Here's my situation:

Just over a year ago, my tower's motherboard experienced a surge, completely rendering all of the hardware inside useless. The hardware wasn't phenomenal to begin with, but it sure beat what I've got now:

A standard mid 2011 mac-mini with Intel HD3000 on-board graphics. I've upgraded the 2GB ram to 8. I run bootcamp and have the option of booting into Mac OSX or Windows 7. It was given to me for free, which was extremely generous, but it's just so completely weak in the graphics department that I almost can't stand it.

I'm wondering what my options are as far as keeping all the data I've got on my current hard drive while upgrading the hardware I'm using. Upgrading the graphics on the machine itself seems to be impossible without using some kind of obscenely expensive adapter like this: https://secure1.sonnettech.com/index.php?cPath=139_141&osCsid=2bb8ef09e717de5bacba018dd23b583b

Would it be possible to sell the mini and somehow transfer the software licenses onto new (better) pc hardware?

Any and all suggestions are greatly appreciated as always.

EDIT: I also forgot to mention money is exceptionally tight right now. I'm not in a position to just buy a new rig entirely.

If you don't make Doodlie Or Bust!, I shall be very sad.

"You and your party have been killed by Lord Humungous."

Just think about it is all I'm saying.

...tell ya what. Think of a way to change the setting to 1848, and I *might* consider it.

Priest- That was an incredibly thorough reply, thank you! You've given me many new leads to pursue.

Ponch- You had some very clever (and hilarious) ideas as well. Expanding on Priest's suggestion about a close concept...I hadn't really considered an alternate route entirely.

I can't recall whether I've posted this here before. A quick search turns up nothing, so I guess I'll go ahead. I tried asking this on my law school forum and was instantly condemned to roast in hell for all eternity for "seeking free legal advice." I happen to regard it as a simple question that could be answered by anyone with more general knowledge about the process than myself, but...whatever. I generally find this to be the more friendly atmosphere.

So here's the rundown:

I've recently become interested in making a sort of re-make of The Oregon Trail, ver. 1.2. If you're not sure which one that is, it's not the black and green apple version, it's the colorful version designed for early Windows machines.

Anyway, I want to do this right, and I'd like to be able to distribute the game for free when I'm finished, rather than just letting it sit on my own hard drive for my occasional amusement. That said, I'm trying to find the proper agent to contact regarding permission for this little project to go forward.

Problem is, the original Oregon Trail ver. 1.2 appears to be licensed to MECC, [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MECC] which has since been acquired and possibly re-acquired. [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SoftKey]

I want to do this right, not just go ahead and hope no issues arise/deal with a future slap on the wrist. If I can't find out who to contact, I can't really move forward.

Is there anyone out there that understands this kind of thing better than I do willing to help me out? It'd be very much appreciated.

I'd like to comment on that, Wyatt. You made me think of some things:

(Ending spoilers. Don't read if you haven't finished the game.)

Spoiler
I didn't mind the Max situation so much. Life doesn't always give the bad guy what is coming to them. We were presented with a fairly real situation in which, in order to progress, Ben had to make a tough decision. No matter how much it may have hurt, he had to let Max go for the greater good. Ben was facing very harsh conditions:
1.) He didn't have time to deal with Max because Max was the much lesser of two evils, and
2.) Ben didn't have any realistic way to punish Max. Ben is obviously far weaker, and he had nothing in his possession he could have used to overcome Max's strength.

However, the whole Alice getting mad at Ben thing bugged me a bit too, but for an entirely different reason. Wasn't it more an assisted suicide than a murder? I realize I'm opening up a whole new can of worms here, but I'm bothered by the fact this is never brought up in the end dialogues. Perhaps it was Ben's immediate satisfaction with killing Genovese for revenge that made it murder, but I thought it was pretty jarring when Genovese thanked Ben for killing him. I'm guessing he was happy to have one less sin on his soul after he'd found out all his ruthless killing was for nothing. In any case, though, I guess if one took the situation at face value, Ben did in fact kill the man and that is the truth of the situation. Still, it's something I'm still thinking about.

As mentioned above, I did make one. That said, I'll be the first to admit the parser I programmed is just awful. The reason I'll never make another parser game is because it over-complicated things and slowed productivity to a crawl. It didn't help that I had to make up for plot holes that I dug as a freshman in high school, but the parser and the game itself were probably doomed from the start.

Woah. Woah. Hold the freaking phone, Grundi. I recall a conversation of ours about 1...possibly 2 years ago in which I asked about access to the soundtrack for the other games to which you replied they would be released with the release of the final game. I was also taunted by several users of IRC for not being able to figure out how to convert the .vox files from the other games into music files. I DEMAND SATISFACTION.

On a much, much, more serious note: congratulations. I loved the game. I began playing it earlier this afternoon and didn't put it down until I had seen the four "main" endings.

This series is kind of special to me. Ya'see, just a few years ago in my undergrad days, my (then) girlfriend (now fiance') and I were not exactly the most party-goingest, bingge-drinkingest crazy cats, so we tended to stay inside on very cold, snowy winter weekends. We only had one afternoon together most weeks since I would have to travel to her campus at that time, and if it was a snow-in, we'd likely spend it playing a Ben Jordan game. The memories of those days are quite precious to me. Nerdy to an unidentifiable degree? Perhaps. I dunno. In any case, thank you.

Hello everyone. I'm sorry I haven't posted in a very long time. I'm still working on games and projects and such, so no worries.

Anyway-

Just thought it would be worthwhile to mention that I've been working on some tracks which anyone may use for any purpose. I know they're a bit oversimplified, but I've had a lot of fun mixing them and tinkering with loops and virtual instruments, so if you're interested, here ya go:

When I was in middle school I created a short mystery series about an amatur detective named Jon Arc, who worked freenlance, the first story was a case where he was called to a musem to help with threaths that the artwork would be stolen and if anyone tried to stop them they'd be killed. If i could get people to help make a game:

the events of the game would take place during the course of a week as Jon goes to a gathering of people who go to see the new exibits and artwork at the meusem, the local bar, the park and other locals of Carson City. but once a guest is murdered everyone is shocked, coincidently enough Jon runs into a rival freelance detective named Avon Williams. So of course Jon has to catch the murderer before he gets killed, who could it be, the trampy wife of the mesuem owner, the security guard, janitor, or could it even be Avon?
one by one the people who attended the party are murdered, by diffrent methods, drugs, hit and run, shot, strangled, and even bashed in the head with a hammer.
"Jon Arc: Muesum Of The Dead"

The big diffrence in my original story and the game plot is that Jon was a teenager in the orignal he will be in his twenties in the game, also it should be noted that he is homosexual but isn't flamboyant or anything. I had written three stories revolving around him and his mystery solving, I've been brain storming alot and I'm really trying to give it a shot at writing a good game and some good dialouge and letting a group of people take a crack at it.
I plan on improving the storyline and all because I'm now a senior in highschool and have some better knowledgew of suspense. This idea means alot to me. And I hope it peaks someones interest.
Another diffrence is that I'm rewriting my orginal story and adding some reaccuring characters, Jon's close friends, Asia Rene who is a beautiful and younger journalist for the Carson City Times, Tyree Wilson the owner of a gay bar that Jon always hangs out at, that gives him dating advice *he's straight*. Avon is actually new as well, and my idea for him is that he keeps getting in Jon's way and the two eventually become lovers

It's a great ambition, but understand that many people on the forum are extremely wary of profiles which state "I haven't yet worked on any finished games.", and this is for a good reason. If you'd like help, it would be a good idea to develop something a bit more concrete than a short summary of the story in your game. A story is but a small slice of a complete game project. I know you might have every intention of completing a big project, but it might be wise to start with a training game first. You can find stories of heartbreak all over the forum from people involved with projects that end up falling short.

Please understand that I have no intention of discouraging you from proceeding with your project, I love any enthusiastic development in the community. Still, if you'd like help, it might be wise to come back later with art, music, a complete story/script, code, and anything else you can possibly bring to the table.

Well, this is very much appreciated. I was planning on releasing an update with a greater variety of words and actions available, but I never really got any information about what exactly some people were trying to put in. I'll spend some time tonight updating the game with a long list of everyone's suggestions :D

Edit: In fact, it may be wise to ditch the parser entirely and make this into a point n' click at some point...but for now I'm beginning another project which I am much more enamored with, so...who knows? :P

I do hate to bump this so shamelessly, but at the same time, I'd definitely appreciate some feedback regarding this game. I feel like it has kind of vanished since its release. Is there anyone out there who has played it that could tell me more about the experience?

ig299, please post clear information about your project. Edit your post please.

gamemaster468, all new posts always go to the end page, and people are only checking the end pages of this thread anyway.

Wishy washy poorly written posts are going to be removed!  :=

so what didn't you get in my question?

*Is it a male or female role? Both?
*How many lines do you need done?
*When is it due?
*What format should the files be submitted in?
*Is microphone quality an issue?
*What is your game about?

To name a few.

Paid position:

I need someone to animate the characters I am drawing. There will probably be 7 or so in total. All I need is a basic 4 direction walk-cycle for each and a few extra movements for a few of them. The position will pay $30 USD. The payment can be discussed. Here is an example of one of the sprites you will be working with:

Please message me for further details as well as a quick demonstration of your ability to do this. Anything example of work you've done in the past will work, really. I'm just looking for something a bit more clean and neat than what appears in my games.

Oh damn, I kept trying bookcase instead of that! The game has been very entertaining, but as you point out in the end the parser was too strict. Thank you for the trilogy and the help :)

Thanks for playing! :D

Cool! Finished the game now, thanks! But ... how do i make the book disappear in a non-violent way?

Awesome :D Glad to hear someone got through it! :P

You can put the book to rest by simply

putting the book on the bookshelf, or "put book on shelf".

I'm stuck! when I kill the beast I dont know what to do, and what do i have to get from the jewelry box?

It's not what you get from the jewelry box, it's what you put in it.

Spoiler
There are four things you need to do to get to the second part of the game that does not take place in the mansion:

1.)Take down/destroy the painting
2.)Shoo away/kill the beast
3.)Destroy/lay to rest the possessed book.
4.)Give the ring to the spirit/put the ring in the jewelry box.

You get the ring from inside the birdbath.

The way you solve any of those 4 problems decides which ending you get, so choose carefully.

You're almost there..

Code: ags
function Box(this Character*, string Message)
{
  this.SayAt(x, y, width, Message);
}

With x, y, and width obviously needing to be replaced with static values for your purpose.

Ah! Okay, thanks! That's very helpful!
