General Discussion / Re: The nintendo Wii

"If you want a console buy the 360 its cheaper than the ps3, is easier to program for and already has a head start (and if you want you can even make your own games for it since microsoft released the software suite to the public) although you could  be smart and just get a computer."

The ease of programming has nothing to do with a consoles quality, and.. remember the PSone yaroze game making kit? Boy was that ever popular! (Note sarcasm)

Is the 360 cheaper though? I could be wrong, but someone told me that there will be an upgrade for the 360, a blueray drive. Is this correct? If so, then no doubt blue-ray only games will be released virtually forcing the gamer to cough up. Sorry if that fact is wrong. I'm going to look it up now!

EDIT: Perhaps false, but there are rumours of other upgrades..

I have no interest in Nintendo's wee. I never have been into Nintendo stuff, ever. But that doesn't mean I want them to disappear. Competition with companies is good for us.

Look at the PC market, the choices have become rather limited for the basic home user. Ack! I even called it a "PC market"! Damn me!!! The COMPUTER market! Sigh..

Oh, I never got an Xbox 360 either, as my Xbox lasted me about a year until the exclusives dried up and the machine doesn't work sometimes. Comapre that to my old "grandad" PS2 that still works fine! (Touch wood)

EDIT: Steel Drummer, there are tons of PS2 exclusives. the last game I got was Kingdom hearts 2. You just aren't looking very hard now are you?

I don't mind death in an adventure game if it made a checkpoint just before you encountered the danger so you get another chance without having had the premonition to save the game before hand. Sure it takes away some suspense that you will lose the game, but so what. I am so glad that many platform-ish games have abandoned the lives system quite frankly, as I now have a chance of actually playing through to the end, and feeling like I got my money's worth.

I could never get past the second level of ghosts and goblins, so I may as well have found a playable demo for cheaper.

(at the moment it's in shorthand and illegible "blake-speak". ;D

You know shorthand??!! Or is it really just text message shortening? 'Cos shorthand is an impressive thing to learn!

Hmm. Although I recall you're no graphics master, people will want to see an example of the cartoon before giving you voices.

Interesting sounding characters!  :)

I prefer having the character clickable, because it's very frustrating for me to have to click through the character to something I can't see that is behind.

Whether the character was clickable or not you'd be frustrated then? I gather you move them out of the way all the time. Thing is though, I've played some AGS games where I'm clearly NOT clicking on the sprite but the detection system thinks I am.

Helm, I like having no risk in adventure games. For me it's a change in pace. I can have a drink and a snack while I play without fear I'm going to die if I let go of the mouse for a second.

Forget mine then, I still say the eyes are too cute!

Guybrush isn't supposed to make you go "Awww!"  :P

Woah that's great!

Is his nose supposed to be that big?

I don't have much to say being an amateur, just had to say "woah!" :)

Hmm the trousers.. something wrong there people? Can't put my finger on it..

For me, the lighter bits in his hair don't look like the right colour? Am I right people?

People?

TerranRich is correct, I was hovering my mouse over underlined things mistaking them for links.

Hmm a lot of writing and not much in the way of pics. Most people are going to be put off straight away by having a page of almost pure text, if you want my opinion.

Keep it up, you'll improve!
#1970
No TerranRich, as it gets on my nerves when a main character is clickable, as they get in the way when I'm trying to click on something near them, and I end up hearing the same damn phrases over and over again! So your idea is good, but perhaps executed in another way, please!

Back to topic more so:

Reminds me of something in my own game. I had a certain solution in mind for getting rid of this dog, and I'd put dog food in the area. The solution had nothing to do with the dog food, but I realised everyone is going to try using it on the dog, so I made a whole "cutscene" (if you will) where the EGO tries to use the dog food and fails, AND gives good reason as to why the dog won't eat it.

Deus Ex is a good example where you can kill whoever you want, excpet you can't kill certain main characters. And that's totally understandable. To do that, you'd need adaptable AI to cope with the loss of key characters that were integral to the plot. Or you might end up with a game where there's nobody left alive and theres nothing left to do in the game!

Chuck Norris is what makes this thread worthwhile!

Although I dig Jet Li more for general kickass-ness.

When you say drunk Yoda man.. he's not drunk as i said, but he's pretty stupid. And you did call his eyes so!   ;)

Thanks! I love what Penguin did with some of the changes there! Great!

I tried to redraw most of it myself, so I learn and don't just copy and paste, but I did copy the side shoulder as I was struggling with it.

Oh dear the eyebrows have gone! Guess it looked good on paper, not on PC..

EDIT: Oh, I also made his trouser leg normal, so it's easier for me to animate! At least, that was the thinking behind it.

EDIT EDIT:
Thanks Eddie!

Vict0r gave me some crit on MSN, so I've changed.. his back lowered again just a teeny bit! Feet stance changed. Fingers lengthened. Made his trouser plasters a more "plaster" colour.

I want him to look relaxed and lazy. How should i change his posture?

..and is my sprite actually any good? Maybe I shouldn't bother..  :-\

Apparently I even broke my sunglasses, which is a shame because you can't get ones like these anymore.

I wonder why you can't get them anymore..  :P  :)

I'm pretty sure that's a mask, and if it is, nobody wears masks by strapping it around their lower neck like that! At first though, I too thought it was a beard. Hmm..

Surely it would be like this?

Righty then, he's a crazy wacky loon! Not drunk at all...

Clown nose??!! Oh dear.. no it's there for two reasons:

1)It's cute.

2)He's a cartoon.

I didn't want just a normal guy. Perhaps If I changed the colour of the nose? Put some nostrils on it?

I'll see if he looks better with the colour changes you suggested, thanks!

Come on people, crit me!

Critics' Lounge / James Zing! (A sprite)
Wed 04/10/2006 18:32:26
Okay, here is a character called James Zing that I may or may not use for a game.

I originally created him when I was about 8 years old, although I've made a few changes to him.

What do you think?

Now, I don't want to put blending colours and any shadows on him as that means extra time animating! What I'm looking for are any suggestions for his clothes and the colours. And anything you think could be improved.

Thanks!

EDIT: Is this a better colour scheme?

Which in turn makes the player afraid to experiment and try anything?

Which in turn, makes them realise they can save the game prior to doing something that will risk getting an idiot point, so they spend the whole game interupting play to save it just incase?

Shadow of memories was great! I had no inclination that it was designed by any particular gender, after all I tend to think of games as made by a whole team of developers rather than saying "Charles Cecil made this!".

I like how in Fable my man went to marry this girl, and a person I know who is gay made their man marry a guy. That's so cool! Then on my second go I made my bloke gay because it's something I hadn't done in the game yet! (He married the teacher even though the kids were scared of him)
