Hints & Tips / Spellbound
Fri 28/11/2003 20:38:10
I'm stuck at the beginning. I have used the bullet with the key-hole but I can't get it to blast off. I have noticed the symbol on the door-knob and I know that you have to use that spellstone thing but the symbol isn't on the stone so I can't use magic. What should I do?

Here is my first finished game and my entry for this month MAGS Wizardhood. This game is about Murphy a 15-year old lad who recently have finished the trials of Wizards and become a wizard. While he goes to town he saves a girl named Emilia and Murphy's master Melvin and John Elmore, the leader of the Wizard Council, gets surprised by Murphy's heroic act that they give him a special mission: To get back the Black Crystal from the evil wizard Agrahgorth.

Here are the screenshots. Some of the colors on the screenshots are not right since I had transform them from bmp to gif in order to use the quick upload.

Here is the link to download the game:

Beginners' Technical Questions / Scaling
Sat 22/11/2003 21:04:34
I have a bit of a problem in my game. At the end of the game when some characters comes from rooms with other kind of scaling, they are bigger than the main-character. I think the reason for it could be that the room which will end the game doesn't have any walkable areas (the reason for not to have walkable areas is for a special thing which I won't tell because it's a surprise). How can you change the scaling of a character? Is there a commando for changing the scale size of the characters?

I have a little problem with playing the music. No matter how I play the music, the MIDI songs won't play. I have tried rename them into music1.mid or MUSIC1.MID. I even have tried rebuild VOX files but the music won't play. Other sounds works well, do you guys have any idea what's wrong?

Hey guys! I have a little bit of a problem. I'm writing a fantasy novel in two parts called The Legend of the Togastone. I'm done with the first book of two and it's under correcting before atempting to publish it. Here is the problem: My sister and her boyfriend think the name Ghardaf (pronounces Gar-Dah-f [Gar pronounes like garlic]) is too similiar to Gandalf from The Lord of the Rings. They believe that fantasy fans will find that and it maybe turns out bad but I like the name so much that I don't have the heart to chage the name. Dad have told me that if a bookprinter company sees the similiars the might not like it and doesn't publish it. Now I don't know what to do and I want to make the book. Please, help me out of this dilema and say what you think about this!

Critics' Lounge / Hotel kitchen
Sat 20/09/2003 18:59:30
I'm still working on my first big game Hawaiian Treasure and I hope to release a demo before the end of the year. Anyway, here is a background which will appear in the demo. It's the kitchen of a cozy, quite big hawaiian vacation hotel. I would like some critics and opinions of how to make this even better.

I haven't done any shading yet but I have started to make some details for it (like the knives, the cutboard, the sink and the dish-washer in the corner). If you wonder what's the big grey thing is I can tell you that it's a big oven (even if you can't tell because it shows the behind in front of the "camera"/screen) and the white door is a giant fridge and freezer rooms for food storage. For this I use two programs for different abilties; Adobe Photoshop for correct size and wide viraity of colors, and Paint for copy/cut/paste without layer problems.

Advanced Technical Forum / Save/load thing
Thu 28/08/2003 14:27:34
I would like to make a Save & Load system that works like Night of the Hermit; you click on slots you save and you can see the previously saved slot as a pic over the situation where you last saved. But I don't know how to do such thing. And you can bring up that menu by tapping F1 button.

Does anyone know how to do that or something similar? Maybe a turitoal?

NOTE: I don't use the regular AGS/Sierra GUI but the SCUMM/Lucas Arts GUI. Why? Two reasons. 1: Too many AGS games have that. 2: I prefer SCUMM system because the Lucas Arts games where the first adventure games.

Anyway, thanks in advice.

Hints & Tips / Need help with Apprentice.

I'm stuck. I have put the blanket and the saddle on the horse but the master wizard won't ride away. Have I missed something.

Also, how do get the club and the cucumber sandwhich from that highwaywoman?

And what should I do first with the milk? I tried to use it with the couldron and the cow but it won't work.

It might sound weird and nuts but I have been thinking of this, which items haven't been used EVER in a adventure game... at least not yet. Here is my list of stuff nobody haven't been used in a adventure game that I know. Correct me if I'm wrong at a part.

A jojo
A skunk (note: the black cat you get in Day of the Tentacle doesn't count as a skunk)
A plastic goose with a rope on the top (Just kidding!)
A pen-eraser
A comic-book
A rubber-ducky
A voodoo-mask
Corndogs
Can of beer
A Grim reaper suit
A chicken suit
A DVD-movie
Some garlic
Some curry-powder

Well that's all I can think up of for now. You guys can tell me things that I missed.

I have finished my first game Hungry Caveman which is a short game about a caveman looking for food. I need some Beta-testers so I can make sure it really work so it will be free from bugs and errors. So someone out there to want to test my game?

I wonder, how do you make characters face other directions when he is NOT talking to a person, like if you want a character to turn away from the screen or make it turn right or left. Also how do you move characters that is not Playable characters to move to other rooms?

Thanks in advice.

Critics' Lounge / Diner background
Sun 11/05/2003 18:25:50
For the second big game, Bill Starshine, I have drawn this background of a diner on planet Foora. I drew this by hand, scanned in it and then colored and cleaned it up. I haven't done any shading yet but I will make that later.

I would like some critics on this, both good and bad. If you wonder what those orange things are, it's just a futureatic design that is popular on planet Foora and the lamps are also popular design items. And just want you to know, the cushion-chairs at the disk are attached to the floor. And the black space is for the SCUMM interface.

I have encountered a bug in 2.55 version of AGS. When you start a new game and after you get to name the game folder the PC say: " The program have executed a forbidden action and will be shut down." and it shuts down.

The info for this is something like this:
AGSEDIT caused an invailid side-error in

Could anyone undo this error, I mean I can't start any new games thanks to this. Please help. By the way, am I alone about this?

I'm planning for the next big game Bill Starshine but I have got stuck in thinking of one of the puzzles. At somewhere of the first part you need to find stuff to the repair-droid DX22 and one of them is a blow-torch. The locations so far are Professor Nuts and Assistant Dunno's Lab, a bar, a main-street, a shop, a ware-house, a casino, the casino's office, outside ware-house, outside Lab, the Spaceship location and two or three outside places between the city, the Lab and the Spaceship. Could someone help me thinking of a good puzzle that is not too tricky but not too easy either. I don't have come up with all iventory items yet so it's okay that you come up with some stuff. Note that it's on another planet and the year is 2378, so think some stuff that is future like but some 20:th and 21:th stuff can work out. Well, good luck.

I have encountered a strange error while tested my game. In this situation the main-character will light a fire with a flintstone. There will be an object vinsible (which appears when you have used an iventory item on another hotspot and because of a global int you must have done this first), an animation of the character and then the animating of the object. When I test the game it do the character animation but then an error appear that say there are no veiws for it but there is a veiw.

Here is the script for it:

//script for hotspot5: Use iventory on hotspot
MoveCharacter(BOOGIE,96,141);
if (GetGlobalInt (8) ==1){
ChangeCharacterVeiw(BOOGIE,21);
AnimateCharacter(BOOGIE,1,0,0);
Wait(20);
SetObjectVeiw(1,15);
AnimateObject(0,0,0,0);
ObjectOff(1);
SetGlobalInt(2,1);
}
else {
DisplaySpeech(BOOGIE,"Me no pyromaniac.");
}

What is wrong with this then?

AGS Games in Production / Hawaiian Treasure
Sat 12/04/2003 21:02:46
Ladies and Gentlemen, Gals and Guys... let me present my first BIG game: Hawaiian Treasure!

The story: It's about me, who goes to Molokai, Hawaii for vacation. On my first day on the vacation, I meet Naomi McCallister, one of Hawaii's most popular pop singers. She tell me that she wants to help out her sister who have not got so lucky because of she gets more bills than she can pay, so Naomi wants to find the legendary treasure of Kuduwudu (the Great Sacred God of the ilse's locals) but she can't because two mysterious men in coats are trying to track her down. I decided to help her out and set out to find the treasure for her. As I go around Molokai I discover many strange things that somehow had connection with the treasure, like the crooked undercover gang called the Pineapple Mafia (those guys had caused a lot of trouble on Molokai the last three months), the mysterious spy Pete Gunn, the corruption in Hawaiian politic by a unknown politician, the local's legend of a evil shaman who tried to take over the world (but he have been dead for almost 2 milleniums) and the multi-milionaire casino boss Joe Pineapple.

And here is the cast of some of the most importaint characters.

Mats Berglinn: That's me! I'm a nice guy who have always dreamed about adventures and finally I get one. It was one of many reasons for that I was willing to help Naomi McCallister. You play as me throughout the game and trying solve many mysteries AND finding the treasure of Kuduwudu god.

Naomi McCallister: Isn't she something? She have been singing since she was 11 and she have become twice as popular as Britteny Spears in Molokai. She is friend with one of the local tribes of the Island ever since she was a child. But lately she haven't met the tribe for three months ever since the mysterious guys in coats tried to track her down. Now I get to help her find the treasure so her sister can live a better life.

Joe Pinapple: He is a gambling racatere and the boss of the Rolling Pineapple Casino in Molokai's captiol city. But is there somekind of connection between the corruption, the Pineapple Mafia and the men who is trying to track down Naomi? Even if he seems to be a grumpy, greedy, busy, rich guy, there's something that's weird with him. What can it be?

Pete Gunn: He is a top spy who have never ever done any mistakes when it comes to spying. I meet him during wandering around in Molokai's capitol city and he wants me to assist him to find vital information about the Pinapple Mafia and their plans. He also knows who the men, that tries to kidnapp Naomi, are and why they are after Naomi. He suspects there is something mysterious about Joe Pineapple the boss of the Rolling Pineapple Casino.

Kahnawana: There is much that is unknown about this ghastly voodoo guy. Accoring to the old legend of the locals of Molokai, Kahnawana was once a gentle medicine-man and he wanted people to like him. The people he served had their minds on the great Kuduwudu and less and less asked him for help and advice. After a time the shaman got so mad, frustrated and down and out, that he attacked the villages in order to get respect. However, the great god Kuduwudu sent down a thunder-bolt that killed the shaman. About 300 years later he came back as a spirit and all the hatred and anger had given him strong powers. He started to take over the world. The god and a gentle shaman struggled against him in a long battle before Kahnawana have been weakened and captured inside a medalion that is said to be in the Reptile god's cave where the Kuduwudu treasure is said to be within.

In this game you will find cool things like: About 50 characters, about 50 rooms, many puzzles to solve and a cool secret.

The progress is very slow because of the lack of experience about AGS and problems with making backgrounds and characters fitable for AGS but here is so far.

Total story: 100 %
Puzzles: 100 %
Dialogs: 5 %
Art: 2 %
Programming: 1 %

And if you wonder, the GUI that will be used for this game will be the Lucas Arts SCUMM GUI, just like the MI1, MI2, Sam & Max, Day of the Tentacle and Indy and the last Cruisine and Indy: Fate of Atlantis.
