In that sense, yes, any law inforcement is interferring with free will.

On a more sociological approach, it is my will to don't get killed by a drunk driver. Therefore : Those laws are not restraining my free will.

On a psychological sense, if I'm totally well socialised with the above laws (to the point of never challenge them intellectually) yes It interfered with my free will. Because it sets the maze in which I'm a Rat avoiding thinking outside the box.

But :

Some definitions of free will included very well the fact that rats in a maze have choices anyway.


On a more nietzschean approach, free will is a pure illusion created by theologians in order to explain why some are believers and why some are not.

I'm glad to see this on track again.

It depends on what you are considering a puzzle.

Puzzles can be use to avoid player to received too much information at the same time.
(speaking with 10 NPC in a row is boring)

Puzzles can be use to avoid the player feeling lost on a huge game world.
(No keys before reaching this point of the story)

Puzzles can be use to create cliff hangers between sub parts.
(I wanna talk to the next NPC to know where it's going, but I need to escape first)

Puzzles can be use to reinforce Ideas set by speeches.
(Mr. X is considered bad, and 10 minutes later the player need to dodge Mr.X bullets)

Puzzles can be use to make the player having the feeling HE is the player.
(Instead of just listenning for a long speech, the player need to buy the guy another beer)

Puzzle can be use to make the world arround realistic.
(Why not just trying that, oh gosh, nope it don't works)

So to that definition, I hope you have more than 3 puzzles. It's not a golden rule, but it usually make a game more enjoyable.

I'm missing HOTU soo much. It's now too late to have some backups and many of the feature games were impossible to found anywhere else.

I went to AGS because of HOTU. Larry Vale was featured on the Hall of Belated Fame and 5DAS / 7DAS were the first game you found clicking on the Adventure Game Pane.

In fact Chris, what you are trying to acheve will be impossible in any latin language (Italian-French-Spanish-Portugeese-Romanian) and all the others who use gender (russian and others).

It's going to be way faster to  rewrite your unhandled events (or let the translators do such) than trying to overturn it using text parser. This (theorical) parser will need to use all the game words just to know which prounoun are going to be place before.

That's an old issues that any french programmer have to dealt with since the 80's. And there's still no easy answers otherwise than rephrasing more robotically some sentences or by manually writing their interractions one by one.

Here my 2 cents :

1- Stay with the same objective. It's the cement of your speach.
Ex. The main point of games is to be fun... here's how I try to achieve it.

2-Always links what you say to what they know.
Example: Linearity of movies vs non-linearity of Game plays.

3-Think for them without being pretentious.
Ex.: I think that scripting for a movie need to be done backward, it isn't? It's the same for me when I wrote my game puzzles.

4- A fair use of Lieux-Communs (common ground?) is always liked.
Ex.: In (any greek blockbuster), this happenned that way, but this kind of scipting is usually no liked by game player because it makes players feel useless.

and 5- Don't be affraid to give exceptions when needed. You'll be in front of intelligent peoples.
Ex. Some video games story are more weak (like FPS) some other are way stronger.

Maniac Mansion
It's now a first person perspective game with olny 1 player character (probably Jeff). All the puzzles get removed exept the one inolving keys. All cutscenes are 30 minutes long and feature FMV previously rips from the movie Saw III. Good news : The chainsaw now have gaz and the very dulled knifes can be taken.

Zak McKraken
After you use the Bob E. Pinz sign in order to backstab a terrorist in the plane, your flight drop you to Irak. Annie is still there, but she wears leather and do sidekicks with her 5 inches high-heels. She's playable after Elvis tried to rape her. Leslie and Melissa are not feature in the game anymore and all animals are removed in fear of a PETA online petition.

Monkey Island I and II
- Guybrush is now called 'Mike' and you can create your own ship with 100 different styles and 500 colours (you can buy 400 others on the Lucasarts Site). The spitting contest is removed under the pressure of some Arkansas parental board who find this unapropriate for kids - even if the insult fights are switched for real fights with 10 possible bloody endings.


The Dig
Any references to a scientific expedition are removed. The extra-terrestrial beings are not giving clue anymore and are clearly hostile. All the team came from the same country and - anyway - the action is set somewhere in Africa. You can now drive the 'balls' (trams?) yourself but olny after you find the plastic to explode the doors in the nexus.

Full Throttle
They added a lot of old ladies trying to cross the road everywhere. Ben can now kicks that dog statue made of aluminium.

Monkey Island 4
No apparent change at all.

The "Let's go guys , let's have a wiki article" attitude are precisely the reason why Wikipedia policies are made. I know how it can sucks sometimes, but that's for the good of the wiki project.
