I've been racking my brains for a theme and have finally come up with this:

Banks

From a murky loan sharks office to high security national banks. Get those creative juices flowing.  The possibilities are (almost) endless...

Hello I have come from the future where all the world has become engulfed in a nuclear winter (So stunningly portrayed by the one known as "FSi" in the last competition you know as the "Background Blitz"). We love to make point and click adventures as we understand these were one of the most popular forms of entertainment.  However, our people were wondering what the world was like in the time before the Great Cold so we can make some games.

Therefore, we would like you to draw us some backgrounds representing the cultures of earth.  You are free to choose whatever culture you wish to represent, whether it be the Pagoda stylings of Japan or ancient stone temples of the Maya. Or even something to do with Soviet Russia!   As long as it is clear what culture you are representing, we will be happy.

There are no limitations with resolution or colour although I must ask that they are usable in the program known as "Adventure Game Studio".

You have until the 24th day of the 2nd month.

I will draw some appropriate trophies at some point to bribe you to enter...

Hi there, I have been working on this background for a few days now and have come to the stage where I need to get the lighting correct.

I think the building shadows are okay but I just cant seem to get the oil lamp to work.  Does anyone have any advice they wish to offer.  In exchange, I can offer cookies.

Here is my attempt at the streetlight

Oh and if anyone has any general critique, it is more than welcome. I am aware that some details are not done yet though. :D

Thanks in advance.

Upper Tier Studios proudly presents:

Star Trek Newton - Episode One: Anomaly

“No great discovery was ever made without a bold guess”

-Isaac Newton

Story:

Crewman John Fischer is a recent graduate of Starfleet Academy assigned to the USS Newton, a
Constitution-class vessel currently tasked with performing scientific surveys in Sector 004. On
the completion of his first week aboard his new assignment, John begins to realise that the reality
of life in Starfleet isn't all chasing hostile aliens and meeting strange cultures. In fact, it can be quite
dull.

No sooner does he log this gloomy summary than the ship is rattled by some unseen force that
disables many of the ships systems! Isolated and unaware of what is wreaking havoc on the Newton,
John must get to his duty station and help himself and his crew stabilise the ship.

About:

Star Trek Newton is set in the Original Series era (around the 2260s) and the titular vessel is a
sister ship of the Enterprise.

General Discussion / Troy
Sat 22/05/2004 11:27:09
I saw Troy yesterday and was quite suprised, it was actually very good.  From the previews, it looked to be a epic battle type of film, but the plot was actually  quite interesting.

The fact that it was a 15 rated film allowed the film makers to make it fairly violent.  Also, you didnt get any little kids screaming out every 5 minutes.

I'm not going to give anything away, but if you have seen it, tell me what you thought of it.

(p.s ignore the one i put in the comp and activities forum, i have no idea why i did that)

Critics' Lounge / Fold out bed animation
Wed 27/08/2003 11:29:15
Hi guys, im making a fold down bed animation and i thought i would post it to see if it looks (remotely) realistic.  I would like some comments and criticism about it please :P

Double sized: (looks a bit wrong)

Thanks :)

#17
I'm a bit stuck on this background, as it looks a bit bare and devoid on anything interesting.   8)

I would appreciate some ideas to make it look any better.  And i am aware it is greyscale, its because its a cave and it appears differently in the game :P

Double sized :

Thanks :)

General Discussion / PC Gamer Article
Sat 12/07/2003 23:26:10
As some of you know, after seeing the reference to Pleughburg in PC Gamer's August issue, i have written an article on amatuer adventure gaming, with some reference to AGS.  I just want to post it here first before i send it, jsut so i can make sure it is allright and make sure i ahve not offended anyone in this , or and other Adventure Game Community.  Anyway, here goes:

                  ~Going Deeper Underground~

I  noticed you wrote a small article on a game called Pleughburg in August's Issue.  I am just writing to say that I also create amateur Adventure Games like this (although not as good) using the same games engine. I use an engine called Adventure Game Studio (AGS).  There are many quality games created with it, and although they are not the best graphics, they have excellent plotlines and puzzles.

Many people believe that Adventure games are a dying genre, but I disagree.  There is limitless potential for the types of games that can be created as long as the creator has some sort of imagination.  Is the main reason why it is a dying genre because they are boring to play?  I think not.  I have seen some amazing puzzles in amateur adventure games, such as the afore mentioned Pleughburg.  I fact, I have been playing it for a while, and I still, occasionally, get stuck.

Another great thing about the underground adventure gamers is that we don’t have to wait around for adventure games to be released in the commercial market, and to be fair recent examples, such as Escape From Monkey Island wasn’t exactly the most polished game ever.  We have the ability to create our own games, without needing to wait, and we can also re-create the style of the classics over yester-year, such as Day of the Tentacle, Monkey Island 2 and of course Sam and Max (which I might add, I am looking forward to the sequel, although it would have been better in the old style).

The best thing of all about creating your own games is the self satisfaction after all the hard work of scripting, animating, and background drawing is done.  Although it takes a lot of effort, the end product is amazing, even if the game is not the best in the world, but we don’t get paid do make them, so they are not going to be the best.

Communities of game creators often team together to make ‘game companies’, such as the featured gaspop software.  I would like to tell everyone about some other websites which offer amateur games of good quality, to prove my point that adventure games are still out there, even if they are not up to with top genres such as FPS or RTS.   I would advise people to play these games as they are amongst the best amateur games around, well the ones that I know of.  http://ilb.notrix.net/ ,
http://www.hello.to/tullesworld  and http://gac.gamespage.com/ are just a few of the top quality websites that produce some excellent games.

To sum up, adventure games are not dead; they have merely retreated underground where they may well have found a better home.  I  reckon this is where they will stay as the other, more dominating genres, have sapped away gaming classics which should never be forgotten.  In the words of a certain character in a certain pirate game: “Look out, behind you”.

Tell me if i need to change it, and i gladly will :D
Sorry if its rubbish

General Discussion / Monkey Island Film
Sat 12/07/2003 19:40:52
Hi, Magintz and I were discussing about films of adventure games, and we were joking about who would star in them.

For Monkey Island, I thought Johnny Depp would play Guybrush and Cameron Diaz would play Elaine.

Who do you reckon would star in it, other characters as
well ^_^

Critics' Lounge / C & C on a character
Mon 07/07/2003 21:57:28
Hi its me again, yippee!.

I was extremely bored at school today so I decided to doodle, and I ended up doing a pretty good character. ^_^

So I inked it and scanned it in (badly) and here is the end result.  The one on the right is the same character with the hoodie down. :P

Tell me what you think. Any  C&C please :D
