I know a joke about Sussex...

You never did say that joke Lionmonkey... what was it?

I hate it and it violates animal rights, so better not.

General Discussion / AGS tips.
Sun 04/05/2008 10:54:03
I feel like making an introduction writing first.

I've noticed, that some of you, people say that there's too many useless, bandwidth-wasting threads. So I wanted to make something usefull
I've also noticed that many people, who are new to AGS ask simply for tips, without any concrete problems. So, why don't we help some people let us a play a great game?

So, this thread willing to contain just tips, that help in any aspect of AGS creating process, from story creating to srite drawing to scripting. This may become like the next Bible, where when you don't know, what to do, you just open a random page and it helps you to solve the problem. In order to keep it clean and helpful, I'd like to set up a couple of rules:

- Post only, if you've got at least some AGS experience and if that tip has really helped you.
- Post one, most helpful tip, you can think of in the moment, that haven't been posted yet.
- Keep it short, but understandable.
- Post the tip in bold. Add any comments in normal font.

I'll post a fine example under the seven Yen signs.

Coffee and Coca-Cola are your friends.
Caffeine really helps getting new ideas. It won't help you, if you use it too much, though. Your organism needs to be shocked by it. Oh, and mixing Coffe and Cola is a bad, bad idea.

I don't think, it's about greed or season number. IT's about what inspires author. If there's alot of funny stuffy, he/she sees around him/herself, the project maces a success. If there's none, or very little of it, then the author has to think about  something him/herself, turning it into a hard-working process, which gradually becomes frustrating and the author tries to finish it as fast as possible. Quality loses then.

After some continious nail eating, I felt a strange feeling in my head. I remembered something. Something, that happened before I got into the White Building. A gray box. That's all. Just a gray box. I need to find it. It may contain answers! But how do I get out of this little room? It's enclosed. I've got no idea, how I got here. Just like anyhing that happens after a white flash. But I've gotta get out of here! There is only one way. I must quench my lust for meat!

SetMusicMasterVolume() didn't seem to do anything, but SetMusicVolume() did, thanks. I find it really annoying to adjust volume of your speakers every time, you launch a game, so I wanted my game not to have this flaw.

Still looking how to solve the "screech" problem. The file plays totally ok in Media Player Classic, in Windows Media Player you can hear a short click before the track starts again if you set it to automatically repeat. Also, after some time, I've noticed that the "screech" actualy sounds after about 1 sec of music. Still got no idea, why it exists, I mean, it's between two same patterns.

 AGS version is 2.72.

I wanted some music to be playing when player launches the game, so I've put an mp3 file, titled "Music0" in the "Music" folder. I can hear it when I launch the game, but there are two problems with it.

First one is that I always hear a "screech" before the actual music starts playing. You know, like the sound when someone uses a badly set up microphone.

The second one is that the volume is too low. I've tryed solving it with
"PlayAmbientSound (1, 1, 200, 0, 0)", but it didn't affect the volume.

Please give some help. Also, I'd like to know, what is the best music format for AGS?

"The people around looked worried, althought they didn't notice me, sticking to the ceiling. The Big Man said "Pretzel". Then "Spaghetti". I started eating my fingernals, but they were unable to quench the raising hunger. I desired food."

Name: Unknown, but guards call me Dafty.
Age: Unknown, maybe 20-30.
Height:179.8 cm, at least that's what my card says.
Weight: 53 kg, last time they checked it.
Face: I haven't seen my face for as long as I can remember. Maybe that's because I'm afraid of mirrors. Maybe, because they had none.
Hair: None, they constantly shave it.
Build: They didn't feed me much, so my body is pretty scrawny and fleshless. Skin is so pale, I was able to hide in a wall once. When they found me, they hit me.
Clothes: White pants. The white shirts sleeves are too long and unproportial, like they've been torn.
Items: Nothing, except for Mr.Happy.
Personality:Sometimes I'm very very happy. Sometimes I'm very very worried. And sometimes I see a big white flash and then there's something red everywhere. I don't like it. It makes me very very worred.
History: They have kept me in the White Building for a very long time. Then there was a fire alarm. Then I was free. Then I was in a big city. Then there was a white flash. Now I am in a small room with some other people.

Congratulations, you won a free useless rock! Lucky you!

I wish, sun was black.

Which starts right after you are put into cryogenic suspension, thus making you miss all the fun and awake in the far future completely alone.

I wish, DVDs wouldn't get scratches so easily.

By commiting the terrible act of double-post!

I wish, I stopped bleeding all the time.

And get no fun, since there's no consequences.

I wish, I knew, what color my hair is.

I somehow like The Civilization (yep, the once the bestest game ever game).

Metal Gear Solid 2: Substance intro is awesome.

Also, in case it counts, the first fight in Beyond Good and Evil is nice in the middle, when the game goes into slow-mo simultaneously with the music changing.

Thankfully, the fish had a time machine and upon learning, that you're going to kill it, the fish travelled into far past, when your mom was pregnant, magically teleported into her womb and ate you, which leads to you never being born, never killing the fish, and never posting this stupid wish. Or does it?

I wish, I stopped using the deus ex machina.

Too bad, you're afraid of heights.
I wish, I didn't post this.

Only in order to commit a suicide after realising the horrible truth.
I wish, I had a real life.
