General Discussion / Re: About length in games
Mon 21/04/2014 17:35:28
I don't know if really have an opinion regarding whether games in general should be shorter/longer, HOWEVER, I'd be REALLY happy to see more games with shorter length. Having to balance small children, full time studies, some extra work, a little game making, social life and Friday night romance leaves too little time for gaming (and makes lasca a dull boy). For me, episodic games, like Walking Dead and Wolf Among Us, is perfect! The episodes are released regularly but with months apart, always leaves me wanting more but with a "ending". I still haven't completed Assassins Creed 3, mostly because my sessions are so far apart I loose interest. I'd love to see more high budget games done in episodic format, and I'd pay for it! Meanwhile, I'll just stick too FTL. That's a game with perfect length and incredibly high replay value! Also, thanks everyone for a very interesting discussion. (excuse all the spelling misstakes, no time for correction!)

Alright, had another try:

Gee, those arms just won't look right. But I guess they look better anyway.

Khris: At first, I wasn't really sure I agreed with you on the face thing. So I cut out the face and put on a frontal view face, and yeah, you were right. Thanks!

Thanks dactylopus and danbuddle! Really help full observations.

QuoteI think she'd be a Nietzsche fan, just discovering the basics of existential philosophy and it is likely to make a her a tad nihilistic
This is definitly being added to her personality. Thanks!

Khris:
Your paintover really makes sense. Both arms are much better this way, and moving up her knees absolutly feels right. And the feet... maybe they were just a *bit* too big ;)
I'm not so sure however about moving up the waist of the pants, I kind of like them  hanging low. And I think I'll keep the shirt long. I'll do a rework asap and we'll see how I manage. And oh! Why did you change her face? Wondering just so i'll know what was wrong with it before.

Thanks Khris.
Regarding the left arm, it's supposed to be pointing out away from the head, if that's understandable, but I can see that it isn't clear from the drawing. I'll see what I can do. Thanks again!

Hi guys!
I'm currently working on some concept art for a new game, and could use some feed back on my main character.
Here she is:

I would very much appreciate assistance with the three following things:

1. Who is she?
Well, I know who she is, but who do you think this character is just by looking at the image? Is she a jedi-knight? Or does she belong to the dark side? You tell me! (And oh yeah, the things in her hand could use a liiiittle more work. Kinda forgot about those)

2. Who do you want her to be?
That is, what would you change? Are you thinking "Her hair looks like a frickin' helmet! She'd look much better with a mohawk!"? Then please let me know.

3. How did I do?
technically, did I screw something up? Is her head too small (is it? I'm not sure...)? Hands should have more/less fingers? I didn't know, honestly, so please enlighten me!

Other then this, just tell me whatever you want. This is actually my first nonpixel-all-tablet drawing, so I could use any feedback.

Cheers!

-edit-
And yeah, it's the same girl as the avatar, but I was half a year less experienced and she's half a year older.

Can i use Camus for hints? ;)

Thank you both for the quick responses.

QuoteJust try it and see what happens.

This was great advice, and exactly what I will do. Next time before posting. Thanks again!

Alzo, what I'm wondering is:

If I make an animated video sequence to use in my game, that's in (for example) 320 x 200 resolution, can my video sequence be in another resolution? If I make it in another resolution, what consequences will it have and do I need to maintain the same proportions etc.?

I've searched the forums for a topic resembling this, but haven't really found any. Could be because the answer is self evident and I'm just to analogue.
Grateful for any help!

Alright, my votes:

Concept: Daniel Eakins. That would make a brilliant game! I loved that movie when I was a kid (and still do).

Artistic Execution: Selmiak. Great use of few colours and great composition. Makes me wish I'd done my background in lower resolution. (If this was a character blitz, I would definitly vote for Mad. Love them!)

Playability: Miez. I want to know what's on that billboard. Who's that purple guy? And where does the baloon go!?

Snarky: Eeh... yeah... It's really not a detective movie... But the game could be!! However, you should watch the movie. I love it! and thanks!

Eric: That Darjeeling Coach isn't crappy! Would have loved to see it finished.

Me to did a update.

Thank you Eric! I'd love to see your crappy Darjeeling train coach, so don't scrap it!
And yes! It's a room (do you say room about boats?) from the Belafonte, from Life Aquatic.

So this is my entry:

[imgzoom]http://i.imgur.com/QjAehdN.png[/imgzoom]

Really wanted and needed to do more work on it, add a GUI and a character like the rest of y'all among other things, but life and my schedule was working against it.
Anyways, I'm pretty happy about it.

So, can anyone tell where it's from? The font's a clue!

Update:
Exits: The door and the ladders down and to the right.
Hotspots: In the bookshelf you'll find a book about sharks and in the desk you'll find both a harmonica and a pen knife.

I agree with Snarky. The menus are hard to make out in all of the fonts.
All of the speech bubbles are readable, although the Fanboy font isn't as clear as the other ones (but maybe that's just me).
Personally I prefer Web Letterer!

Hattori Hanzo... It's Kill Bill! Isn't it? And the inventory holds the pussy wagon keys and the death-list.
#197
What a great theme!
I'm going to try this one, if I can find the time and make something decent enough.
Oh what fun!
#198
Thanks Problem!
you're my go-to-guy!

What a great game! Loved it. MY favourit part was fighting the scorpion in the desert. Genius!
Thank you for this game!

So, a question:
Besides the knowledge I have of AGS coding, I'm REALLY clueless regarding programming and such. Now to the question. Let's say one would want to construct a management game, like for example Prison Architect and such, is there somekind of engine one could use for this? If not, where would one go to learn what was needed?
