General Discussion / Strip Generator

I know you've all seen your share of comic builders and generators out there, but I thought this one was rather notable and very versatile.

I figured I'd offer this thread for people to make some silly comics and post them up here. I've been having some fun myself:

Critics' Lounge / New Logo
Mon 19/12/2005 05:44:42
So I decided to make MY OWN logo for my film/photography company. I still used some elements from Iqu's original design, but now I've made it my own.

It's still a bit rough, but I'd like to know other's thoughts on this. Evil says the fingers look like bunnies, but I don't care what he says :-p

General Discussion / King Kong
Wed 14/12/2005 04:24:24
So I just saw an early screening of Peter Jackson's latest epic "King Kong."

All I have to say is.... Well, I really don't have anything to say. I think this is the first time a remake actually surpasses its original. The original King Kong is a masterpiece in its own right, but Peter Jackson has taken the story to a whole new level. Jackson and his writing team have developed something magical, suspenseful as hell, and overall breathtaking.

There's not much more I can say than to just see it. Don't even consider not seeing it for a second. It's the best three hours you'll spend at the theatre.

General Discussion / Hey! I Wrote a Play!
Fri 09/12/2005 23:36:00
And I directed it too!

Last Saturday the one-act play I wrote and directed was performed along with a few others in a sort of dessert/show thing at my school. Overall it was a great night, but I'm not too sure how people recieved the play. They did like my Silent Movie, though, which was also shown.

So without further ado... Here is a video of the performance. (Careful, it's 23MB AND it's WMV)

The play is entitled "All White" and the script can be found here. (PDF)

The performance went well, but there are some rough spots in the dialogue and several lines were skipped. Also, the lighting wasn't as smooth as I wanted it to be, but that's because the light booth was 50 feet away and there was no sound system for the light guy to hear, causing me to run back to the booth and give cues while sticking my head out the booth window.

Enjoy!

Edit: Oh, I forgot to mention that this was originally supposed to be a film that Iqu and I cooked up a while back. Since then he's dissapeared!

Be brutal, but also consider this is the first time I've done my own lighting.
And please no comments about the girl, lets stay technical here.

Hit me with some feedback. Good or bad, it will always help me improve, and that is why I made this post.

Okay. My camera is a Nikon Coolpix 995. It's four years old. It only shoots 3.2MP. The CCD is quite small compared to todays standards, and the lens is less than appealing in low-light situations... But on the other hand, its color reproduction is astounding. For the past two months I've been teaching myself to overcome the weaknesses and embrace the strengths.

I took the following pictures last night. Would you say I have made some progress? (There was only one flourescent bulb giving off light.)

Anyone have tips on lighting, quirky posing, or other things that could be helpful in my quest to overcome my camera's weaknesses, please feel free to comment.

Comment, anyway. I always enjoy feedback. It helps alot.

General Discussion / Tony Scott's "Domino"
Mon 17/10/2005 17:09:32
I've just seen this wonderful film, and I wanted to say that I absolutely loved it... But alot of critics say it is terrible.

The editing, the directing, the soundtrack all were pretty phenominal... Though I realize the hyper-stylistic camera work may drive some people up the wall. Keira Knightly was very convincing as Domino Harvey and I am very impressed on her developing skills as an actress. And of course, Mickey Rourke gives another awesome performance (but didn't really rival his role as Marv... But how can you?)

Anyone else see the film and want to discuss it with me?

There's a new style for me here somewhere, but I dunno if I've quite grasped it. I'm just experimenting with low light and night shooting, as the title below suggests.

Night Shooting with Three Beautiful Women

I'm not too happy with these. They look cool when they're small, but if you zoom in far enough the quality really degrades. Maybe because I've been working on this at midnight, the quality can be lacking... I dunno. I still like them, the quality (blurriness and jaggedyness) just bugs me.

I'm really digging this high-contrast look, though. It works well for night shots.

General Discussion / Picking a Career
Tue 27/09/2005 03:54:23
Okay... I'll try to make this short. I hate rambling.

Here's the deal: I thoroughly enjoy photgraphy. It's gotten to the point now where I'll randomly hold out my hands and form a frame with my finger, looking at potential shots around me. I'll also observe the lighting and say "Hot shit, in this light, that collection of sporks would make a great picture!" It's truly addicting.

On the other hand, I love films. I love watching them, I love writing them, I love making them. I love planning out entire scenes in my head or thinking up dialogue snippets while waiting at the doctor's office...

I also love telling people what to do.

So it seems natural to me to want to direct films. And I do want to direct films. Yet at the very same moment I want to be a photographer.

I'm starting to think that maybe cinematography might be a good field to go into. It's the best of both worlds: on one hand I'd be composing pictures, but instead of static they'd be moving. On the other, i'd be a part of the film world. Since there is no special degree needed to be a director, maybe someday, through experience and connections, I would be able to make films anyway. Eventually.

I'm finally coming to that road where I have to decide what I want to do with the rest of my life (or a really large portion of it.) I'm lost and confused, and would value any input from those who have made these types of choices before.

Thanks!

P.S. I found out yeterday that I've been accepted into the Cinema department at University of Iowa...

I've known of it for awhile, but I've just now tried it out. I'm rather pleased.

I guess there's been some outrage over Yahoo's acquisition of the company, but I really don't what all the fuss is about getting a Yahoo ID. If it means I get to use Flickr, then bringit on.

My site is, of course, here.

Does anyone else here use Flickr?

General Discussion / F.E.A.R.
Sat 06/08/2005 18:04:23
Has anyone heard of the new game, F.E.A.R.?

It's a new FPS from Sierra and Monolith.

Here's what it says from their site:

QuoteYou aren't a soldier. You are a weapon.

F.E.A.R. (First Encounter Assault Recon) is an intense combat experience with rich atmosphere and a deeply intense paranormal storyline presented entirely in first person. Be the hero in your own spine-tingling epic of action, tension, and terror... and discover the true meaning of fear.

Hyper-stylized combat for breathtaking cinematic quality action
Gripping supernatural storyline for spine-tingling intensity of play
Multi-player action with multiple gameplay modes and all single player capabilities

Advanced graphics and physics for visceral movie-like experience
Enemies with special abilities and A.I. so intuitive it's like battling living, breathing players

"This game looks frighteningly good."

The trailer looks amazing and the demo is available here: http://www.whatisfear.com/us/demo.html

General Discussion / Mittens 2006?
Wed 06/07/2005 03:21:20
I know it's a bit early to be asking, but are there any plans for next years Mittens? So far we've been to Britain, Sweden, New York and Greece. Alright. So what about the Midwest?

I'm not just saying this because I live in the Midwest and it's a cheap way for me to attend, but I also say it because it is quite a unique place to visit and the area I am in is a rather popular tourist area.

There are 2-3 pristine camping areas within an hour of the metropolitan area (one is actually only 20 minutes.) There is tons to do in the cities, and the camping spots are clean and fun. The one camping site even has many caves to explore!

This is just a suggestion, but I urge everyone to seriously consider it. I will be 18 by then and more than happy to arrange everything!

Yep, just a thought.

*WARNING* Uncut trailer

Well folks, I'm suprised no-one has mentioned this earlier, but George Romero is finally bringing an end to the Dead series with his latest film, Land of the Dead.

The zombies are getting smarter (and smellier) and have taken over the world. A group of survivors have barricaded themselves in behind a large wall and take their last stand against the horde.

This looks friggin' awesome. Dennis Hopper and John Leguizamo are in it, which are two actors I first discovered in Super Mario Bros (a better move than everyone says)

Anyway, I'm seeing this movie tonight in a new theater they built over in Illinois. Supposed to have awesome seats and killer sound. I can't wait!

Yes, here is a short film I have spent the last couple of weeks producing. The original idea came from Iqu, so props to him.

It was supposed to be serious and scary and stuff originally, but I changed it into a campy, fun silent film thing.

The Silent Movie (56kers Beware!)

If it's not apparent, the boy wakes up deaf and the film shows the crazy circumstances that arise because of this. I apologize for the ending, because, well, production was rushed.

As always, Enjoy!

Nope, this is not a gag background... It's actually a short story I have written.

I beleive this is probably one of my most significant and accomplished works thus far, and I would like some input from your friendly, helpful AGSers.

If you decide to take a gander and find something to edit or a place to add input, put it in parentheses and in red so I can spot it easily.

Thanks!

Well, I've finally caved and purchased my own domain and hosting service (offered through sitesled!)

You can visit my site at http://www.lilgryphmaster.com or my blog at http://blog.lilgryphmaster.com

To celebrate this transfer, I realized that I need to do something new to my site. Right now there is 0 interactivity and it features alot of my old work.

What could I add to the site to make it more interesting, and what design changes could I make to spice it up.

If anyone would like to help design, feel free to step up. I want to make this a fun site that people will remember!

General Discussion / I Made the List

If anyone here frequents Great Writing, you would know that they are offering a contest to win a holiday trip to France.

They announced the candidates today, and my one-act play is on the list. This means, if I get enough votes, I could win a trip to France.

Granted, I'd have to pay my air fare.. But how cool is that?!

If you are a member, vote for teh LGM! If not, register and vote!

Whee! I am excited.

About a week ago, a hack to GIMP for Mac OS X was created by Scott Moschella named GIMPShop. As the name implies, GIMPShop is a conversion of The GIMP's GUI to make it resemble and act almost identically to Photoshop.

A port for Windows XP has just been released by dakira, and now wary users of GIMP can feel at ease using the software. The GIMP interface is much less daunting with this hack. Now bearing an MDI interface, and less confusing labels and menus, GIMP can be used by those that favor Photoshop's interface.

Grab a copy here, and tell me what you think:

General Discussion / Art Conspiracy

I have found a neat site that I am very excited about. The name is Art Conspiracy

It's a free site that basically allows you to build your own portfolio of works. Anything you can think of, they allow. I currently am building up a photography gallery, and some poetry aswell.

http://lilgryph.artconspiracy.com is my portfolio. (You have to pay to get a URL like this, but it's really cheap)

If you used Deviantart, and didn't like it... Maybe this is for you.
