Happy belated birthday to FruitTree. Also happy birthday Nacho!

This is really great.  Could this be the future? Shame about the right clicking problem though :(

I will add my vote too...

Idea: Snarky - I love this unconventional mixture of cultures.  Your description makes it sound so plausible.
Technique: Jenn - Very consistent throughout.  Love the use of vibrant colours!
Usefulness: Joel - I agree very much about it being a Quest for Glory style background. Good.

The three entries are all lovely.  I am happy. HAPPY!

It's a very difficult situation as you can see it from both sides.  As much as I hate to see freeware projects like these get C&D's, the original developers are well within their rights to do so, not that I could see Activision doing anything with this series. Baffling.

You should all make Star Trek games, no one seems to care about them :D

So I guess I can begin the voting.  Here are the voting categories:

Idea - How well does the background depict the culture/cultures in question?
Technique - How well rendered is the background in the chosen style?
Usefullnes - Which would be best suited for an AGS game?

You vote now!!!

Until the end of the 3rd March (GMT)

It seems Snarky is close to finishing his entry so might as well wait...

QuoteOn the mspaint one, the details on the door (don't know english word for that part of the door...don't know in my own language for that matter) seem strange and kind of have an opposite perspective from the whole room.

I believe you mean the door panels Anian :)

They do kind of look out of perspective, yes.  Just switch them round and it should look better.  Maybe add a shower rail and shower unit above the taps.  Tiles on the right hand wall  next to the bath probably wouldn't hurt either.  The background is good for a first attempt though so yay.

The Scrolling background is looking really nice.  The detail is excellent but I'm not sure if the teleporters fit in with the style.  Some more detailing, a bit like the cloning vat, would probably help I guess.  Not sure I really like the big TELEPORT sign, but that is probably more of a game design choice :)

Keep it up :) Well done.

I'm happy to extend it a couple of days if everyone else is.  Nice entries btw :)

I really like this style, it pleases me.  I remember this from a while back and wandered what happened. I agree with GG and Wayne Adams about the parallaxing.  It's pretty simple to implement in AGS with Ali's lovely module and would work great if you want to add some depth to the game.

For some reason, I am reminded of 'Another World'.

Hello I have come from the future where all the world has become engulfed in a nuclear winter (So stunningly portrayed by the one known as "FSi" in the last competition you know as the "Background Blitz"). We love to make point and click adventures as we understand these were one of the most popular forms of entertainment.  However, our people were wondering what the world was like in the time before the Great Cold so we can make some games.

Therefore, we would like you to draw us some backgrounds representing the cultures of earth.  You are free to choose whatever culture you wish to represent, whether it be the Pagoda stylings of Japan or ancient stone temples of the Maya. Or even something to do with Soviet Russia!   As long as it is clear what culture you are representing, we will be happy.

There are no limitations with resolution or colour although I must ask that they are usable in the program known as "Adventure Game Studio".

You have until the 24th day of the 2nd month.

I will draw some appropriate trophies at some point to bribe you to enter...

I concur with those dates. Verily!

Idea: nihilyst - Just seems like an interesting emotion to portray.
Technique: FSi - Whenever, I look at your background,  it makes me feel a little sad and lonely!
Usefulness: Abstauber - There is a well defined foreground area for some puzzly fun to take place in.

I bought Disco some cheesy chips once, does that count?

This is good news.  The end is now in sight!  Maybe I will put my name down to beta test :D

Yep the shift button feature is a god send!  Lovely tutorial Ben.  I might have a go at drawing a background in your style when i get my hands on a tablet. :)

Hello again, and thank you for all your advice!  I think I have taken onboard the advice and have come up with this new edit.  Hopefully the light cast by the street lamp makes more sense.

As you can see, I still havent resolved the mast shadow, but it seems to have made for an interesting debate so we will see where that goes.

Edit:  I realised I hadnt added any light on the cobble below the street light.

Hi there, I have been working on this background for a few days now and have come to the stage where I need to get the lighting correct.

I think the building shadows are okay but I just cant seem to get the oil lamp to work.  Does anyone have any advice they wish to offer.  In exchange, I can offer cookies.

Here is my attempt at the streetlight

Oh and if anyone has any general critique, it is more than welcome. I am aware that some details are not done yet though. :D

Thanks in advance.

We've looked at that place before.  It's not a bad location really and is a really nice looking villa.  English translation of that page:

I think the â,¬1000 you are referring to is the Deposit and cleaning prices.
