He was a canadian revolutionary some time in the 1800's, who executed a guy named... Thomas Ashe? Thomas Scott? And he was executed for treason for setting up an uprising... much like Collins... and then a rebellion. He fought for peoples rights but he also was violent in his methods or something like that... again, much like Collins.

I love revolutionary leaders.

All I wanted to know was the extent to which people knew about the Irish War of Independence and its heroes, for a school project. You think I randomly ask questions like.... uh oh, I think my socks are burning. Hang on.

I thought Irish History was boring until I actually bothered to learn about it. It's actually full of really amazing people, and the thing was there was a lot of teamwork and friendship and sticking together, because that was the only way for a country with no army or fixed arms supply, or even a government, could win a war.

Michael Collins was the swashbuckling hero of the story of the Irish War of Independence. He was less of a romantic than the likes of Dev and Cathal and Boland, and way more pragmatic. And yet, in the end, his story turned out to be the most romantic of all. Shakespeare could not have outdone the story of Michael Collins. Even down to the love triangle between Harry and Michael (best friends) and Kitty, the eventual death of Harry and many other close friends of Michael, before his last letter to Kitty and his own violent death. Even his own words and those of other peoples foreshadowed the events to come, IE, Winston Churchill, "Michael Collins looked like a man that was signing his own death certificate". "The poor man is in a hurry to meet his death". Of course, then they went and screwed up the entire story with a hollywood movie, but I'm talking about the actual story as recorded in various newspapers, books, diaries, etc..

The story of Michael Collins is  one of friendship, trust, betrayal, love, hate, war and tragedy. It's a true story, and all the characters have their faults because they are real. It's well worth the research.

Even if it's just to uncover gems like this:

On Lloyd George asking why Michael Collins assassinated the 14 RIC men, sparking off Bloody Sunday, Michael replied,

“Well, I heard those fellows had a nasty shock in store for us, so I gave them a nasty shock first.”

On asking Winston Churchill why the huge bounty on his head, Winston replied:
“It was a good price, £5,000. Look at me, £25 dead or alive [by your troops]. How would you like that?”

I remember echoing Bills words, and then there was silence. Outside, I could hear the rattle of wheels on the cobbles, and I somehow couldn’t believe that such peace would bring such terror in such a short time. I looked up and whispered, “Are you telling the truth, Michael?”
Like a bolt, Mick stood upright and grinned. “No!” He said merrily. “But didn’t I tell you not to leave the bloody thing in the hallway?”

Anyway, what I really wanted to know was if anybody knew anything about him or the war of independence and the general idea I'm getting is... no. Not much. So anyhoo, thanks. Ciao.

So all in all you don't find it terribly exciting, no?
#1504
Hmmm, so not much then.

What about the war of independence? Is much known about that?

EDIT: THE IRISH war of independence, obviously

Bastards. Our History Textbooks cover every vaguely important historical event since in Ireland since 1200, and every vaguely important historical world event since 1800.

Screw you lot anyway.

Okay, well what do you know about Michael Collins, from anything you've ever seen heard or watched about him?
#1506
You can't seriously be telling me that you people from the other parts of the world don't have history books.

That's just insane.

Okay well all those without textbooks... those who know who Michael Collins is (Cork born Collins)... could you, without actually reading anything about him first, post your opinion/knowledge of him, right here.

Don't do any research for this, just post whatever you know about the Michael Collins of the Irish War of Independence.
#1507
CJ, you edited that to make me look dumb. That was mean.

Also, I have read a bunch of books on Collins, and indeed that very website link I was given. I want something on Collins from a school textbook. If anybody has a section/chapter on the War of Independence in Ireland, then you should have something on Collins.

Quote'English history?!' There are about 1000 textbooks written on every period of history. You'd be hard pressed to find one that had Michael Collins in unless you were specifically studying the period of history he pertains to.

It has to be from a school textbook. Most school textbooks will quickly cover modern history from most countries. There should definitely be something on the Irish War of Independence in English and American textbooks at least.

#1508
I need a little help from anybody in school. And not from Ireland.

I need you to look in your history textbooks and post exactly what it says about Michael Collins in this thread. You should find his name in the index. If not, your curriculum sucks! But seriously, everything it says on him. Or if it's REALLY long and you hate typing, maybe just the juicy bits.

I'd especially like if anybody with an English History Textbook could do this.

And I'd be your best friend. We'd be friends like, say, Dev and Michael Collins. No, wait, better yet. Like Dev and his right hand. And all that friendship at so little cost!

Thanks :) By way of contribution to my own thread, I'll start:

Oh wait, I'm in fourth year. I have no history books. Whoops! Okay, let's look through... hmm... aha!

MICHAEL COLLINS 1980 - 1922
"Michael Collins was born in Clonakilty in 1890 and led the IRB until his death in 1922. He was 31 years of age."

Ah, now, see? Except multiply that information by about 50xINTERESTING and you kind of get what I mean!

PS: Must be a school textbook!!!

Damn, so that's why nobody ever replies to my posts. Time to do some serious editing...

There have been some changes around here.

Funny how we got all these once-off post newbies posting all of a sudden. Nearly suspicious.

Kings Quest was one of the most frustrating games ever, yet I loved it. I loved the atmosphere, I loved being chased, I loved the magic and the mystery. On the other hand, I hated dying because the main character sees fit to walk over the edge of a cliff like a lemming, or because of every other way you could die in a stupid and pointless manner. In the end, pure frustration won out and I stopped playing them, but I have to admit Kings Quest were excellent games, if you were patient and suicidal.

But being neither patient nor suicidal, I guess they never really appealed to me.

But since this was the style of the original game, it's kinda unfair to flame tierras remake because they stuck to the style and made it better. That's kinda like somebody releasing a bug-fix of Monkey Island 3, and then somebody complaining that their version has annoying voices.

But I know exactly what you mean :)

The Team So Far...
SSH - Project Leader

The Basic Storyline

Deep in the highlands of Scotland a young girl, Aille, lives in a castle with her parents. Her father is the ruler of the area. Aille loves horses and loves to go for long walks. One day she finds some wild horses while walking by the loch. She finds them friendly and gets up on one to ride. As it gallops along, she feels like she is flying. Then she realises, she is flying. The horse has wings and is flying through the sky. Frightened, she screams, but the horse talks to her as a voice in her head, reassuring her that he will not let her fall. He is the Air Elemental, lord of the skies.

He has made contact with her because she has been seen to be a good person (TM). He tells her of awful events unfolding: fires set and people destroying the natural balance of the elements. He takes her to meet the Earth elemental: the unicorn. He tells that he has not been able to find the Fire and Water elementals for a council and suspects that the fires being set are the work of the Fire elemental who may have captive the Water elemental, who is the one who can stop the fires most easily. Aille asks why she is chosen. The elementals tell her that not all can see them: only thos eehwo truly believe in magical things. Aille has wnated all her life to see unicorns and dragons and is glad to help.

She returns to her father's castle, her mind whirling, and thinking about what has happened. But no sooner has she stepped outside agian than some evil witches, working for the bad Elemental, kidnap her and take her off to a foul-smelling pool high in the mountains, ready to sacrifice her to....

So, Aille discovers what is going on and saves the area from the evil. Sea monsters, dragons, magic and conspiracy. Aille not just saves her village, but the whole world ecosystem... woot!!!!

The Next Competition
The next competition is for Artists and Musicians. Ordinarily I'd ask SSH to set the competition but I remember that he doesn't really come here over the weekends and it can't be delayed... so....

3 Artists and 1 Lead Artist will be chosen from this competition, as well as 2 musicians.

THOSE APPLYING FOR POSITIONS AS ARTISTS:
Post your image(s) on the forum. Remember, the artists design background art and not characters. The Animators fall to the job of Character Design. Hang on, that sentence was backwards. Anyway, my point is this; use your imagination to develop a scene from this game. Submit backgrounds or storyboards or designs (for backgrounds). You can submit as many as you want, depicting areas of a fantasy land. They may be in any medium whether natural or computer generated.

THOSE APPLYING FOR POSITIONS AS MUSICIANS:
Read that sentence out loud! It Rhymes! How neat is that!?
Anyway, submit midis that you think suit the theme of this game. It can be any sort of midi whatsoever, even if it won't be used in the final game. So long as it shows you have captured a style or even that you are just a really goddamn awesome midi composer. Post a link to your midi(s) on this board.

And totally remember: Now that other people who want to apply for Animating/Dialogue know what the theme is, they can get a head start. Go! GO!

And quit making snidey remarks while I'm still here! That is just so rude!!!

I’m a little late, but there was bad traffic, I swear.

Anyway,

That was a seriously tough call and I have to say you all showed extremely vibrant imaginations and quite frankly, I think all those games should be made. But the losers had to be hand picked and laughed at and here are those people that we can now ridicule cruelly:

The People who did NOT win
Quintaros, I didn’t choose you because I think although your story could be excellent, it’s very sombre and mightn’t be the most fun project to work on.

Mr Frisby... I didn’t choose yours because although the idea is quite funny, it’s a little too cliché, you know? Aliens have been done a lot. But I loved the art of the main character!

Ginny, again I love this idea. I once read a book called the Never-ending Story. I would imagine your story to be somewhat like this.

Alky, your idea is obviously well planned and thought out. I don’t mind that you didn’t stick to the deadline.

Now here’s the person we can pretend not to ridicule, but really we’ll just laugh at him behind his back and make snide comments about how the competition was fixed, and he’s a power freak and stole his idea from a book by that guy who wrote that awful book about the girl with the Zelda-Style fairy and the bears on the mountain in Alaska with the armour.

The Winner, dude!
The winner is SSH, and not just because he’s my assistant programmer! His idea could be made into a long or short game as seen fit, and contains enough magical elements for some really interesting and colourful backgrounds. The idea is not all that original but it’s a proven formula. Let’s see if he can make it work :)

If you want, you can choose a person from the list of runners up as a co-designer, or you can simply stick on your own.

So Far...
SSH, you should start developing your story a bit more. The next competition is for Artists and Musicians, and so you can pick a suitable style for your game. Or, three. Or however many.

Now you can all laugh and snigger and make snide remarks about me for rigging the competition and making bland comments. Do this while I’m setting up the next competition, so you don’t inadvertently hurt my feelings, okay?

Well she sucked.

I think womens rights is a great thing. Everybody is equal. But it can go too far with the whole "woman power!" thing.

That said...

Miez, the site is gorgeous, really gorgeous. But my modem sucks. It's not you, it's me.
#1518
Wow. All they're missing is a PMS quiz!!!

It took ages to load on my crappy modem, I gave up pretty quick. It took ten minutes just to allow me to type in "women" and "Gender". I don't understand. Does this make me lesbian?

QuoteOf course, THAT is the real choice; we all know, in our spirits, that there IS a God. Now, to admit it or not; that's your choice, and eventually the consequences of whatever you choose will catch up with you, as do any and all actions performed in life itself (it’s a law of the universe). So, speaking exclusively for myself, I'm not afraid to admit that I believe in God...

So basically Athiests are people who know there's a god and choose not to follow it.

Man am I glad you were just a guest.

I'm out of this thread now because it's just causing me to be rude and annoying and immature, and I'm usually not. At least, you know, try not to be. I hate to hit and run, so PM me if you have any serious issues.

Ciao, or something.

EDIT: This thread is uncharacteristic of me. It's a bad example of AGS too. As Barcik said, it's a friendly place. In fact, I'm often overwhelmed by just how helpful and friendly people can be here. Usually I am a much nicer person than this, I swear to god. Oops, I mean, vishnu.

QuoteI do not feel that this forum will be of any help to me in my processes of learning anything about the studio or any of its designing systems.

No, that would be correct. Try the technical help forum.
