nor can I afford even the cheapest quote that I've received for healthcare ($490/mo.)

I pay 240 â,¬* a year. As a student that is, but I wasn't, it wouldn't be intolerably more. I'm glad not to live in the US.

* 1â,¬ = 1.3$ or something.

Damn it. Missed the deadline once again.

But don't wait for me, I won't have the time to finish it today and perhaps neither tomorrow.

Yep, companies showed us, what "efficiency" means for two centuries now: Bribes, massive layoffs, complete disregard to hygiene, recycling or anything that could help reducing the destruction of the environment, outsourcing to countries where governments give a shit about civil rights etc. Take a look at all the examples all over the globe where electricity, transit or other key industries got privatized: It all got worse and why shouldn't it? You said it yourself: It's all about profit, but that can't possibly mean anything good. What's the point in having an efficient health insurance for the rich, while the poor become obese eating efficiently made fastfood?

Nah, we all know how bad the American Health care system is and there's no denying it. But it seems that throwing around catchwords like "socialism" keeps the people on the conservative's side in that matter. And many other matters.

Critics' Lounge / Re: 3D graphics style

I totally favor the retro look over the 3d one. The main reasons might be that I'm not really a fan of 3D environments in general (except for ego shooters of course) and that I'm a huge fan of Another World and Flashback and their vectorized peudo-3D pixel look.

Another thing is that the 3D-background has too much noise and looks way too blurry. If it would be cleaner/sharper and more like 'just' a hi-res version of the first BG without fancy effects then I might change my opinion.

Anyway, looks nice.

Alles Gute, Ghost!

And happy one, Tuomas.

Yeah, I don't use the collision detection neither. In my current game I have a lot of collisions to check (mostly swordfights) and I always manually check the distance so that the characters are only getting hit when they actually collide with the sword.
#1308
I just tested the new version but the sideborders for widescreen monitors don't appear for me. The game is 800x600 and my laptop's resolution is 1280x800.

Why don't you simply change the character's x coordinate when the A key is pressed? Something like character.x-=20.

Or make the fire blast (or whatever attack you want) an object/character that appears in front of the attacking character.

Just use a variable for these kind of things. Create a bool ("opendrawers" or something) and set it to true after talking to the man. Then in the drawer's action event, ask if the bool is true or not.

I'll try and come up with something within the next days.. the topic is just too good and I wonder why there's only one entry yet.

It seems you've put the if-lines into the plain room script, not in a certain event (like rep-ex, room_load etc). Could that be the problem?

EDIT: Ah, I see. Those lines are supposed to be part of the function. In that case they should be placed within the function in the global script, not loosely in the room's script. In the room's script you just import and call functions you declared somewhere else.

This should be in the global script:

Code: ags

function ExitIsActive(int count) {

   bool status;

   if (count>=0) {
      ExitCount = count;
      status = true;
   }
   else if (ExitCount>0)
      ExitCount--;
      status = true;
   }
   else {
      status = false;
   }
   return status;
}

And - as RickJ already wrote - this in the room's rep-exe:

Code: ags

   // Activate Exit
   if (ExitIsActive()) {
      RestoreWalkableArea(WALKABLEAREA_EXIT);
   }
   else {
      RemoveWalkableArea(WALKABLEAREA_EXIT);
   }

And, as you already did, this at the beginning of the room's script:

Code: ags

import function ExitIsActive (int count=-1);

Hm, something like that. Going through RickJ's code I'm getting a little confused I have to admit.

Very addictive but quite hard. Haven't beaten anything except the tutorial level yet.. but nice work.

General Discussion / Re: I'm in Berlin!

Well, it was a fun evening and I wasn't really that drunk, but the bouncer was an asshole. Fortunately some friends chilled at the one's home some 15 minutes away, so not all was lost ;)

But yes, you can have great nights at the White Trash. I also recommend the Haferflocken Swingers tomorrow.

I've always wanted to visit the Vaterland.

Jealousy status: medium.

You still don't need a semicolon after if-statements...
#1317
1. You need a space before if (vMike == 0).

2. The semicolon after if (vMike == 1) and if (vMike < 1) doesn't make sense.

3. You have do add some brackets. This:

Code: ags

if (vMike == 0)
  Display("Mike reaches into his pocket and retrieves $50.");
  player.InventoryQuantity[iMoney.ID] += 50;
  UpdateInventory();

Should look like this:

Code: ags

if (vMike == 0){
  Display("Mike reaches into his pocket and retrieves $50.");
  player.InventoryQuantity[iMoney.ID] += 50;
  UpdateInventory();
}

I'd make the background transparent. The dark sprite would stand out perfectly in this bright forum.

I just came here a few days ago and wow, I've been wandering around for a few days now

Then you just missed the heaviest snowfall in decades ;)

I can point you to a lot of places in Berlin, but I don't really know many bars with (free) live music. Fortunately, Kreuzberg is probably the best area to stay in when you're in Berlin. Next to Kreuzberg, Friedrichshain, the north of Neukölln and some parts of Mitte are the most interesting districts.

There are a lot alternative bars with cheap drinks but you normally have to pay for music.

Yes, there's the Yaam as cuiki mentioned. It's a well known place for Reggae, Ragga, Ska etc., but a bit touristy and expensive. Stralauer Platz 34, Ostbahnhof. Their website is in english too: www.yaam.de

cuiki also mentioned the Zapata in Mitte. It's a bar beneath the art house Tacheles (which might soon get evicted). In the Zapata there's a lot of live music, but it's not too cheap and lies in the very touristy Oranienburger Straße. The Tacheles is a nice place to drink something and look at paintings, but it's probably better to go there in summer.

A nice place is the area around the Oranienstraße (not to be confused with Oranienburger) in Kreuzberg - between the Kottbusser Tor and the Görlitzer Bahnhof. There are a lot of bars and the famous SO 36 club.

Another place in Kreuzberg is the Mehringdamm. There are some bars too and the Clash, a rusty, punkrocky bar with billard and table-tennis. There's also the Arcanoa, Am Tempelhofer Berg 8. It's a small bar, but there's often some free live-music (sometimes bands, sometimes jam-sessions).

Around the Hermannplatz in north-Neukölln, there are some nice bars too. One I'm often going to is the Tristeza in the Pannierstraße.

Friedrichshain is interesting in the rectangle area between Frankfurter Tor, Frankfurter Allee, Warschauer Straße and Ostkreuz. There's the famous touristy Simon-Dach-Straße with some cocktailbars and next to it the RAW-area with some clubs like the Cassiopeia.

Uh, I'm a bit tired of writing now, but i hope I covered most of the interesting stuff. I don't know what exactly you're looking for, the cheapest stuff when it comes to music is mostly punkrock and electronic stuff. If you're into punkrock or electro, the Köpi aka Køpi near the Ostbahnhof could be of interest. It's a well known squatted house with several floors and bars. The area around the Rosenthaler Platz is nice too.

Most of these places have websites so you might want to check them out. You might find it useful to know that "freier Eintritt" means free entrance / no money down and "Eintritt: Spende" means that you should donate some money if you have some ;)
