Well, nothing's stopping you from making a game about Thakbor except you, really!

I also agree that Davy Jones is rather annoying, and in my as-yet unmade game I planned to kill him yet again, as well as many of the more ridiculous RoN characters.

Well I do agree with you there somewhat. I'm working on a game and I'm not allowed to work on anything but since I'll get distracted and put it 'on hold'... indefinitly.

And DC is already making one, so hooray. I hope it features Guido.

Speaking of which, if Jesus RON ever gets released, it will heavily feature Guido and his nude beach. Hooray.

Oh, and to RI, Davy's death was a great thing. It did go against the ground rules of RON in a way (although I'm pretty sure Yahtzee gave his consent to Davy's death), it made it more like a soap opera (sort of, his death (the Mostly version) was a bit outrageous), which was the original intent of Gravity when he proposed the idea (which was somewhat taken off track by Yahtzee et al).

On a direction forward for RON, I like the idea of the updated sprites and backgrounds. What I've seen by Krysis and RI and others is a vast improvement, but as to updating the older RON games, I don't really see much point, apart from to maybe make them compatible with XP, Vista and the forthcoming 7. As for 'deluxe' versions with extended content, I'm not really sure it is worth the effort (although I suppose if you are completly rescripting a game, there would be no problem adding extra content.)

Perhaps what is needed is a RON reboot. There have been several attempts in the past to create a RON 2.0, one I know of was several high-profile AGSers collaborating to create a space station type RON. That's not the kind of thing I am thinking of though. Perhaps a re-working of major locations, nicer graphics (though still relatively simple so not to turn-off those creators who's asset creation ability is not amazing. Something like the 'Krysis' style. Locations such as the Town square should be redesigned, as I've always found it strange that the Jones' house in in the bloody town square. That doesn't really make much sense, as apart from the apartments, it should be a commercial area (as it would be in any town square, the only houses would be above shops, which would make them flats. The core locations were created in the space of maybe 5 days.

I'd like to see a RON committee formed, to set the rules for the reboot, create new character profiles, give some characters a bit more of a backstory. I know it's an open project, but simple things make it alot better for everyone. And before any RON game is released, the committee should be part of the beta test, and it should be 'approved'. If some details are incorrect, they would be noted by the committee. If a character acts 'out of character', it should be noted by the testing committee and fixed, or explained in the game why this character did this through dialog or something. It's late and I'm rambling, but I've though quite a bit about this in the last few days.

It would be a nice thing to see RON return bigger and better than ever. And I think by setting a few new rules, give it a bit of a reboot, keep the old games naturally, but have them in a different section of the website.

Things that would also be useful, a detailed streetmap of RON, and something like a 'guidebook' entry of RON, detailing the history, backstory, sights, places to stay, make it seem authentic (I did both of these with the series a long time ago on paper, it was a mess due to the sort of inconsistancies, but unfortunatly do not have it anymore). Something like this would be very useful to new authors, as they can choose an 'unused' location on the streetmap and create new rooms, not just put them anywhere. It would definatly be a big collaborative effort to create such a thing, but it can be done.

Anyway, that's my ideas and input for now. Aww, I feel all nostalgic now, this reminds me of the thread that created RON. :)

QuoteAnd please. No more games with Davy Jones as the main character. He can be so pathetic angsty emo like.

Angsty emo-like?  I've never found the character to exhibit those traits.  Of course, given the unlimited freedom, someone could make a game where Griff runs around in a giant bear costume and ends up sitting on shelves in New York.

Umm... Well I guess that's more the way I see him.

Anyway, he should have stayed dead and has gotten far more attention than he really should have. And his girlfriend certainly has him under the thumb. Seriously alot of other good characters to utilise out there. The Baron for instance? He needs to be showcased in a game in his full evilness. Thakbor would also be a great player character. Perhaps a Thakbor/Thakbor's Mum Quest where you can control both of them.

Due to the open-ness of the whole Universe, there are a lot of very weak characters as well, along with games. There are alot of RON games out there, with only a few that I'd personally recommend.

I present some choice meaty chunks:

Lunchtime of the Damned - First game in the series. Obviously dates the most in terms of graphics, but sets the tone to come. A remake is being considered, and some awesome backgrounds have been made avaliable. Just waiting for someone to pick up the ball and do something with them.

The Postman only dies Once - The first Max Griff game, and Dave Gilbert's second.

Cabbages and Kings - Along with Kittens and Cacti and Apocalypse Meow, these make up the Night of the Kittens series. A possessed army of kittens running amok? Yes please.

The First Stitch - First part of Dylan Downing's Tapestry series (continued in The Unravelling and Rend). More serious in tone that the others, but solid games that have benefitted from being recompiled with the new resources.

The Chef - The game featured on the Bytejacker segment. Play it purely for the win that is Guido. NUDISTS OF TEH WORLD UNITE.

Play those and you'll have a pretty good idea what sort of excellence can be done with RON.

You forgot to mention the I Spy's

I Spy http://ron.the-underdogs.info/downloads/games/ispyrel3.zip

I Spy 2 http://ron.the-underdogs.info/downloads/games/ispyii.zip

III Spy http://ron.the-underdogs.info/downloads/games/IIISpy.zip

Dead man's political party is a great game as well. http://ron.the-underdogs.info/downloads/games/DMPP.zip

And please. No more games with Davy Jones as the main character. He can be so pathetic angsty emo like.

What?!?!

Is anyone as confused as I am?

Finish Time Out! And maybe then I'll finish my Jesus Ron game.

Hey, That's a pretty good find. I didn't even realise Dave did that. Dave did talk briefly about reality on the norm in the Bytejacker episode he appeared in along side Ivy and Grundy, but not to the depths that he did here.

It's a shame the thread that created RotN was never archived. It would be great to look back at, see the people who really created RotN.

Ahh, that book. I've read it. Quite a good read really. I'm not the only one who has read it. Many men have read it. So have many women. So keep in mind some of the so called 'tricks' may not work anymore.

I think a positive thing this book can give to sexually frustrated guys is a little thing called confidence. A little goes a long way. If you go up to a woman and believe in your mind you will never have any hope in hell of 'pulling' her, then there is no way in hell you will have that chance, because you are not confident in yourself.

I think there are 3 basic things you need to meet women. Number one is confidence. Number two is the ability to talk without shite coming out of your mouth, this includes talking about what she likes, and not talking about yourself most of the time. Also finding something you both like to talk about. Thats a good one. Number three is to dress well. You don't have to go all suit and tie, but at least dress reasonable. Although you can still 'pick-up' wearing 3 year old 'well-worn' converse shoes and get away with it.

Summing up, just feel good about yourself. The book is a great read, and it may give you tips, but don't use the terminology, don't get involved in that sleazy scene. Just be you, but a more confident and well dressed you.

Your best bet is around 2 months before or 4 days before. (but that is pure luck waiting that long) I'm not sure becuase of the timing of it, but it should be around £450-500. And in my experience, American always seem to be the cheapest airline. Yes they have some pretty unattractive and rude flight attendants as well. But who cares when you save about £100?
#469
No-one mentioned them because they are full of contrived plot devices and are arse-loosingly crap games.

Oh man, that's beautiful, it's just I get an error as well. After I've started a game, during the herbert west cutscene at the start. :( I'll try again in a bit and see if it does the same thing, and if so, I'll post the error msg.
#472
If they meant the old version, then why would they say new version?

Anyway, probably downloaded a beta. If you can't figure out how to unzip a zip file, then you probably shouldn't be playing around with volitile beta software.

Yes I did notice last night that you had indeed re-posted the game, and kudos to you for it.

I think the game rating panel is flawed though. To give such a quality game as ultimerr 1 blue cup is a sin. A SIN!!! DGMacphee poured his heart and soul into that game when most of you were still wearing diapers, or at least not even a member of ags. So boo to you. :P

I jest.
#474
It has come to my attention that some game developers are removing their games after harsh criticism from other ags users and game players.

Now some people do this for pure infantile reasons, and some do it due to offensive comments from others. I don't like the way this is going. I created the game that inspired the p3n1sh award. Just ask DGMacphee. It received harsh critism from some users, and it received praise in its highest form (someone else created a remake, god knows why, Eric made a fan sprite). Would I consider removing it? No. It's legacy will remain forever, not that I'm proud of it (I sometimes wish it would just die), but it is still my work. I made the game for me and a friend (who created said character in biology class). Don't listen to people. Make games for you primarily, then the audience. You are all creatives, and you deserve to have your work praised and criticised.

Look at modern art for god sakes. I say a guy in a bear suit is not art, yet others say it is. Still won the Turner Prize didn't it.

Actually CJ, they were Irish Car Bombs. And I still won.

Roberta Williams looks and sounds like a 12 year old girl.

I enjoyed the question and the answers! Hooray for all involved! Boo to erin for losing whatever drinking game was being drunk

Funfact: today I received the following text message from my 13-year-old brother:

Erin i see you were last in a drinking game on the internet (',') (lolcat)!

Um...I guess I'm setting a good example?

I think I won the drinking game. Every single time.

Lovely graphics, (although the mixture between low and hi-res is a bit confusing, and some look sort of unfinished.)
Complicated GUI, I'm just a bit confused as to why you had to overcomplicate things.

That said, I like it and I will continue to play it. Great style you got going there.

I blame Francisco. That video should never have been released!!!

Is there anything in particular you did Ildu? I run it, and main.exe crashes. I am running vista but I have tried compatibility mode.

There is no troubleshooting that I can find for this demo. I have a pretty basic, non gamer, laptop. But it has a gig of ram and 2.ghz core duo so i dont see why it isnt running.

:(

I have exactly the same problem.
