Critics' Lounge / Re: Low Res Character

 Good start!

I would suggest forgetting the side-view for the time being and concentrate on the front-view. The boby now looks better with this ratio.
- As already mentioned contrast should be stronger
- No-ones shoulders are at the same hight with the end of the neck. Try lowering them a bit (probably a pixel)
- Also the body is exactly square. I think the upper-body should be a bit wider.
- And don't be afraid to move the hand's closer to the body. The white cap is not needed. You can separate the hand from the body simply with contrast.

I don't want to discourage you, so enough for now!  ;D Hope to see you improving!

Keep having fun!

There is too much tension on this board. We should loosen up. I like this forum a lot, but now it seems that it's turning into a civil war battlefield if we continue like this. I know I'm not very active with posting, but I check this forum about 3 times everyday.

ON TOPIC:

I must say I agree with progzmax about the basics. I know it is hard to get into learning all that, but it gives a lot of depth to your images later and helps you read the masterpieces better and understand how they are built up. Also I just read a good article what you may or my not have seen already. Ofcourse experimenting is always welcome, but I would still suggest to draw as accurately as possible in the beginning. If you know how things work then you can safely crack it open and change the things that are needed.
If I wasn't useful then I hope the article was.

Keep on studing, practising and having fun.  ;D

I'm tired, and thought that I should give this competition a try once. Well here is my pieces of master.  ;D  At first I thought about the extinction of muffins, but then I thought to go for something serious.

NOTE: Warning! Please do not read this if you have the tendency for depression!
Reminder! This is just fiction and my imagination, so don't take it seriously

                                                                                 Chain Reaction

The small amount of scientists who are still alive think that all this started mostly when the mosquitos became extinct. I think that they are somewhat right - the extinction of any living organism played a big role in this downfall.

The downfall had started even earlier somewhere around 20th and 21st century. Noone even remembers it nowadays. It seemed that all was going fine, though there were some troubles with the climate, no politician saw it as a real threat. And the climate wasn't a problems to us, we began building houses that were stronger and could stand against ferocious weather and natural disasters. All mankind thought we were safe from extincion, but it seems that in all that scientific advancement we had in that time, we did not see what was coming to us. We hadn't built shelters for animals.

More and more of wild animals became endangered species, most of them carnivours. This ment a broken link in the food chain. With little time small critters, rats and other animals grew in numbers. All sort of diseases, old and new, spread fast. So we stared to kill all kind of animals or bugs that seemed to be able to carry any illness.

Then, too late we understood what we had done! We, humans, the supposedly most advanced species, had in a long period of time cut out most of the links from the food chain. When we realised it, we went berserk. People started protesting and, then in a matter of days, rioting. In every country their own citizens rose agains their goverment and each other. Soon there was shortage of food and water. And there were no ways to start producing as much as needed. The cultivateable lands were soon dead. Mass suicides started to occure from one place to another.

There were only about 100 000 of us alive 5 years ago, and it seems we have only decreased in numbers. I think I could last about another 4-5 years. Then I will die, like all of my close friends and family.

I agree with Ali, I thought that the head was weirdly tilted before. Also I think that no clothing is like that under the breast(maybe only latex), Ali has soften it and I think it looks better now.

Now this is wierd, because now I don't know what is right. Ofcourse if I use only 4 colors I would not make any mistake but when I searched google some ff 3 characters have 4 colors plus transparenty.

Right now I put it all together, because the actual size of nes sprite is 8x8 pixel but the FF and my character is 16x16 sprite that are actually put together of four 8x8 characters. And in each single 8x8 can have 3 colors plus transparenty. Then you can have 4 colors and transparenty for 16x16, because each individual  8x8 sprite have 4 colors but they don't have to have the same colors in each 8x8 sprite.
Hope I made sense!(Now have to look if my sprite is well in that limit)

Sorry for going off topic.

When I saw this topic and read this idea, I started to make a mock-up for fun. I imagined this to look like old nes FF games. I have already made a Guybrush.
Here he is!

Right now I'm making the first scene tiles. I do everything with nes restrictions in mind. If I should finish this mock-up I will upload it to Pixeljoint.

Seems cool, but one thing that bothers me with the last background is the weird doorway (if it is that), The shape is not understandable for me. It looks like someone has tried to make human-tetris in spaceship.  ;D Though the room is very well textured and atmospheric. Keep up the good work!

Hope you find a good musician for this project, who can create the mood it needs!

Sampy I think he looks normal, but that is not what you probably want. He lacks personality, hunders of guys can look like that - jeans and white T-shirt. Think about Guybrush or other known characters - there is something that always makes them recognisable. Your character hasn`t got that factor just yet. And it must not be something big or strange - but a little bit of difference from our everyday people(if that isn`t where your aiming for).
I also noticed that you have used a lot of extra colors, 60 colors is too much, think about animating every frame.

Don`t understand why the image is so big and blocky. Is this his original resolution?

PS! I´m doing a remake but don`t know if I have time to finish this soon.

It looks pretty good, but it isn`t pixel art - in pixel art the placement and the color of each pixel is thought of. Blender tools, photoshop effects and color reductions are not allowed in pixel art . You clearly didn`t choose every color yourself, as the color count is 2833.

If you want to do pixel art I would suggest learning from here.

I think that the mountains do not look as realistic because  the contrast is a bit dull if it`s morning. (Just my opinion. You can wait and see what others have to say about this)

This doesn`t actually correct the perspective problems. I would recommend to scrap this and start from the beginning with fixed perspective.
Although I must say that I like the way you have done the rocks - the colors and style look interesting. Though some buildings should have more contrast.

I found this tutorial(not the best, search for yourself if you want it fully explained)

Theme: Disco is one of the weirdest things ever, it can even make you ill - and that`s what I want you to do. Give the animation of the Real Disco Fever feeling(anything goes - even in literal meaning), but it must be understandable that it`s a disco move or related to it.(I hope I explained myself clearly  ??? )

Rules:
- Your animation must follow the theme above.
- No size, colour or frame limits.
- You may animate the supplied sprite, modify and animate the supplied sprite or draw and animate your own sprite.
- All entries must be posted in this thread by the deadline below.
- The host of the competition will judge the winner.

Supplied Sprite

Also feel free to make your own sprite.

Deadline -18th September

I hope there will be some participants. Good luck to all!  ;D

In my opinion, the cape looks kinda flattish(if there is such a word), , the shapes of the body aren`t seen.(but maybe it is your intention or my crooked eyes that misguide me)
Although he looks awesome already.   ;D

I hope you don`t mind that I remade her from the front view.  :-[  From the side-view she looks quite nice.
I made her a pixel wider(for the gap between legs) and a pixel taller(to fix the face after making wider). I reduced the color count from 20 to 15. Used more contrast, made her shoulders more feminine, made her eyes green so these would be more noticeable, skinned her legs a bit. Also took the apron color from the older remake I made for her when she was hi-res.
Hope I covered all I did, and it is of any help.

Wish you luck on your project!  ;)

Critics' Lounge / Re: Main character Sprite
Fri 21/08/2009 10:53:40
I think it`s quite ok. But you use too may colors - 52 colors for a character is too much, if he is the main character then you should be able to animate him as well.

I quickly remade your sprite, changed  contrasts and the lineart a bit, used only 15 colors.

Feel free to do anything you like with my edit.  ;D

Ok, I did something for this competition also. Hope you like it!  ;D
If I find some more time I will make it more interesting. But here it is for now!

I also made this little mock-up. Used only the colors give by Ben.

The lineart in hi-res is kinda whacky - although if that fixed I´d liked to see a game with such graphics.

Critics' Lounge / Re: hi can any one help

First I think you should clean your line art and you`re using too many colors in the face. Also, you should start animating after you have fixed the sprite itself. I`m trying to do it myself, but I don`t know if I have the time.
