Competitions & Activities / Re:OCTOBER MAGS
Sat 25/10/2003 12:17:18
Hm... It's the October 25th now but Magintz didn't yet post about starting the vote. According to the comments in this thread there could be up to three more entries to come - time for publishing now. (Yes, I read that three other games won't enter the competition  :'()

How about starting the vote in let's say 8 hours from now (see timestamp of this posting)...

Of course every translator will be mentioned in the system then, it wouldn't be nice to leave out the names of these helping hands :)

I wonder: Is there really noone here who wants to help me by offering a translation?  :'(

During the last weeks I set up an easy to use content management system (based on PHP4.1 and flatfiles) that will be published under GNU/GPL license. It still needs some tweaking and smaller changes but the base is finished. The backend can handle multiple languages and therefore I'm looking for people that can translate the languagepack (existing in german and english at the moment) to other tongues. The pack file contains about 250 lines (short sentences or just words) and should not take really long to work on.
If you want to help please pm me and/or post here. Many thanks.

For further information (if needed) there's already a website about mayoco: manage your content.
Perhaps someone wants to use it when it's complete then... :)

Huh... I just discovered this thread today and the topic seems to have changed to "Setting up a MAGS team" already now. You mentioned the "big" problem of keeping up with dates. Well, as I'm the one who activates the voting system I think it's the easiest way to take this on me. Let's say one day before the deadline I post something like "Does anyone need extra time? Voting starts in 24h." If "yes" the MAGS host can post a new deadline, if "no" I'll publish the summary of entries. Good?

(EDIT: Not to get me wrong... Of course the deadline is FIX. Only if there are reasons like last month one could think about extending the time limit. Just handling it like always before.)

A resurection of the ceremonies would be really nice. Let's see if you can make this already possible in October :)

I think it's time now for all to calm down again. The "extra" votes are deleted and that "special" link no longer exists. All should have fun with the MAGS competition and everyone is nice as long as you are nice. TK already stated my intention:
QuoteNow we know this can cause disgualification, and so we will all avoid it.

Minimi outed himself as "the one" an so it's okay. Everyone did his/her best to create a nice little game and to entertain the people here. There is never a real loser in this competition: Every game has its pros and cons, some like the first one's style, others love the second one's plot and don't forget the third one's animations,... So except from creating a game also giving your vote really is not the easiest thing to do. Of course in the end there's one winner, but all the others follow up close as the second winner. Always.

At the moment only Magintz, Jannar and me do know about the current result and about how much (or even if) the "extra" votes made a change to it. I'll keep it to this and for this month I decided not to show the statistics at the end of the voting...

Now don't think about it anymore and wait for Magintz to announce the winner. But never forget the number one rule for MAGS: Enjoy :)

I am really sad: One of the participants added the direct vote link for his game to another forum. He only commented this entry with the line "Dit is echt een hele mooie site, moet je echt zien!!". There's no mention of a contest, none of the other entries, not even a slightliy idea of what's behind that link. So if someone clicks on that link the game gets a voice. This is no fair play!
Just some days ago I made clear how the voting works: Either using the posted summary in this threads or by a visit to the MAGS site! I'll now discuss with Magintz and Jannar if this entry should be completely disqualified or if just the votes transmitted via this "bad" link should be deleted.

Hi Minimi, hello taryuu.

Here are some words about the coming vote: Back in April this year I set up the MAGS website that also includes a voting system. Each time a new entry is posted here I add it to the games list on the site that also works as the database for the monthly vote. Now when the deadline is reached Magintz is giving me a sign to activate the voting system.

At that point there are two ways to vote for your favourite game: I'll post a summary of all entries to this forum. You can directly send your vote by clicking on the name of the game in that message then. The click is your vote. The other way is to visit the MAGS website and switch to the voting area. Here you can also see the summary of all games of the month. It works the same way: The click on the name is your vote. Only one vote is accepted by each person. So if you revisit the MAGS website during the voting period it should show what you chose before.

At the end of the voting period Magintz is posting the winner to this thread. That's also the sign for me to close the system. For a short time then you can see how many people voted for what game in a small statistics on the MAGS site until the new competition starts. That's how it works. :)

By the way: The MAGS voting has nothing to do with the vote on the AGS games list! Just in case someone was thinking of something like that...

Well, Hobbes made a very great job as a host for this month's competition and I think that's the reason for Magintz being so silent as none of his helping words were needed so far. :)

I also wonder why Magintz didn't yet post anything about the end of the competition. Of course it would have been better to announce the deadline a little earlier, but some days ago he said "5 days left" and so the end is reached now. As noone asked for some more time and noone (except noed) gave an answer to Hobbes question about other entries by now I think that's okay.

Well, calling Buccaneer just a winner by default wouldn't be that nice for this good game. Perhaps noone dared to present another entry after its early release. :)

Concerning the September competition: You really shouldn't just post a new topic with your rules to the forum because the MAGS guidelines are set up by the winner in cooperation with the MAGS team. So the best way is to send a message to the MAGS host Magintz (usually he contacts the winner) with your ideas about the new guidelines. He and Jannar then will have a look over it, perhaps will discuss some details with you and finally the MAGS team will post the new rules for September.

There also seems to be something wrong with the room transition style "Cross-fade":

It only happens with the very first transition, when the game starts up. Not in fullscreen but in windowed mode it looks as if the transition doesn't support letterbox resolutions: At the bottom of the window the extended height (40/80 pixels) is not affected by the fading and stays a black box until the effect is over, then it finally switches to the first screen. All following transitions work fine.

As Magintz is having fun at Mittens at the moment it is on me now to say "voting is over" :)

For a long time in the beginning there was an almost equal number of votes for both entries - a change of the leading game with every new voice. But one finally made it to be a clear winner in the end and so here we go:

The winner of the MAGS competition July 2003 is

RECESS by Velislav Ivanov. Congratulations. Vel, please check your private messages.

Well, "...make your choice right here" stands for to make your choice right here :)

Vel and Paranoia presented the download links to their games only in the Completed Game Announcements Forum. Perhaps this might have caused some confusion..? So for further competitions please keep in mind to also post entries to the current MAGS thread. Thanks.

Accidental clicks on the admin log don't matter - as long as they are accidental. ;)

There's another problem with the translation source creator:

Using the symbols " and \ in a command line like DisplaySpeech(player,"How to quote?"); works fine with a leading additional \ char. So DisplaySpeech(player,"These are \"quotation\" marks and one \\ backslash."); shows the message correct. The problem is - you already can imagine - that the translation breaks before the word quotation and starts again with marks. If there's only one \" in a line the translation file can even include command lines following after it. I think the source creator just checks for " symbols to extract the messages at the moment but ignores the special \" combination that should be handled as text, right? :)

Flanneltron - don't panik about your accidental voting. We keep your message in mind. It really seems as if Barry Snotter casted a spell to disappear from his place :-\

Squinky, thanks for your information. It is actually possible to check out who voted twice, but we can not find every double voter because it's an anonymous voting system. Doublets will be deleted.

I added an e-mail link to the MAGS site for voting problems, so we don't need to discuss these here.

Well, if it's a problem for you to see the current results before submitting your vote, it is also possible to set up the system so that it only shows the results after your made your decision. I switched the settings of the demo over to this option now. You can have a new look at it if you want to (IP lock is reset)...

To keep the votes hidden and make the results visible one or two days after the voting period's end is probably the way to go, right? So you can be surprised by a ceremonies trailer and you finally can see if your favourite game ever had a chance to win the competition  :)

This MAGS competition has just started but with likely more than one participant now here's a question about the voting:

As you might have noticed the new MAGS website also offers an online voting system. It uses a temporary IP lock, can show the current vote results or hide them (of course it's nice to see directly who's about to win, but it's also nice to be surprised by the ceremonies). For all who want to check the online voting system I set up a demo (results visible) based on the competition 2003-02: You find a link to it at the bottom of the voting section.

I don't know if the MAGS teams wants to stick to the usual e-mail voting or wants to use this website feature... So what do you think about using the online system?

Of course I am happy about all your positive response, but I still need your help concerning the missing items on the new MAGS site. As I didn't yet get any information about these here's my final try to get your support. This is what still is needed in detail:

-1- Missing screenshots. I wasn't able to find/capture shots of these games:
Ernie's Big Adventure Part 2, Monkeyville, The Dog Kennel, Pixely Pete and the Schpeitzfeld Mansion, Indiana Jones and the Lost Chamber, Fad of Devil's Hash, Tiny Green Piece of Crap

-2- Missing winners. Who won these contests:
2001-12, 2002-06 (TV), 2002-07 (Mittens), 2002-09 (Male/Female) ?

-3- Missing guidelines. What were the rules for 2001-12 and who set them up ?

-4- Anything else that you think is missing so far.

Please help me to complete the site. Thanks a lot...
