You know when you get oranges with wierd red stuff inside them? That's when the orange has its period.

Actually, did you know you sometimes find Chicken Eggs with blood inside them? That's the chicken's period. Yeaaap.

To be honest, I'd much rather go out with an Indiana Jane kind of girl but in this day and age, you don't find them. They exist in movies but after the age of 14, girls seem to lose interest in climbing trees and generally being adventurous. Going "sailing" or "rock climbing" isn't my idea of an Indiana Jane, thats just someone that likes sport. The same with ladies/girls that like "XTREME SPORTS!!!!11" like skateboarding, snowboarding etc - they're into sport. They're not adventurous.

I'm seventeen, I grew up with the following activities as part of a daily ritual...

1. Playing Video Games
2. Climbing Trees and making tree houses
3. formatting my 386 every day to try and make it break
4. Nurturing my 486 so it could run games meant for a Pentium
5. Playing football, riding horses and basketball
5.1. Playing Guitar (and Keyboard)
6. Drawing
7. reading and writing
8. collecting PETS!

Except for the last ones, maybe I have more male traits than female (I am sooo not a lesbian BTW, I am currently being stalked by my X BF anyway). I have never lost the desire to do any of the above. 'Cept for the 386 bit because that would just be sad. I do that with my Pentium III now. Also the 486.

And I'm not ugly!

Okay I sort of... you know, messed around with the eyes on that because I thought it looked funny, but if you imagine my eyes as being normal...

Power to the Girl Geeks >:)

This isn't a problem for me any more, I don't know how I solved it (I restarted AGS and that didn't fix it, I also tried reloading the room, that didn't either... ) But I would sure as hell love to know why it happened.

I had a scrolling screen with a 256 colour BG. Everything was working fine and I had the areas all set. I had tested the room before, with MUSIC2 playing. Then I changed the music to MUSIC3 and tested it again.

It seemed fine, except for an odd sound when it loaded the room, like a piano key was stuck or something. If you tried to walk it would also be fine. It was only WHEN YOU WALKED ON A CERTAIN AREA of the screen that it crashed with an error and quit AGS. Every single time the same area. Eventually I dismissed it and kept working, telling myself I'd ask here later. I imported an updated version of the same background and tested it, forgetting the problem... which was gone.

What the heck was that? It seemed as though the Music and the Background disliked each other or something! And why would a midi make it crash in one particular area of the room?

I'm a very curious person  ;D

The longest journey was BULLSH**!!! I regret wasting my hard earned money on that crap.

In other news... Good games aren't just about graphics. Graphics may be eye candy, but it's the storyline, characters etc., that are gonna make people like it. Unless you're talking worse-than-Kings-Quest-1-on-prozac.

Also, aye do believe MI3 was indeed.

But that doesn't mean that MI3 or Longest Journey were better than the original Sam N Max or MI games.

You made sure the box "Play music on room load" was ticked, and entered 1?

And the music is called MUSIC1.wav?

Make sure it's not weirdly encoded or something that the game can't read, by putting an ordinary midi in it's place.

Otherwise, it should work :(

Do the 7th Guest hintbook! That scared the bejuses out of me!
I'm serious.
Like one second it's a book and the next...

Talking to the worlds biggest athiest here, Para. Couldn't possibly be the baddest man. Well you could because I'm a girl, but... yeah.

The christian theme leaves it open to a very small community.

However, on the other hand, the christian community has very little in the way of games and stuff, (hahaha, there was this one game that involved shooting chickens with a gun of love and convertin them or something... and I'm not talking about that simpsons episode either)... so you might find that there'd be a market.

...(I'm female :) )

I just wondered how many females used these forums, so we could flock together and gossip and bitch... (yeah, I'm joking)... because I noticed that there seem to be more guys and most games are released... by guys. In fact, the only game I've played by a female at all included a "totally spies" style main character complete with an initial inventory of pink nail polish, a mobile, pink purse and some glue to fix her broken heels.

I'm still getting aquainted with people, so it'd be nice to know :)

Also, let's counter this pink stupidity and make a lesbian seagull game. Who's in for a lesbian seagull game? I have invented the main character, her name is Dolphin and she's strong. Her mother was an amazonian warrior. Seagull. And amazonian warrior-seagull. Her lesbian lover was killed in a tragic accident involving a cat and some teeth. Dolphin sets out to avenge her lovers death, armed only with her sexuality and also some wings, and this thing the RSPCA clipped around her neck. Speaking of which, she's also being hunted by the RSPCA, who want to investigate her sexuality mercilessly. With other bigger, LESBIANERER seagulls, and also a Gay Hawk.

Who's with me?

Okay is this asking for pictures of people or something? Because if so, I have no problem with that. That's good. Except I completely don't understand the post, and I don't know what Mittens are, and I think MAGS is a chef and okay now I just realised it's a competition..

I know exactly what you mean. The Lucasarts games all have great atmospheres. They had the right music in the right places, characters that were lovable, great scenery.... but early Sierra games also had a great atmosphere, and they had no music, no characterization as such, crap graphics and some typical overused Grimm Fairytale Plot. My guess is that the use of colours is very important. Also people and witches used to chase you in that game.

Was I imagining the atmosphere in Kings Quest I???? I was just thinking, it always had that kind of scarey, "Somebody might jump out from that bush" feeling!

Anyway, my favourite example of atmosphere was the end of MI2, which was a combination of colours, story, characters, music (wonderful music), design, probably something else, and writing.

Chris jones is a bastard, I don't know why. You know when you're filled with so much unearthly love, that your emotions are incapable of handling it, and you feel confused and maybe stab yourself once or twice by mistake, and then you think you feel hate because you feel love that much, and then you realize it's love, and you break down and weep?

*sob sob sob sob*

I'm sorry, I react badly to coffee. But thank you for AGS, in case you misunderstood my abnormality above :)

. Tried this at the end of the display function: ";" ?
Also, I would recommend this scripteditor by AJA Productions: http://koti.mbnet.fi/dima/scripteditor/

Hahaha, very funny. That was indeed the problem. Am I stupid, mommy? Okay I'm a bit better at it now. Ahaha, indeed I have figured the basics of Cutscene...ery out!

Oh, well I guess that ends this thread, seeing as I've already started using AGS. I have sunburn on my nose :(

I'm also a complete newbie but... :)

First off, I'm not sure why (It's explained somewhere) but the higher the resolution the slower the game plays. This is explained in the FAQ on the main page, I think, if I remember correctly. Besides, most game makers using it are fans of old school style games, so 320x200 is perfect for the old pixel style. That's probably why there isn't a huge demand to higher the resolution capabilities.

Second, for 256 colours FLC is preferable, and for Hi Colours AVI is preferred. You can use any file type supported by Media Player, I believe.

That's my two, unproffesional cents worth. If you're stuck between choosing this engine and another, read http://www.agsforums.com/yabb/index.php?board=3;action=display;threadid=6980 .

Also, if it helps, I started AGS recently and the scripting langauge doesn't take to long to learn, there's a community here always happy to give help or critique on your work and you can advertise your upcoming games here too. There's also a thread for recruiting voiceactors, artists or programmers and/or offering your services. It's a free program (swap ware) and you can even submit suggestions as to the upcoming releases. The community alone makes AGS stand out among the rest.

Okay, Welcome :) :) :)

So as not to start another thread about movies, because I'm pretty sure the answer to this question is no... can you loop AVIs to play smoothly over and over? Without a break? Just curious.

Lovely! Thanks! I will be stealing their work observing their methods!  ;D

If you mean pixel art for backgrounds, I just do my stuff in some program, paste it into PSP and use MOSIAC by 2 on it. It's not THAT authentic but it softens up sharp artwork nicely :)

Damn, and there I was giggling like a schoolgirl.

The lightmap system is making me drool, the last engine I used for making games was RPGmaker, and it was incredibly limited in comparison to AGS and that lot. You really had to manipulate the system to create extra features and it could take hundreds and hundreds of pages just to create one custom battle system... which didn't allow for random battles or anything. When I discovered the main Adventure Game engines I couldn't believe it, they really are flexible. Gorgeous.

Boy am I looking forward to when I can do simple crap with AGS. Right now I'm crying in frustration because my display message command won't work. But one day, oh yes, one day....

...It WILL be mine.

Beginners' Technical Questions / Cut Scenes
Wed 02/07/2003 01:38:46
okay so I can design the rooms and add the music and hotspots, teleport between rooms etc etc.,

I wanted to try and do some sort of a cutscene where the main character enters a room is automatically taken from the players control and say walks over to the other side of the room to have a conversation with somebody... automatically. The player isn't in control the moment he enters the room.

Unlike RPGM, there is no "Auto Start Event"...  ;D It made it soooo much easier...  ;D ;D ;D

Okay can anybody tell me how to do this? I'm a complete newbie by the way so don't make my brain implode.
