General Discussion / Re:Horror Films

Oh nice - favourite horror movies with a touch of the supernatural.

In no particular order of favouritism:

- The Kingdom (not a movie per se, rather a TV series, but it scared the willies out of me)
- Poltergeist
- Evil Dead (but only part 1)
- Hellraiser (parts 1 & 2)
- The Blair Witch project (and also the accompanying mockumentary "the Curse of the Blair Witch")
- Don't look now
- The ninth gate (I liked it enough to buy the DVD)
- Angel Heart
- The Ring

not a lot of slashers in there... but then I'm more the subtle type :)

I've been testing this sad excuse for a game they call "Return of the King" for PS2. And it uses a cutscene-to-game transition that's absolutely breathtaking. It was used in "the Fellowship of the Ring" as well. They've modelled scenes from the live action movie clips and do a seamless transition from FMV to interactive 3D. These games might suck, but those transitions are extremely well done and look like a mighty pain in the behind to do (technically).  :)

Why not create a particle effect in front of your spaceship - or whatever - with the particles preferably emanating from a disk or square plane (so that they don't appear to come out of 1 point, fountain like). Then use high motion blurring on them ... that might work. You could even change their colour as they stream past. Just don't use a static starfield as background image, because that's gonna look teh sucky.

Nice method, and the result is very good. Only little niggle is that some edges are nice & smooth, some are too blurry (the piano) and some are too sharp (windowframe).
If you have a digital camera you can put together lifelike BG's in (relatively) no time!  ;D

Great find, Salks  :D - this is a very interesting article. It looks like part of a course in game design, any more where this came from?

Ooo! are you planning to remake Spy vs. Spy?! If you are, maybe this would be the time to make a multi-player plug-in for AGS  :P I hate playing on the same keyboard.
(or just space the keys out)

A two mouse, two player simultaneously on screen (or split screen) point & click adventure might be fun though...

I'm working on a version right now that not only does all that, but it has a Make1337 command that will turn every dialogue in your game into 1337-sp33k!

Here's an example:
Original - "I'm Guybrush Threepwood and I'm a mighty pirate!"
After the Make1337 command - "sup d00sdz I'm [GB]3-3pwud n I'm 4 1337haxx0rz omfg you sux loloollloz"

It'll revolutionize adventure games as we know it.

OMFG! Make that a plugin. Finally all these AGS games are gonna be discovered by the hardcore community out there!

- D00D? W7F? Pl3uR983uR9? 1337!!!1!

I know about the Han and Greebo editing, but what's up with the glass and the cobra?

In Raiders there is the scene where Indy falls into a pit filled with snakes (on the digsite). There is one shot where he's face to face with a rearing cobra. There is a pane of glass between Harrison Ford and the cobra (moviestars are too expensive to be left alone with venomous snakes) and in the movie a reflection of either Indy or the snake shows in the glass. They've removed it using the magic of computers. Yay!

Do you have any more info on this markypoo?

I'll assume the alter ego of Markypoo for this (trust me, it's only temporarily) - two small articles about the BBFC mutilation can be found on:

Any of you europeans going?

"October 10, 11 & 12 2003" - not unless we can invent some kickass time machines... :P

Seriously - I'd like it, but Oregon is like ... far away ...

Bit late - but still - that sucks Rode! It sucks the donkey's earlobes. If it was a household appliance it would be one of them bagless vacuumcleaners. That's how sucky this is.  :(

Have some cake ... don't pee on it.

Or do - it's your cake :P

Even without colours - that is SO yummy! ;D Very nice BG.

Try and find SoundCLub (google - the company that made it still has it on their website somewhere). It's freeware, and ridiculously easy to make some simple tunes with.

Yep - Vel's right: scaling is your best bet: scale the picture to (say) 95% and then scale it up to it's original size again. That will give you (slightly fuzzy) auto-AA.
Blurring might work, but on small BG's even a little blur has a huge impact, turning your pristine picture into carrot cake. Or something. :)
Nice BG, by the way!

Also there is the great CDex - freeware, google for it: it converts WAV to MP3, and MP3 to WAV and it can rip CD's.
