There's always The Young Gabriel King Chronicles :)

That walkthrough should only be used in emergencies since it's so blunt.

Hey Steve, I really liked your game however a better title might be "The Young Gabriel King Pixel Hunt Chronicles" hehe
Heh, I was a bit embarassed about that. I did tone down the pixel hunting in the version released with this thread announcement. (Particularly the gum, coin and hole - the ball is still hard to get when it's on the green though.)

I just want to say that I liked it but don't make anymore, finish your other game, it looks really cute!
Like I said in the hints and tips forum, way back when it existed, I'm still working on that but progress is slow because I suck at animating "large" characters - it just takes ages. It's the sprite frame cleanup that is so tedious - getting rid of all those double pixels. I keep telling myself I should finish the scripting and then get back to the animation, but that just makes a larger backlog of animation which depresses me even more.

Thanks for your encouragement though!

Wow - I once played the Zone version of this for ten hours straight instead of going home from work. Too addictive! Fortunately it was taken down. Don't know why.

I always thought it was cheating to say how many letters. And it really annoyed me when people would start spelling out the word. If the room condoned it I would immediately move on to another room.

Yeowch, that must be eight years ago...
Thanks for the link!

If you go to the completed games forum, you will find a thread about it.

Oops, my apologies. I didn't know the command line compiler was free with the .net distro.

However, I wouldn't recommend starting programming on a command line. It's a huge barrier to productivity. No autocompletion, no visual organisation of projects, no F1 for help, no "go to definition". Really, I wonder how I ever got anything done before all that stuff. Maybe I'm just lazy, but I prefer to put my efforts into creating, not looking information up and managing make files.

Cheers.

Well said sir.
Ogre looks awesome. And with Novodex bindings? Woo! Good stuff.

Do you intend to create more games about Gabriel King?

Hmm, I didn't have any big plans. But you never know. I had fun making this one.

If you try to use the gas tank you get a hint...
You need something pointy...
Have you got anything pointy in your inventory?
If not, perhaps there's something else you can be doing...
For example (heh), the pitch and putt.

I recommend C++ too.

I started out with games programming learning C and did that for several years - I built up a big internal resistance to C++, which was a bad thing. Writing games code in C gets very ugly and ends up half-faking a lot of C++ features.

As for C#, it's great for tools and I think eventually it will be at a games-writing level, but right now there's no games library support (eg Allegro, OpenGL, etc). Admittedly C++ and C# are callable from each other but sometimes you have to jump through hoops to get it working.

C# is certainly not free with WinXP either. I think it costs about $1000 for Visual Studio .net. macs come with a free C++ and Objective C development environment, XCode - and XCode 2 is shipping with new macs when Tiger is released on Friday. That's meant to be pretty good.

I don't think there are any PC tools that in any way come close to Visual Studio. Bloodshed's is the closest I've seen, and it's a toy by comparison. But I haven't looked into that too much, so I'd love to be corrected...

Err, in conclusion, learn C++.
It's relatively easy if you know some AGS 2.7 scripting.
Good luck!

Great character.
I thought it could do with some little tweaks
- arm length
- his right sleeve
- waist line (the high waist line might be a design choice...?)
- some subtle wrinkles

So nearly there...

You need to get her wet so she's towelling her hair (gets her hands off the book), then *quickly* use the hot club in the water (so she can't see) and finally use the book you're carrying with her.

I can't believe Ron Gilbert agreed to meet you crazed loons.
That doesn't sound like the action of a grumpy gamer to me.

Tell him to quit frigging around and go make an awesome new adventure franchise.

[I did shorten the Emu, use something to look taller, tried the icecream but maybe I had to use it more than once.]

The ice cream melts after 30 seconds so you need to be quick.

[I do manage to wet and upset Mrs. Nakamura but still cannot get exchange the book. Do I have to repeat this operation lots of time or am I missing something. Quite a bit of pixel there :P]

You are missing something...
You have a lighter...
What is flammable?
Use lighter with gas cylinder.
Once you have done that, try some of your inventory items on the flame. Then follow the hints Gaby gives you.
(I'm afraid this may not be a very logical puzzle except in hindsight.)

This is a great game.  I am enjoying playing it.
Hope you make a sequel or another game.  If you do make it longer and more rooms/space to go to.

Glad you're enjoying it!
I enjoyed making this because the animations are small and easy to knock out.
I'm working on a larger game (see my sig) but it's hard work with larger animations.

You're doing fine...

Spoiler

You need to make yourself taller (1) and shorten Emu (2) & (3).

Spoiler

Make yourself taller.
You have something obvious in your inventory for that.
Use steps with Emu.

Shorten Emu.
Emu is standing on sand. If you did this bit already go to (3).
What do you have that could work with the sand?
Use spade with sand.

Spoiler

Shorten Emu.
Dude is pretty well blind.
Behind Emu is a white cliff face.
What's in your inventory that is white?
Use ice cream with Emu.
I apologise if that was obscure.

Gilbert,
I made a few hotspots bigger and added a couple of hints here and there but it's basically the same.

Rosie,
Did you install them both in the same directory?
I don't see how that would happen otherwise.
I'm afraid I can't help you in any case... sounds pretty odd!

Moderators, I wasn't sure if I should start a new thread for this or if you wanted them all together. Feel free to collect them up.

Yup, awesome game. Nice work!
Now get back to Time Out, you slacker!

I also liked the sound and "music" in the Elevator - very creepy.
Saturday School shows a lot of promise - I'm looking forward to playing that when it's finished.

Hooray indeed!
