Is there any way to compile for a mac or whatever?

Hello there!

Unfortunately I'm woefully crap at painting, so maybe you can help me. Basically, this is the intro for a project I'm working on. Starts at the top of the image, then scrolls down slowly (with different layers moving at different speeds to create a less flat, static look).

http://shutupload.com/dl/be40faa9d593/

Originally it was meant to reach a drain at the very lowest level, and the camera was to pan down through the drain until it faded into darkness. But I can't figure out a way of making the perspective work (The camera would have to be very close to the drain, and I can't figure out how to get it that close seeing as at the top of the image everything is so distant, with things gradually getting a bit closer to the camera, if that makes sense...)

So I replaced it with bushes which look rubbish.

Has anyone got any ideas on how to make the drain perspective work, or any other suggestions?

Furthermore, the entire picture is fucking terrible, anyone got any suggestions? Because I can't paint. Any critique, changes, advice etc welcome.

Here's the PSD

hey all

I'm doing my end of year art project and need someone to do the coding side of things as I'm useless. It's nothing too amazing, but I'd rather just focus on the art aspect :) is anyone up for helping with this? It's only a tiny short little thing to showcase some stuff we've learned.

General Discussion / I'm in Berlin!
Sat 06/03/2010 12:22:00
What an amazing city! I just came here a few days ago and wow, I've been wandering around for a few days now and it's just an amazing place, isn't it?

Any of you AGSers from Berlin? Or have been there? If so, are there any cool places you'd recommend me going to see? Preferably non-touristy places :) I've already explored Mitte quite a good deal, and I'm currently staying in Kreuzburg.

I'd love to know of any pubs or other free venues (I'm very poor) that might play live music etc...

General Discussion / Strange 2D Flash game...
Thu 25/02/2010 14:47:07
Hello all,

I'm writing an essay for Uni and I ... need your help on one detail. Basically, a long time ago I remember playing a couple of flash games. All I really remember about them is that they were beautiful, bizarre illustrations with interactive bits you could click on to make stuff happen, some of them had strange music, the art was sometimes very abstract. I remember finding them fascinating but I cannot for the life of me remember any of their names and don't know what to google for. Any ideas, or any beautifully illustrated interactive things you would like to point me towards that could be of interest instead?

Thank you lovely people :) X

Hello all,

I want to knock together a brief animation using hand-drawn images that I've produced. I need it for my portfolio and I need it fairly soon, so it needs to be reasonably easy to learn too... and preferably free although if it's a very expensive package I may be able to dig out a version on a college PC.

Does anyone have any recommendations? All are welcome, tnx etc :) X

Hey all,

I need help translating something into German. It's something quite personal so I shan't post it here, but would anybody be interested in helping? (and promise not to replace important words with the german word for "cock!" etc... tempting as it may be!).

Hello all,

I'm looking for advice from you artists out there. I want to start making some basic jewellery, for instance earrings in the shape of sushi or cupcakes etc. I am guessing whatever material I make it out of needs to be hard and light, like plastic... but easy to mould, like clay. I also don't know what paint I should use in order to colour them?

What recommendations do you guys have? I have no idea how to go about doing this. Clay seems like it might be too heavy or would break too easily, but then I don't know a great deal about clay. All suggestions welcome :)

Sorry we hijacked the other thread ;)

Quote@Meowster: That's the general public's view, and that's the reason why organic food can be sold at higher prices.
This view stems from the popular belief that "artificial/industrial/processed = bad, natural = good", which, of course, is also not always true, not even most of the time.
Here's a study that nicely links both recent topics:
A comparison of the vitamin C content of fresh and frozen vegetables

There are many similar wrong ideas that are widely believed to be true, e.g. that fast food is bad in general.
But eating a Big Mac every day is fine, as long as you balance it with, say, a glass of orange juice.
Another example are the alleged beneficial effects of eating green salad. It has the nutritional value of a piece of paper.
Or take diets: a diet will cause a gain of weight, not weight-loss. Exercise will cause weight-loss, a diet will simply make the body use better what ends up inside of it, thus decrease what gets discarded.

(Note that these are not personal beliefs I just pulled out of my ass but insight gained from scientific studies.)

But, like I said, this thread is about Oliwerko's swollen throat, so unless it's OK with him, we might discuss this in another thread.

I get what you're saying - it's all about balance. But that still does not mean a big mac is good for you just because you balance it with something that is. The calorie, sugar, salt contents of such foods are actually not good bad for you. It doesn't mean you're immediately gonna die from having one obviously, and man I am such a sucker for McDonalds breakfasts occasionally... but it doesn't mean they're good for you either.

And regarding diets: again, it's about balance and also knowing the details. Exercise and a healthy low-calorie diet will make you lose weight faster than either of those alone. There is a benefit to restricting your calorie intake in terms of weight loss, so long as you do it right and don't make your body think it is starving.

There are scientific studies to support both sides of the argument unforunately :)

But since you've done a lot of reading about this, maybe you can answer a question I've had for a while regarding the Atkins Diet. One of my friends did this diet and holy crap, did he lose weight quickly - and he did not supplement it with exercise. I've been losing weight quite quickly recently just by eating lots of salads, fish and veggies, and doing lots of sports like rock climbing and running. But even though I'm pleased with the rate I'm losing weight, I still don't understand how the Atkins Diet works.

There have been a whole bunch of scientific studies about it, and how it works, and though there are arguments to support lots of different theories, the overall concensious SEEMS to be that

1. The Atkins Diet can make people feel nauseous which makes them eat less
2. It restricts the things you're allowed to eat so that it's almost impossible overeat your daily calorie allowance anyway (for instance you're allowed to eat all the butter you want, but since you're not allowed pasta, bread, crackers etc... you have nothing to put it on....)
3. The body being in ketosis reduces the appetite

So overall the Atkins Diet allegedly has the same impact as a low calorie diet because people end up eating less.

But I don't know if this can be true because my low calorie diet and loads of sports/exercise (which I'm currently doing to get into prime shape for climbing, so I'm doing it in the healthiest effing way possible) is not making me lose weight nearly as fast as someone doing Atkins and NO exercise.

I think I remember reading that calories obtained from carb-rich foods get turned into fat more easily than non-carb foods, I don't know if this is true or if that could be part of the reason why Atkins works.

Anyone got any ideas?

General Discussion / The BNP
Mon 08/06/2009 09:53:39
They've just won two seats in the European Parliament, with 120,000 in Yorkshire voting BNP.

So two questions - first of all, why would anybody ever support the BNP? And secondly, how is such an incredibly racist party allowed to exist? Surely what they do is illegal?

Nick Griffin comes out with shit like "the most tragic victims of a multi-racial society are the mixed race children it produces". I thought promoting racial hatred was illegal, no?

When I was very little I read (I think in the National Geographic or similar) about a woman from perhaps some Amazonian tribe (or similar) who was taken, taught to speak english and educated, then spoke about her experience and the differences between cultures etc. I've tried searching for this for some time without success, anybody have any idea of where to find this story or maybe it rings a bell to you? I remember finding it fascinating but unfortunately cant' remember enough key details to track it down...

General Discussion / Samantha Orobator
Sun 03/05/2009 23:46:35
Hey all,

If you could spare a moment, perhaps you could check out the story of Samantha Orobator: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/8031587.stm

She is currently being held in Phonthong prison in Laos, where she has been since last August after being arrested for having heroin in her luggage.

Phonthong prison is reknowned for violence and human rights violations that occur within its walls, and british prisoners have died there before. After a few months of being detained there, Samantha "fell pregnant", despite that it is a women-only prison.

Her trial has been brought forward by a year to start tomorrow, which the legal charity Reprieve believe is an attempt to get her trial over and done with before she can speak to a lawyer and the story gains the wider attention of the press. If convicted, she faces a firing squad.

Whether or not she was intentionally smuggling the drugs, the fact is that she's just 20 years old - three years younger than me, not more than a young girl from a deprived background. Maybe someone put the drugs in her luggage, maybe someone convinced her it was easy and a quick way of earning a bit of cash without letting her know the dangers she was getting herself into. Maybe she knew exactly what she was doing. But nobody deserves what she is going through; she deserves a second chance. We all make mistakes, and when you're a young girl from a deprived background and a not-so-great area of London, those traps can be a lot easier to fall into.

Because this is the AGS forum, I'm sure there'll be some level of discussion and debate and people flaming and arguing. But I'm asking those of you who want to help to, to read on. I contacted Reprieve and asked how we can help to make a difference. If you want to help, please do the following:

1. Join this facebook group and invite everyone on your list to join and take action (this is the kind of thing FB groups were invented for, not "I secretly want to punch slow walking people in the back of the head!): http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=74873457534 . This will help spread awareness. Remember that every little helps right now.

2. Email Samantha's local MP and Gordon Brown, detailing your concerns for Samantha and demanding action to be taken ASAP, before it is too late. Details below:

Hey all,

I long ago lost all the files used to create my AGS game so I only have the finished game left. I need to rip the sprites/backgrounds from this game quite urgently. Anybody got any advice on how I could go about this?

I tried searching the forums for similar questions but can't find anything, even though I'm sure someone must have asked this before....

Hello AGSers,

Anybody coming to Glastonbury 2009 or interested in going? There are rumours of Blur headlining this year, and a whole bunch of other great bands. Tickets are £175 but 90% of them have already been sold (yes yes, I know, before the line-up was announced...)

Glastonbury '08 was one of the best experiences of my life, so I totally recommend it. I went with a Bullfrog/Lionheader last year and this year I plan to pitch a giant Bullfrog logo by our tent (thereby making us the coolest tent EVER), and also coerce Molyneux into coming. Hopefully this will convince you that Glastonbury is the place to be this summer...

'lo all,

My idiot friend left it until three hours before the closing date of a competition to enter. Then he realised he didn't have any of the MP3s on his home PC.

I decided to search my PC for any old tunes of his I had.

LONG STORY SHORT I need someone to rip audio from a .mov file within the next hour (closing date of the comp) for me! I have no software and no idea how to go about this, and man, if someone does it I will personally... hug the crap out of you if you go to Glastonbury this year.

ALL MY LOVE,

Salks

I've recently been reading about the way animals are reared and killed for consumption and it's pretty upsetting. Though I've always been concious about the decisions I make regarding meat and egg purchases, reading the details of the unnecessary suffering that animals go through just to produce cheap low quality meat is really upsetting and spurred me to start a thread about it, in case some of you don't already make awesome purchasing decisions when buying your meat. Yay!

I hope you guys choose your meat/eggs/milk wisely. Please always choose free range, freedom farmed meat. If you can't afford to buy free range meat then don't buy meat at all, don't support intensive farming. It's only a few £s difference and helps to support farmers who treat their animals with respect and give them a decent life before they end up on a plate. If you can't afford meat, buy some tasty vegetables or a nice bit of fish instead - they're cheaper and probably better for you!

Lots of people don't think about what they're buying. They buy the cheapest meat available without a thought to the suffering of the animal that meat came from. Please don't support this

If you want to be especially cool and sexy and awesome, you would also ask restaurants if the meat they serve is from free range animals, and you would not buy products containing eggs that you don't know are from free range hens. I admit this may be easier for me than it is for some, as I live in Brighton where people are quite conscious about this sort of thing. But make an effort anyway plx, because that makes you super extra ultra cool.

People who buy cheap intensively farmed meat are assholes. Don't be an asshole! Buy Free Range! Think of the animals! Meat from sad animals tastes bitter and salty and sad.

In all seriousness there is no excuse for buying intensively farmed meat so please, please think of the difference you make by buying free range :)

Bye! :)
