since a lot of people don't mind or want a extension then this background blitz will be extended until 29th december

Such awesome news! Now I MUST get mine finished!

I love the last two rooms except for:

The view outside the window suddenly looks a lot more mundane than the other "uber city" Blade Runner look before outside the window of the living room.

I'm kinda wondering if this is a flashback scene or if we are in a completely different city, otherwise it just doesn't match up for me.

EDIT: Also the whole no outlines thing is certainly working!

The question isn't:
"Why is this game so violent?"

It's
"Why is this game so violent?"

This is a very wonderful thing you have just said! I'm totally gonna steal this the next time this topic comes up with my movie geek mates when we are discussing violence in films and pretend it's mine (just kidding...I always credit my sources)

This looks like an amazing way to bring your painted art to life...

I will be checking this out for sure!

Some thoughts....

Spoiler
I can't think of an "article" in king, but if you read it as article "inking" then it could refer to a writer or journalist of some kind.

"Alien stopping ass-type" has me stumped though.  The obvious alien stopper is Ripley, played by Sigourney Weaver.  I was thinking that she might run some sort of donkey sanctuary and have a favourite type, but she appears to be a city-girl through and through. :~(

So.... based on raw word-count and vague reference to someone who write's articles, I'm going to guess critic's lounge.

Spoiler
I also thought of Ripley and donkeys and mules (that sounds weird after I wrote it) but then I thought there is another famous alien stopper by the name of Zak McKracken, but still couldn't get anything to fit right: Zakbum....Bumzak...Butzak...etc

As for king and article: I tried fitting the article "the" into "king" many ways as the letter count matches, but couldn't make anything work there either...

... art is my vomit ...

THAT! That right there!!!

THAT IS AWESOME!!!

I'm being very serious! That is the pain of creativity that every artist tries to express...

Now I get glib:

Just never reverse that statement and you will do great with all your projects (too many artists have gone that path already)...

I just googled ass-type to no practical avail.  Are we talking "cherry round" here or "inverted heart"? :=

Cassie, that is such a beautiful reindeer! Could you use [ imgzoom] [ /imgzoom] so we can see the pixel detail (or even just the pixel tail 8-) ) a little closer up?

I might have one:

Scanning the engine of a TIE Fighter: Enjoyable at first (8)

I've got it I think, but can't 100% explain it.
Spoiler
Function
'FUN' = enjoyable, and comes 'at first'
'CT' - CT scan
'ION' - ??? (Not sure what this has to do with TIE fighters.
I'm guessing 'engine' was a clue that it was AGS-related

Yup...you got it alright. Well done!

And the bit you weren't sure about:

Spoiler
TIE stands for "Twin Ion Engines" ;)

Next please!

I think it also comes back to how you yourself rate the "success" of your game:

If you rate it in download numbers/chatter on other sites/features on game sites etc. then gore will never be a downside. Even negative articles about the violence in the game are going to increase your game's audience as people download it out of curiosity. And I'm not trying to say that this is a bad thing: Of course everyone wants their game to reach as large an audience as possible.

Or do you rate success as the game achieving what you wanted it to? Let's look at two of the most viral and popular horror games of recent times: "Five Nights At Freddy's" and "Slender":

Are they "good" games? Naw, not really: They are fairly brainless storywise and rely on the same repetitive jump-scares over and over. Which is exactly what the makers aimed for. Do they do the job of scaring the player? Yes, and they do it quite well! Does the person who downloaded them feel that they got what they came for after playing: Yes, they do! So in this way these two one-trick-pony games are the perfect vision of what the makers intended: Not an easy thing to pull off in any genre.

So, if you are making a game about convicts killing each other on an island based on a very gory movie, you should expect that a lot of your downloads will be from people who want to play a very gory game about convicts killing each other on an island. (I know....I know...I'm just kinda insightful that way... 8-) )

If they get a game where you have to put a pully in the middle of a rubber chicken, or there is a scene where two of the convicts sit down on a park bench and talk about their friendship, or whatever, then your audience is going to just scratch their collective head.

BUT: Only make it if it is what you feel compelled to make. The reason why "Five Nights At Freddy's" and "Slender" were so good at what they set out to do was because the makers poured so much love, effort, and attention into achieving that goal. The reason why Michael Bay movies are complete shite is because he is not ashamed to bypass all of that work, plug 90% of the budget into CGI effects, and churn out another worthless movie which pisses off even the people who pretty much knew what they were in for when they bought the ticket. And then he laughs all the way to the bank...

Out of time here, and I kinda got a bit lost on my point, but hopefully there is some sense somewhere in this post...

As we have so many WiPs being posted and are hitting such a busy time of the year for everyone I would like to propose an extention to the deadline.

The problem is that I doubt extending any time from now until Christmas will help out many people. It's just too busy a time for most.

Is it too long an extention until Dec 28th or 29th? This still give people a good 3-4 days after Christmas to finish up (including myself).

It just seems a shame that a contest with a theme that generated so much interest would end with mostly unfinished works because of the time of year.

What does everyone (and especially the contest host) think?

What you are suggesting is certainly possible. I personally would still do it the simple way with seperate functions for each combination (and each with a "//egg + nest = egg in nest" kind of notation for easy script searching).

But I guess if you have a huge number of possible combinations and outcomes, like 50 or 100 or more then building an array which works like a map or flowchart to handle it all is a smart way to go.

As for the actual coding suggestions I will let someone else tackle that daunting task ;)

I love the shades opening animation but nothing changes with the rest of the room's shading before-during-after opening the blinds, making it kind of a "this region only" effect instead of an effect that could convince the player that they are fully in the world.

Also, I know how hard it is to do all of that extra animation and then you have the whole issues where if it's not continued throughout the rest of the game thing, increasing your headaches...So please forgive this comment if you just want to move forward with your story instead of doing possibly useless animation on the early stages and then having everyone complain that the same effects were not consistant with the rest of the game...
