General Discussion / Re:3 hours sleep...
Thu 25/03/2004 21:43:19
I do think insomnia is common among journalists.  It didn't occur to me until you mentioned it, but half our journalism staff suffers from it.  There are days that they're no fun at all to put up with because they received no sleep the night before, but I won't complain because I've had my share of those days as well.
However, despite the fact that insomnia is not fun at all (at least when you have to get up early, anyway), if you have to suffer from it there's nothing better than a good game and a lot of Internet.
Of course, a little bit of alcohol wouldn't hurt either but I'm underage so I won't go there. ;)

General Discussion / Re:3 hours sleep...

Your day today sounds sort of like my day Monday.
I'm associate editor on my school newspaper and Monday was the day the lastest issue was supposed to be sent to press.  I'd brilliantly stayed up and only gotten four hours of sleep the night before.  I guess I should've known better.
My Journalism class is at the end of the day.  It's a great way to end things...usually.  Unfortunately, I go in there on Monday and one of our senior editors had disappeared, taking our half our newspaper with him (he was in an unplanned meeting).  Okay, that was fine.  There was still 40 minutes of class left and he was supposed to have finished everything up over the weekend.
But we needed to know for sure that he had actually done everything, so I went and managed to track down the paper in one of his classrooms (still no editor to be found), took it back to the Journalism room, and pulled it out to look at it: There was practically nothing on it.  We became a little nervous, but not yet panicky.
We had to send the paper out in half an hour and he had the disk with all the articles on it with him.  Okay fine.  He'd get out of his meeting in a few minutes and we'd just print everything off then.  We knew it wouldn't take half an hour to do that, there was just no way it could: All the articles were done, they just needed to be laid out.  Or so we thought.
He comes back 15 minutes before deadline and tells us calmly, "My disk won't work anymore.  I don't have any of those articles."  Talk about panic.  We went into horrified shock.  Then he said, "I have most of the articles in my email though so we'll get them from there."
WRONG!  At that moment the Internet was down on every computer in the school because of some weird thing the technicians were doing.
We did get the paper done that night (way, way past deadline, needless to say) but I can't vouch for how good it's going to look when we get it back from the press on Friday.

So yeah, DG.  I get what you're saying there.  Sleep and annoyance aren't good mixtures.  They're both very tiring.
(Sorry this was such a long post.  I didn't intend it to be.)

Good point, m0ds.  I'll probably have to start my own country to get the high IQ-ed leaders.  Another planet would probably be best for that.  Any of you want to go with me and be co-founders?

It's really odd here.  I'm on the eastern US coast (WV to be exact, which isn't really coast but you probably know what I mean).  Last night we had a big thunderstorm with rain and wind and lightning; you know, all that good stuff.  Well, it was still storming when I went to bed, but I got up this morning and it was snowing.  I can't anything but white fluff out there now.
It's such a switch from the warm weather we had yesterday and I hope it stops soon.  I only like snow when it gives me snow days (immature, I know) but we don't get those anymore thanks to our brilliant board of education.
I'm seriously considering moving somewhere warm...and somewhere where people in authority have higher IQ points.

The first AGS game I played still has a warm place in my heart.  But that's probably because Larry Vales (the adorable scoundrel with the sideburns) was the one who stole my adventure gaming virginity.
Actually, it seems like he got a lot of you.  ;)
But anyway, I think I moved on to Norman Cooks or Permanent Daylight after that.  Wow, I first played those...almost two years ago if I remember correctly.  Where did time go?
Well, wherever it went, AGS has improved and been improving since the first productions I played from it (and those were great games, mind you; I'd play them again in a heartbeat) and I've seen some equally excellent games come from the newer engines.  I'm really looking forward to seeing some of the future games.
Know what?  I think I just convinced myself to go finish building my own game.  I'll be back in a few centuries...

You can't get into the shed until you do what you have to do with the pot.  Open the window in the museum and use the pot on it.  I don't remember if you have to pick it up and use it on the window or what, but you have to drop it.  You should then be able to go outside and get what you need off the ground.

I don't know if this'll help anyone else, but I thought I'd share in case it does.
For a little while the game kept freezing up on my computer.  Things were just getting worse as time went by.  So I decided I'd try something and deleted all the files from the game I was currently battling with and reinstalled it from the original .exe file.  I didn't redownload or anything, just installed again from the same file as before.  And it worked.  I haven't had a freeze up with it at any of the places they kept happening before.  Now, this solution does mean you'd lose any progress you'd made, but I personally didn't think it was that hard to remember what I'd already done, and I've progressed a lot farther now because I can do things I couldn't before.
It seems a little weird but it worked for me, maybe it'll work for some of you too.

I'm very sorry to hear that you had to take your game down.  You did a lot of hard work and you have to be really disappointed.
Czar is right.  The same thing happened to Spyros's "Hugo's House of Horror Remake." (HHH Remake.)  I think for awhile he gave the game out privately if someone sent him an email and requested it but I don't know if he does that now.  Maybe you could consider doing something like that.
This is really a great game but I, too, am having problems with the walkable areas.  I'm going to try to figure out a way around them but it would be great if you could find a way to fix the little stuff like that and redistribute the game.  There's a way out there for redistribution, I'm sure of it but you may have to do a little sneaking to get around it.  You didn't do anything illegal, I assure you, and you were trying to do the honorable thing by telling PAWS.  They shouldn't have reacted the way they did.
What did they say to you anyway?  Do you still have the email?  If you do, I'd like to read it and I think a few others have mentioned they would too.  It'd be great if you could post it.  Maybe that way we can help you figure out the best way to fool the experts.  ;)

You aren't too late.  He's a guard, he's supposed to say that.  And (as in every game I've ever played) you're supposed to bribe him.  ;)
He says he'll take some hot chocolate so:

Interact with the hose in your back yard and use the mug you picked up *somewhere* inside (I don't really remember exactly where) on the mud, then go in the kitchen and warm it in the microwave.

You should now be able to get into the park.  Then you can:

Use the axe on the log that's on the ground.

You don't need to chop any trees.  :)

Yeah, I'm sure you'll find something to do in Montreal.  I don't remember what I did up there because Canada is kind of a blur in my memory, but there will always be something.
You're going through some very beautiful territory up there.  Hope you guys have fun.  And remember, have a great trip.  :)

Maybe this'll give you some ideas of what there is up there.  I don't know if you've seen it before but here it is if you want it.

I did the whole "road trip up north" thing a few years ago.  My little group and I went all over the New England area and we were even up in Montreal now that I think about it.  Do you want any suggestions for interesting places to stop when you're driving by or are you guys all set?

Excellent game.  Are you SURE it's only your first?  ;)
There were a few bugs, which I think you already know about, but other than that there were no problems.  You had some great puzzles.  I never would have thought of some of that stuff myself.  Good for you.
I'm definitely looking forward to anything you put together in the future.  Just remember, you keep makin' 'em, we'll keep playin' 'em.  Great job.  :)

Did you talk to the scarecrow?  And what else have you done?
I guess I'll just tell you to click around and try some stuff and see if you can figure something out.  There's some combination of things done that brings him back.  If you still can't get him to return, post what's in your inventory and we'll see if we can help you out.  :)

You don't need to actually get inside the jukebox after you've opened the cover.  You need to find an inventory item to use in it, but that's at the very, very end.  How far along are you?

If you mean the key on the ledge, you need to go fishing.  You'll need a few inventory items before that's possible though.

Good luck, guys.  I'm not sure I answered your questions, but if you need more help just ask.  :)

Hey that's great!  I'm glad I was more helpful than I originally thought.  I feel almost useful now.  ;)  Congrats on finishing.  :)

Hmm, I don't know.  Have you tried looking at the stuffed cat and then talking to the clerk?
Maybe someone else knows, but I pesonally can't think of anything else for you to do.  Just click around a little and see if there's something you've forgotten and if that doesn't work, you might just have to try starting over.
Sorry I couldn't help more.  :-\

The razors are in the bathroom.  Try interacting with the bathroom door then going out to the bar and talking to Evenwolf (the guy by the jukebox).  He'll tell you the ingredients you need to make something to make the bathroom become unoccupied.

See how things go from there.  :)
