?
Sure, from my point of view an inn is a house :)

Must the hounted house be a "house"? Can't it be a flat, or a tent, or a caravan, or something?
Well it should be more the standard house thing. A flat might be okay as well but your other ideas are rather "unusual" places to live. Of course some people/cultures do so, but better go for what we're used to call a house :)

Ah great: E-mail notification seems to be working again - at least for the moment. Thanks.

As I'm planning on entering, I have a question: With "three essential items" do you necessarily mean _inventory_ items?
No, the items may appear wherever you want. They can be useful (as inventory items) but do not necessarily have to be - they only need to be in the game.

Is it always ok to use sprites/backgrounds/sounds etc. found on the net ???

The answer is given in the ruleset:

You are not allowed to (re)use material already created before this competition, you game must be completely new! An exception goes for sounds and music where you can also use free material that is available to the public.

So this includes premade graphics. As people have most problems in creating own sounds and music this is the only exception. Only if the rules ask for premade graphics or formally allow free sources they are allowed, but it's not the case here.

Hm... As I can not find this issue being mentioned here in this thread so far: It seems as if e-mail notification does no longer work. I neither receive PMs nor info e-mails about new posts. Just checked the settings in the profile (correct) and the mail account (running fine). So I guess it's something to report here :)

I can enter with this right?

Yes, sure :) You know it's just that people shouldn't work longer than one month on a game. "Already started" could also mean "I'm working on this since 3 months now". All in all it should be one person working for one month on one game - just as always. I only wanted to make this clear again, so don't worry. Everything's okay. :) Good luck!

ah perfect. Count me in! This rules match very nicely with a game I already started  :D

:o I'm not quite sure if you really wrote what I read as ...

I guess you actually wanted to say "the rules fit an idea that is going around you mind since a long time", right?  ;)

What is MAGS?
MAGS is a monthly competition for all amateur adventure game makers. The idea is to use AGS to create a game in under a month, following the rules set by the previous winner.

For more information please visit the Official MAGS Website

Why should I enter MAGS?
We're not here to tell you that you should enter MAGS, but merely allow it as a creative opportunity to help you work to a deadline, improve your skills, and generally as a good kick-start for the new comers (a.k.a n00bies).

MAGS is the perfect opportunity to make a game, and the wonderful prize is to announce the next month's rules, and all competitors get the game placed on the MAGS website.

MAGS is meant to be fun and is aimed at everyone, despite their skill. If you have poor art skills work on graphics, and vice-versa, as the voting is based on "favourite" games, and not the most artistic, you may get help for the competiton, but should try not get anyone else to do any part of the game for you.

You are not allowed to (re)use material already created before this competition, you game must be completely new! An exception goes for sounds and music where you can also use free material that is available to the public.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Prepare yourself for Halloween: This month's competition is going creepy - if you want to. It's possible to enter with a spooky game as well as with a more realistic one.

Topic: Haunted House

Your game must feature
- a haunted old house of course
- a private investigator
- someone stuck in the house trying to escape

At least one of these persons must be the main character! A nice feature (but not a must) would be, if the player could switch between these characters. But this is just a proposal.

Three essential items must appear in some way
- a talking picture
- a pumpkin
- a broom

No further restrictions.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

All entries need to be in by October 26th.

Please post a download link of your game entry to this thread, best with a screenshot. Thanks and good luck.

Time for voting has come to its end. The latest discussions here already show who might be the winner but does it equal what people voted for..?

Yet another time one clear winner was selected. About 66% of all votes went to
Don Spillacys Conspiracy Quest

Congratulations to charliechuck and also many thanks to the other participants for their entries.
#193
Okay, no more entries - so here we go... For voting please visit the MAGS site or make your choice right here:

Zeke And The Island Of Barentsev (Demo) by Buckethead
RON Sixteen by FSi
Don Spillacys Conspiracy Quest by charliechuck

Please vote only once and be sure to have played all games before sending your voice! Good luck to all participants.

For the time of voting now you're invited to post your opinion about all entries: Pros and cons of the games. What did you like, what not. In this case it's interesting how you compare the games - if this is possible at all.
#194
So the final day is reached. If you want to enter please submit your game within the next 17 hours (see timestamp of this post). Then the voting will begin!

do you know how long it takes from when you add your game to when it appears on the AGS database?
Erenan already told you all about it (thanks). Do you have a place where to store your game then? There's a number of services out there and you can also check this thread.

Is it Ok (and with ok , i mean does it count as an entry) if I post it here anyway? It has 16 colors but only 1 of the 5 needed inventory items.
Hm... Of course you can post it here and it will also be listed on the MAGS site then but as it doesn't fit the guidelines there might be a problem in counting it as a full entry. Last month's winner was a demo too but it had all required elements in it.
Okay now: It's fair enough that you're telling us that the game will not be complete and won't fit all of the guidelines. So when it comes to voting let's make this clear again and may the voters decide then... Okay!? This question goes to all of you :)

I'm not using RON sprites (they won't fit in the rules, right?), I'm just wanted to use Mika, but paint her from scratch
Ah! In that case I see no problems at all... Good luck :)

Can I still enter?
September 26th is set as deadline. If you post your entry before everything's okay...

Quote from: FSi on Sat 16/09/2006 18:24:31
Could it be RON game or must I create all characters from scratch?
Hm... The rules will be set much clearer and more strict in the next guidelines. Now for this one: You might already have read that free stuff (graphics/sound/...) may be use but selfmade would be better. So you can go with the RON sprites.

Can I use some of that for my game or would that be against the rules?
For music you can go the same way as for free graphics that are offered on the web. You may use it but selfmade would be better. But especially for music this might be very difficult, so if you find a nice tune for free you may use it.
For that MI page I'm not really sure if you might run into a copyright issue with these sounds: I don't know if you're allowed to use these themes for free and I'm not even sure if the "composers" of these arrangements do have the rights to publish these creations as they base on the Monkey Island theme. But I don't want to scare you - maybe it's just my individual look on this topic. Some ideas: You may want to contact the composers, ask here on the boards for support in sound or look for a free music archive. But as said it's just my way to see this topic.

For my 5 inventory items from the list of unused items, I'm considering to use some of these ...
They are all on the list and have not been rejected in any post. Does that mean that they are OK even if some of them might have been used in a game before?
Sure, go for these items. As answered to Xellie we don't look too close here, just try to go for the "unusual".

So is it ok mr. klaus if I make the first part as a mags game and make the others regular games separately? I mean is ok to use the title the story of my mags game in future developments?
Of course all this is allowed. MAGS is not going for any special rights on the entries or something like that. There already exist MAGS games that were followed by a sequel or a deluxe version later. Everything's okay here. Create the game (or the series) just as you like. For entering MAGS you only need to have an eye on the rules ;)

can you post work from a mags game in the lounge to get critisism?
Don't hesitate to post your questions there.

quick question, does your game actually has to be totally done to be an entry?
Let's say it like this: It should have an end.
Noone actually knows what you planned for your entry. So you could leave out puzzles and/or locations for example if you fear not to make it in time. This was done with several entries in the past. Maybe you can set up your game creation in stages and add elements if you still have time left but I can also imagine that this is not the best solution for "all" projects. You can still offer the "complete" game after the competition then.

I'm glad that there's three of us in the competition.
Well, an announced game doesn't mean by default that it also turns into an entry in the end...
