So, if I've counted correctly:

the winner is...(insert drum roll here)... Krysis with whopping 20 votes,

hard on his heels we have Anym with 16 votes

and a good 3rd place goes to gameboy with 9 votes

runners up are:
Privateer Pudding with 5 votes
Clip and Yarooze with each 1 vote

As winner Krysis may collect his very own, original Mars Cafe Badge for free, yes Nogmorzes and Fooblobs you sensed correctly with your versatile organs, for free!!!

OK, let the voting commence:

Best Idea: Anym (has some nice touches with the toilets, picture etc...)

Best Functionality: Anym (I can just imagine some aliens sitting there, and there a things for a character to do, like going to the toilet...)

Best Design: Krysis (for me it has to be, it's just so cubistically cool!)

Best Technique: gameboy (Nice simple shading and high-lighting.)

So, it's the 26th (at least where I am), which means there's only a day or so to go. (Wow, that sentence rolls of the tongue!)
Although we already have numerous and great entries, how about you, yeah YOU participating too before this competition closes!

@Anym: I especially bought some infra-red goggles, just to have a look at that floor of yours, but my monitor doesn't seem to support infra-red, darn!

Here's my super lo-res, super stupid orc guard:

Yeah robots, one can never have enough robots!

And those a truely nice robots, but I think you should go up a notch with the contrast.
I mean those are low-res sprites and for one to really appreciate the fine details they need to be more contrasted. Put them on a BG and you'll see what I mean. This is always a good way to see if your sprites work.

Hope to see some really cool updates and a BG!

Go robots, go robots...

I really like the house, and I think it deserves more detail!
You put so much effort in the side bricks and windows etc. that now I think the front wall looks a bit empty. You should try and add some more details here and there...

I made a little paintover for some ideas:

oh yeah, I lowered the fence a bit, because I thought it looked strange the top ending exactly with the back wall. I also gave it a lower bar.
I also put the white street lines into perspective, it's just a pixel here and there, but I think it makes all the difference!

Keep up the superb work!

I see the problem and let me say. you've got a nice simple and clean character there!
But you should either tell your friend to keep his BGs as simple as your style:
- keep away from the blur tool
- don't use anti-alised brushes
Or you could use his BG as a reference and paint your own more suited to your style!

Just a few more pointers concerning the BG:
- you should lose detail towards the background
- give the colours a tinge of blue the closer you get to the horizon
- give the composition another thought: where are mountains in the backgroung? Where does the beach go in the left area?

I made a fairly quick paintover.
It's not very clean and lacks detail, but it should give you the general idea of what I mean:

Hope I could help!

I really like your latest edit:
His face is great in it's simplicity!
His stance is much better now.

The crits:
His legs are way too skinny and his feet are too small.
I don't like dithering in such small sprites, but that's maybe just personal preference.

Here's a paintover:

I kept the sprite as true to yours as possible, hope it helps.

Yeah, interior views would be very appreciated!
Actually that's what I had in mind, when I thought of the topic:
A place where space travellers could lounge about in!

Outside views are welcome aswell, of course, but should put emphasis on the diner and not the surroundings.

Keep'em coming in...

So here goes the new one:

Since we're all doing so good over at the Sprite Jam let's give all those great critters a place to ooze, globber, vapour or just glide about in:

The Mars Cafe
[/b][/size]

I would like to see a nice spacy (in all meanings of the term) alien cafe or diner where denizen of all species find a comfy place to seat their bostriebees and glogboosts and get their kind of food and drink (maybe even from vending machines).

There are no restrictions in size or color.

The voting categories:

Best Idea
Best Functionality
Best Design
Best Technique

Let the blitzing commence:

...and remember to buy your very own Mars Cafe badge: !!!

Wow!
Cheez... what else is there to say but THANKS!

Sorry for being so late, but I've been away over easter.
I'll get the next one started right away!

now let's see how this works...

Meet Gastrouboos:
He is a male Bowelbouboos, a lethargical race that evolved in the primordial methan-filled sludge of Purge VI. The first pseudo-life to leave the swamps were sludge bubbles filled with (of course) methane and other organic components. Their means of propulsion came from a burst of gas giving them some form of nondirectional mobility. Early on in the developement of higher organisms cousin nature saw the necessity of long necks to prevent suffication from their own emissions. This directly led to co-evolving a telescope-like finger to gather food from the ground without having to bend down.

Oh, and Gastrouboos is wearing his nylon Nadoos around his neck for decencys sake since it's not mating season.

Maybe I'll find the time to animate him... That'll be interesting! ;)

EDIT: gave him some spacy accessories!
#254
Here's my shot at it:
Please excuse the totally zany perspective.

I wanted to cram it with more details but unfortunatly lacked the time!
Oh well...

EDIT: just found time to give it another go; maybe I find some more before this Blitz closes!

I second Nikolas concerning the first BG! The 2nd one uses far to much red.

I also think you need to tone down the fields and mountains in the background to give them some distance.

The detailing of the gras in the foreground is to big in comparison to the surroundings.
You should use less detail the further the field reaches.

Oops, I hope I made that last point clear enough... but maybe you should look into the scaling of this BG in general.

Don't get me wrong here, I think you've really got something going with that BG in a cartoony fairytale kind of way!

I'm not quite sure about the moustache bit of the beard (I hope I'm interpreting this correctly), it still looks a bit like a mouth.
Nontheless your sprite is still really good, so I tried to keep as true to it as possible and pushed just a few pixels here and there to define some forms better: the collar, lapels, knees.
I also thought the black to be a tad to harsh and changed it to a dark brown.

I hope this works for you!

I think you've got a really nice lo-res sprite there!
The only thing I'd suggest is to have less straight lines:

Oh yeah, I changed some of the colours!

Hi, I'm new to this, so please be be gentle to my fragile self-esteem! ;)

Here it goes:
A star is born every minute!

Edit: Damn, I forgot about that Spongebob and his cronies! I hope my entry doesn't resemble Patrik too much and still counts. Not that it would do any difference anyhow seeing that funtastic seahorse!

maybe you could try something like this for more detail:

besides the evident changes I just pushed a few pixels in his face to make his features clearer and to give him some ears of sorts. I also made his fists and boots bigger and reduced the colours:

11 colours

some changes may be for better or worse, but I hope it helps!

2x

and 9 colours
