Rogue State is now 50% off until December 1st.  Oppress the weak, conquer your rivals and nuke the planet for only $6.49 USD.

We have increased the public hangings by 15% in an update we're still testing.

The price varies by region.

Err.. what?

Because of currency conversion rates, different people will pay different amounts in different countries based on their native currency.  This is the case for all Steam games.  I can post that the game retails for $12.99 USD (and is on sale for 25%-off this week), but that doesn't really help people paying in Euros, Canadian Dollars, RMB, or any other currency.  Also, it means that I need to keep the pricing on this forum current!

We're loving the Let's Play videos.  A lot of people seem to be having a blast with the game.

Hi cat.

The price varies by region.  For up to date pricing, I'd rather people trusted the store than the AGS forums.  As of this moment, it is on sale for $9.74 USD.

Right now, the game is a Steam exclusive.  It will be available with other vendors in a few weeks.

Yes, Steam appears to be failing at the moment.  Hopefully this gets resolved soon.

Fixed that link -- thank you!

The game is 1GB.  There is no demo, just the game.  The fact that the link is called a demo is how the games database is set-up, rather than us.  Steam refund policies are set so that if a player doesn't like the game they just bought, they can return it so long as it was only played for a few hours.  We find players are taking full advantage of this privilege as a form of demo.

You led the revolution that freed the People's Republic of Basenji from the shackles of the imperialists.  Now, decades later, your regime faces its most difficult crisis -- your own brother.

In Rogue State, you are the Glorious Leader who must hold onto power by maintaining the delicate balance between the interests of fundamentalists, capitalists, patriots and liberals while your brother, Farouk, consolidates power and influence with intentions to overthrow you.  How will you manage affairs with your neighbouring countries while ensuring you don't attract too much negative attention from the Americans? Will you be a generous donor to the United Nations or an international pariah building nuclear weapons in secret?  The choice will be yours in this new game from Little Red Dog Games, arriving in 2015.

Rogue State is an economy-management strategy game made using Adventure Game Studio, beautifully rendered in stunning 1280x800p.  It features backgrounds that were drawn by the incredibly talented UnLady and polished by Derek Restivo.

FEATURES

  • A world of possibilities!  Over thirty possible state purchases, six clandestine projects, eight potential neighbours and hundreds of randomly generated events.  No two games will ever be the same, and the approaches you take in one game may not neccessarily be successful in another.
  • Manage complex relationships that are more nuanced than war and peace.  Forging unlikely alliances may just keep Basenji from the kinds of wars your leadership can't survive.  Other leaders have distinct personalities that may inform your tactics.
  • Choose cabinet leaders to help manage your country.  Maintain their favour by accomplishing relevant objectives.
  • Be the dictator you need to be.  Tackle problems with the level of freedom or oppression you desire.
  • Lots of persistent unlockables, achievements, high scores and secrets.

My friends, Rogue State has just been released on Steam.  We're selling for 25% off this week, so you can get a copy for less than $10 USD.  Thank you all for your support throughout this journey.

No Dune Mice were hurt in the making of Rogue State.

Yet.

I've got a little bit of GML experience.  It's quite powerful, and there's a lot of indie developers who have done some fantastic work with it (Risk of Rain, Miami Hotline, Blazin' Aces, Stealth Bastard, Fran Bow, etc.) so don't let anyone tell you that it's limited.  Personally, I find AGS way, way, way more intuitive, but that's just me.  There's a large community over there, and lot of tutorials and scripting support...although if you want to learn an entirely new tool, it wouldn't be the one I would choose per se.

Weird.  I was just thinking..."Man, I haven't played agar.io in a few months, I think I'll load it now.  But first, let's see what's on the AGS forums..."

If you see some giant blobs on one of the NA servers named Gulpo, that's me.

It ran perfectly in Windows Media Player.  With no idea why we're having issues with MP4s in AGS, we're currently trying to make do with Theora, which is good for the universality and the lack of codec licensing issues.  We're dropping the framerate and resolution a fair bit, but it still chugs...just a little less so.
#31
H.264 is supposed to be pretty universal.  However, AGS delivered an interesting error when it attempted to play an external .mp4.  Note that I have no trouble running this .mp4 outside of AGS, but when being called through AGS, it says:

This is a message generally associated with a filter/codec absence.  But the video runs just fine outside of AGS, so I'm at a loss for explaining why things are different inside.  Is this an engine bug?
#32
Thanks for pointing out this information to us -- this is something I'm afraid I would have overlooked otherwise.  I guess we'll pursue the H.264 and see about obtaining a license.

Engine Development / Best video format for AGS
Wed 02/09/2015 19:07:59
Was debating which forum to post this in, so no worries if it needs relocation.

Until now, we've been implementing video in .ogv format for the usual obvious reasons.  Problem is no matter how the video is compiled, the framerate just isn't as smooth in AGS as I would like.

With this in mind, is there any reason why we wouldn't want to use a MP4 with the H.264 codec instead?  That's pretty much as universal as it gets, isn't it?

My only question is how the country came to be named after a central African dog breed? ;-D

After the Americans annexed the region in 1966, they formed a new state and named it after the fictional homeland of Jeannie in the sorta-popular sitcom "I Dream of Jeannie", mostly because Americans love renaming places after wars that they're never going to visit again.

QuoteThis is the first time I've ever cried while playing a simulation/management game.

This is the first time I've ever cried trying to make one.

We've got space for some fake ads to randomly appear with the in-game newspaper.  I thought it'd be cool to toss in references to other indie games under development right now.

If you want your game in there, drop me a line.  Images need to be B&W, 347 x 145.

Hey AGS!

We've been Greenlit after only nine days.  Couldn't have done it without all of your support.

Thank you!

General Discussion / Re: Desura is bankrupt

I must admit, the developers crying foul at this point are the same in every article on the subject, and the video raises some excellent points.  I'm generally okay with anything this pro-consumer.

Back on topic, my plan is to migrate Conspirocracy from Desura to somewhere it can be made available for free.

Really does feel like a little bit of a blow for the indie scene, though, because a lot of games still get lost in Steam when even much bigger indies than the likes of us get 17 minutes on the front page before getting pushed off, and having sites that really want to work with smaller developers is super nice.

Not to mention the newly-minted Steam return policy forcing developers to start implementing DRM and giving consideration to game-length and replayability, rather than just making the game they want to make.

Truth.  I just sent Problem a recording of me singing the anthem into the bell-end of a trumpet while stirring iced tea in the background and he still said he'd find a use for it.
