Oh,oh,oh, did you really believe that?

http://www.inside-360.pytalhost.com/?p=13078

According to that, it was just a joke.

Perhaps the fact that the Germans inadvertantly released news on an unannounced game sent lucas into a frenzy. Nda's exist for a reason. Probably why the mention on the German ratings board page has disappeared. You don't just make a rating page for 'Secret of Monkey Island - Special Edition - XBOX LA' because you think it's a fun idea when you work for a government organisation. Especially in Germany.

If you read the press on it Jetxl, you will notice that NOTHING has been officially announced. We do not know if it is a simple cash-in, or if they have remade the damn thing. Whilst it doesn't need a remake, it would be oh so pretty in HD. Just hope they don't spoil the style by going for an EoMI psuedo-3D game.

According to Adventure Gamers, official details are expected at E3 in two weeks. I will ignore idle speculation until then.

Facebook is great if you know how to use it. My settings are set to private, so no-one outside of my friends group can read it. (though this does not stop pictures of people I tag being on display to their friends, or if they have an open profile, the whole world) If I want to send someone a reasonably private message on FB, I use the send message button. I only write on peoples wall if i want the world to know (very rare).

Also, I have my language set to English (Pirate), which makes it so much better than other social network sites. Where else can I go where a website calls my male friends mateys, my female friends wenches, and my hobbies 'Stuff you do when ye are out of rum.'

Engine Development / Re: AGS Wii Port?
Mon 18/05/2009 04:05:29
Actually, compiling ags games as Flash kind of brings up one of those ideas in my head. Why wouldn't it be possible to create a browser-playable ags game? Compiling for flash would cause issues with the well used right-mouse button in ags games, since it brings up the flash settings thingmabob. If you had an independant plugin that could read ags game files, you may have a way around this. I am not at all terribly familiar with what it would take to build a browser plug-in for AGS, but it would increase the available audience of your game.

Then again, thinking about it, it brings up many a problem. Not only would you have to write the plug-in for 3 os varieties, you'd also have to adapt it for the multitudes of browsers out there. Too big a job.

Wii sounds like a good idea, but the commercial problems, devkit, etc, as people have previously stated could be an issue.

iPhone is interesting. Yeah it could be an interesting platform. Only problem is you are competing against 10k+ apps. Many devs have stated the sheer number of apps available has made it almost impossible to make it a commercially viable platform.

Worst drivers? Old men who drive with their fedoras/hats still on their heads in the car - I don't believe they know where they really are.

I'm amazed at how "good" (I don't mean ironic, I mean that I don't know what other word to use) the French are at driving (well from what I've seen in Paris) - in one of the circular intersections, the road goes around one of the obleisks, there's no markings on the floor but there are like 5 lanes that connect in that crossing and about four tracks that go around the obelisk and all at once like a 100 cars go in and no one crashes...I just don't get that.
I've also seen they parallel park by pushing the cars they've parked in between so they have room...so it's anybody's guess if that makes them good drivers. ;D

Oh, yeah, in Tunisia I saw cab drivers (and other people too) drive like there's 3 lanes (in one direction) when there are clearly only 2 drawn. Not only do they do this all the time but they actually get mad and use the horn when somebody doesn't make room for 3 cars.

Uhh... have you ever been in the car with a French person? They are terrible scary drivers. If you can help it, never drive in france between 1 and 2 pm, as lunch is over, and the drivers are most likely driving having consumed at least a bottle of wine. Driving in France is an utterly terrifying experience, I have done it, and it was hellish. The roundabout at arc du triumph (sp?), which I'm guessing is the roundabout you were referring to, is one of a few places in the world a car insurer will not cover you. You are on your own buddy if you ever decide to drive onto that roundabout.

Even more incentive for us AGSers to be jerks to you.

Seriously, you posted an IDEA for a game you have, nothing more, didn't ask for anything, what do you expect.

Get a dictionary and spell check your post. You have a spelling error in you subject line for Jebus' sake! But hey, that doesn't matter, all that really matters is that you make a game. That is why most of us are here.

As you say you were promoting your idea, then why don't you start making your fantastic adventure game, get a couple of screenshots done, and then post in the GiP forum. But not before. Rules state you must have two screenshots of your magnum opus to post in said forum.

Personally, I think you have got yourself off to a very negative start in the ags community. Luckily, we don't hold grudges. To intergrate properly, how about contributing maturely and sensibly to some of the existing threads. Start making your game. When it's at least half done, then post an a game in production announcement about it. Don't be too ambitious with your first game though! 10 screens is plenty!

An afterthought, but imperitive! Please, please, please use grammer and formatting in your posts. We are creative people here, creative people who are generally decent writers. We like to read posts that have capital letters, commas, full stops and question marks. Don't be hasty and use too many exclaimation marks. We frown upon that here.

We welcome everyone who joins the American Girl Scouts. Please respect our forum and it's readability, and we will respect you.

Jebus Christ. A touchpad? You must really hate yourself. Go buy a mouse. I hear they are pretty cheap.

Hulu isn't available outside the US yet. But it is true that bandwidth limits do suck.

Here in Australia, broadband is pretty expensive unless you want to be stuck with a 2GB download limit. I would use that in 2 or 3 days of normal internet usage. I guess with a crappy infrastructure, free for all broadband without limits could really affect the broadband network, but to charge $130 (aus) for 100GB download is rather absurd.$70 or 80 for an unlimited download quota would be more sensible, with those who don't need that kind of bandwidth, charge less and set limits. It just infuriates me that I do not have the OPTION to get unlimited broadband in this country.

If you are only looking at regular websites, not viewing videos and whatnot, 5gb would be okay I guess. But it's still pretty paltry.

Ishmael, how can you not like GTA4? I thought that was impossible. For one thing, Rockstar are actually capable of releasing a game in 2 years. And secondly, I said a Rockstar Studio, not Rockstar North. And thirdly, I think Duke would work better as a well made 3rd person action game as opposed to a FPS. FPS' are so cliche these days. Its the humour and visual gags and stuff that makes duke awesome.

And to Stupot, I'm out of midgets, would you accept Nacho instead?!

It's hard to judge whether a new Duke game would have been GOOD, since we all view Duke3D through rose-coloured specs. Was it all that good with it's stolen dialog, cheap titty thrills and all that?

Maybe Take-2 will do the right thing and get one of the Rockstar studios to develop a new Duke Nukem game. In fact, any studio would be able to develop Duke Forever and get it completed a lot quicker than 3d Realms. I mean WTF were they doing for 11 years? 3D realms must have been one hell of a BAD company to not be able to make that game.

But think about it. A Duke game by Rockstar? That so has the potential to blow peoples minds. FOREVER!!!

General Discussion / Re: Twitter

I understand twitter perfectly. I would rather read a full news story rather than getting the 140-word cliff notes version. Yeah sure, if say on the off chance, a terrorist act happens no where near where you live andpeople were constantly updating, I could see it having some interest to me.

It's purely a selfish desire to use a twitter. Twitter is a silly name as well. Why not just call it brainpoop? It would make more sense that way.

Gen-Y are the most self-centered generation in existence. They had to reevaluate the Narcissism index to accommodate the absolute selfishness of my generation. It sickens me really. The reason really for this is most people born in 1st world countries in the last 30 years have never had to deal with situations that previous generations have. Most families are well off enough that there is little struggle for psysiological and safety needs. Since they are satisfied in those areas and rarely have to deal with them, they are likely to desire a higher need for esteem and social interaction. They need to feel better about themselves and loved by others. Pure selfishness.

This is why 99% of the content on twitter is pure brainpoop.

Discussion over. Want to wank your self-esteem? Tell your useless friends about your useless boring life every 20 minutes. Use twitter. Or Facebook status updates.

Back in my day if we wanted to know about our friends and what they were doing, we wall use the telephone device.

I blame twitter for all the problems in the world. Every single one of them.  :P (if you don't get that, you are obviously used to people, I mean Gen-Y's blaming others for everything that goes wrong. It is never their fault)

How is it keeping in contact with your friends? It's a gen-y narcacissitic flogometer to make you feel like your worthless lives are worth telling the world about. They are not.

Whilst I don't agree with the penalty of death for any reason, I have a hard time believing anyone could be so stupid to do this without knowing. Anyone travelling to other countries should know the appropriate laws and penalties for their destination country.

Drug smuggling is a serious crime. It is why they have posters in the airport. It is why they question you at check-in asking if someone has put anything in your bag or asked you to.

My bags have been searched by customs a few times. I know of others who have been searched. It really is a lucky dip, and I would never chance anything out of the ordinary being in my luggage. This is not out of fear, I would just never be so stupid. I got angry when a fellow adventurer 'smuggled' weed over the ferry to France in my car, just because if he were caught, I was driving the vehicle transporting drugs. Granted it was only a very small amount, but it could still get us into the shit.

What it really boils down to is if you are going to go outside your own country. USE YOUR BRAIN. Read up on the subject. Read a guidebook to the appropriate countries, they all have those kind of warnings.

I seriously doubt there is much the British Government can do. Their laws are in place as a deterrent to stop the flow of drugs to their country, or at least keep them to a minimum. And yes, I'm sure there are many who face a similar fate.

She will probably get life imprisonment. It is all up to the judge. Death is the highest possible penalty the judge can hand out, not the only one.

See, in my head, a kid named Robocop or Ghostbusters would be the coolest kid in school.

See now, I totally agree with that. You can only hope the other children in school have cool parents who will educate their children in classic films. Even 18 year olds at my UNI have not been educated unfortunately. They need to be shown the path to enlightenment that is 80's films.

I apparently have a thing for mirrors.

I dyed my hair ironically in response to a low quality score at work. It's ironic because the sudden change would imply that I care about the low score, while realistically I don't. And I've been happier over the last week than I've been for the last two years.

If you looked any more emo, I'd start to cry!

Hehehe, saw this a few days ago. Nice concept. It would probably work pretty well on a DS or iPhone or an android thingmabob.

There is the download page for it. http://unity3d.com/unity-web-player-2.x

that said, I don't see how to play it.

How did you find developing with Unity3d. I've heard it's pretty good and easy to use.

I simply draw far quicker and better using a trusty pencil. I tend to use a .3mm technical pencil for the roughs and use a 1mm for the big details. Sometimes I use regular pencils, but I like the cleaner look you get from a technical pencil. I will then scan the lineart into PS CS4 and if i'm pixelling the BG I will use a mouse, and if I'm painting I will use a tablet.

That said, I still like to experiment. I sometimes attempt to do a background in corel painter, although I've not perfected this technique. One thing I'd also like to try out is using Adobe Illustrator for tracing the lineart, then colour in photoshop. Hasn't happened yet, I just haven't had the time.

As for technique, if I'm being a good practicing artist, I will do a bunch of thumbnail sketches, use loads of reference and generally follow good practise. If I'm being lazy, I'll just see what the pencil creates. That said, I always have a solid idea of what I want and need from the background.

When it comes to characters, I will usually sprite the 4 views first. Then I will sketch the frames of the walkcycle (tablet) directly into layers, using a light blue 50% opacity (with variable opacity on the pen pressure)

As for timeframe, who knows. A sketch can take an hour or two, the colouring can take another 2 hours (pixel or wacom) It all depends on the details you put into the artwork.

So it really depends. I think the way that is most comfortable for most people to develop backgrounds is to pencil then scan then colour. Most people who learned to draw with a pencil and not a tablet that is.

The only advice I'd give to you is practice the fundamentals. Get a book called 'Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain'. GO through all the exercises. Check out some books and tutorials on drawing perspective. Photograph the hell out of the place you live, look particuarly for obscure details you can work into your drawings somehow. Its amazing what you can do with a lamp-post turned horizontally. It could be a detail for a building or a futuristic compound. Draw from life as much as possible.

Plan Plan Plan. Make sure you have a decent description of your sets. Make a list of things you need to include in a set and what you would like to include.

My old laptop would run most dx9 games (as long as they were shader model 2 or lower) okay, and it was integrated graphics, but ags d3d would not work.
