That *is* the flashlight module! :P I think I have the latest version, does it look weird? The way I'm using it has to do with a (what I think is) neat system I put in place. When you're doing well, the diameter of the lit area increases and the surrounding darkness becomes more transparent. When you're doing poorly, the diameter constricts and the darkness becomes less transparent.

EDIT: Also, yes, this is part of a series I've made. :D

I am a bit worried that the parser wont pick up on various guesses that the player puts in...I'll try to add as many synonyms as I can as well as include a walkthrough before the game is finished.

This looks really cool...waiting to see where it goes!

I actually take the opposite approach on the graphics. I think the simplicity involved was what made it all the more interesting.

Wow...it has been a while indeed. Sorry about that. I wanted to post this video to give a little demo of a small section of the game. You can see some new mechanics I've put in. There will be quite a credit list this time around...

Check it out if you like.

*Awkward anxious dance*

Can't decide if I want to play the demo or wait for the full game ahhhhh

Wow, fantastic answers. Thank you both Bill and Snarky! I'm happy that I know how it all works now. :)

I think perhaps the most difficult thing to do here is ensure that this world (as you said) doesn't become too repetitive. It's a great concept and sounds like a hell of a lot of fun, but wouldn't you need to either program a "randomizer" that comes up with new mysteries each time or constantly release new chapters? After all, after you play through a certain mystery once, it seems like it would be really easy to play through it again.

My ignorance in the field of streaming things online has bothered me for ages but I've been too lazy to post about it. There's quite a lot I want to know, since I find it all very fascinating.

1.) When a video streams, what exactly is going on? Is the computer simply taking bits of information at a time and storing them temporarily as they play, or is it actually relying entirely on another computer and just acting as a medium in which to show you?

2.)Similar to the question above, how does...well, everything else work? As far as pictures and such... when you access a website with pictures and text, are the pictures and text temporarily saved to your computer while you view them? Or does the explorer simply show you pictures and text stored on another computer without the need to temporarily store them? Does this process vary depending on the file medium?

Sorry for packing so many questions into one post but my fundamental misunderstanding of how the internet works has been driving me crazy lately.

General Discussion / Re: London Riots

It...still sounds crazy to me, WHAM. Punishing people so severely on first offenses (referring to rioters, and other members of this "hard" crime status) doesn't really give them the chance to rectify whatever they've done wrong. In your imaginary society, I feel the main deterrent to any crime would be pure fear and nothing else. It's a deterrent, sure, but one I find pretty undesirable. I would always prefer a strict *finite* (unless the conditions are extreme, as in a the case of a murderer, etc.) punishment followed by some sort of counseling to give those who have done wrong a chance to make up for their misdeeds. This can help to establish a good moral compass.

I like the way things are in modern society. I don't pirate software because I feel it would be wrong to do so, not because I'm terrified that if I did, the swat team would crash through my windows at 3 AM and beat the shit out of me.

There's also the problem of where and how the line is drawn, and what qualifies one for being put to death or slavery until death. That's something else entirely, though.

As far as criminals fighting for our entertainment, I think it's simply barbaric. I believe lawful punishment needs to have realistic and humane bounds.

This topic makes me think of the lazy bones paradox:

"If destiny designed a master plan which defines everything that is to happen, isn't it useless, for example, to go to a doctor? If I am ill and it is my destiny to regain health, then I will regain health whether I visit a doctor or not. If it is my destiny to not regain my health, then seeing a doctor can't help me."

Flawed? Maybe. Fun to throw out there in this discussion though.

Ah, Blue! Completely off topic, but I believe it was you that really helped me to develop my pixel art style by suggesting and demonstrating how to mute colors a few years back. Well...uh. Thanks for that!! :D

Fuck, leave it on this board! It's a finished, artistic creation made with AGS (and technically, AGS defines anything you create and compile in the editor as a "game"), and it fits better here than anywhere else.
QFT...
how the hell is this really turning into such a huge deal?

Cool game, and really creepy at times; I also like how the mansion feels alive due to the people who keep popping up.

I'm stuck at the part that's missing in Domithan's great LP in between parts 2&3 but I'll keep going :)

Yeah, sorry about that. I accidentally sabotaged my own let's play :P

Damn. Why am I seeing this 30 minutes before I have to leave for work? I'll have to give this a shot when I get home...

Update:

Finished it and loved it!!! Definitely going to have to let's play this one.

A few little bugs I found before I talk about what I liked:

Spoiler

*Sometimes if you try to use something while walking, you end up using the hotspot next to it, even if what you were using was properly labeled as what you were trying to use.

*If you accidentally click the floor where the paper pieces were in the library with the book after you have made the complete book, it makes a new piece of paper. From this point on, the game can not be completed.

*If you just "use" the fruit painting when you have the apple instead of using the apple on it, you can enter the secret passage, but once you leave it, you can't go back in. This also makes it impossible to finish the game.

Very small bugs indeed, mind you, just thought I should point them out. Anyway!

Spoiler

This game legitimately scared me at points, which was fantastic!

Horror games are my favorite, if you didn't know. :P

Anyway: the good stuff!

When I was first trapped in the leaky-pipe room hanging from the ceiling, I didn't even try to escape at first. I was so drawn into the game that I forgot that I was supposed to be interacting with it. I was just listening to the footstep sounds with a nervous smile on my face anticipating whatever would happen when the masked man caught up with me.

Also, the scene in which our hero is hallucinating the body coming toward him is perfect. You don't expect to leave the bookshelf area to find a dead body with blood everywhere. Perfect. You've shocked me. Second, you knew that any naturally curious person would try to inspect the room, and you made the character's response shocked as equally as the player's, which did wonders for immersion. Finally, you hadn't revealed that this was all an illusion too early. The character thinks that the body following him is real, and so did I. I thought this game had suddenly turned into a supernatural horror, and I began to panic as well.

Gah, just so well done IMHO.

One thing that upset me was that we were never able to see what happens in his second hallucination. It just cuts to post-hallucination on the rooftop. I think it would have been great to go through another vision of his.

Anyway, great job. I definitely loved it and I'm going to have fun working on the let's play.
