General Discussion / Re: Spider-Man 3
Mon 07/05/2007 22:36:36
It was an okay movie. Nothing more. However, I've never been a huge fan of the spiderman movies to begin with. This one was just kind of bleh compared to its previous two movies. It just seemed long, and as people have mentioned near the middle, some of it just seemed silly. The only thing to really look forward to were a few cameo's. But, if you don't expect much, which I didn't, it's entertaining enough.

General Discussion / Re: British TV
Sat 05/05/2007 01:42:03
I enjoy british television, a lot. However, I've never felt it was superior to what I get in America. It's just that there's so much drivel that is always on, it's hard to seperate the truly great stuff from the mundane.

I do think there's definitely a difference between the two humors (American and British), as far as older British tv shows go. I can't really explain it, but I just know that if some of the greatest british shows were released here, the mass American audience wouldn't take to them. I'm sure we have a few shows that go the other way.

There surely have been great shows that have come out since Fawlty Towers and Black Adder. It's just that television has changed, so it's hard comparing what's on now to what was on ten twenty years or more ago.

I do enjoy the new Dr. Who. Life on Mars is good. No there not sitcoms, but I find them highly entertaining, as far as new television goes.

I don't know that I have just one idea that I'd love to do, but I have always wanted to create a game that delves into science fiction. Regardless of what I make, I want to do something with humor in it.

General Discussion / Re: Calling in Yahtzee
Thu 12/04/2007 01:09:59
Still, seriously...we need the third installment of Larry Vales.

As to Yahtzee...I've played most of his early work, and a bit of his newer stuff. What he has is a knack for polishing his games. His ideas, while not original, are usually well made (some of his dialog could use some reworking, though). I really just wonder where he gets the time to do most of what he does. I just see a pale skinny guy chained to his computer whenever I think of Yahtzee.

Dave is another entity, and shouldn't really be compared with Yahtzee. Also, I like Dave, and therefore am more inclined to like his games.

As Yahtzee isn't really the creator of the idea, just the creator of the first game, his oppinions really shouldn't hold too much weight on this decision.

I think what would be more beneficial would be bringing back the Insta-Game idea, rather than new series of games. The only problem with InstaGame, is the consistency of graphics, if say more than one person submits them.

Not that a new series wouldn't be a terrible idea. Frankly, it's really up to whoever would like to create such a series. I don't really like having to work with someone else's previous game ideas and try to fit mine in with them. To me InstaGame has similar resources as RON but people have more freedom to do what they want.

I'd much rather give praise to Phil Reed, who needs to make more games.

I read through the posts, and as a programmer, I don't really think JeffDXA is being unreasonable. His problem is that he listed something that bothers him about programmers on a forum where most of the people who frequent there, are probably passionate about games. So really he's just not complaining to the right people. I like how everyone assumes he's a bad game designer just because he's stepping on toes on the forum. Just stop posting on that thread and it will go away.

Considering the first game ever released was Lassi's quest, I think we can all be certain that we've have a slew of "crap" games since the beginning.

A nice solid game.

Graphics were consistent and well made. I think, possibly, they're one of features that draws you into the game the most. The animations were well made and executed.

I enjoyed the music. Nothing catchy enough to memorize a tune, but fun to listen to while playing the game.

The story was silly, in the good way. Dialog had some good humor. It did seem, to me, that the game started out a little weak on humor, but was strengthened as I played the game. Don't know if this is because I was adjusting to the humor, or because you were developing a good sense of humor while creating this game.

Puzzles were well done. I really enjoyed the cryptology one. The hints were provided enough to keep you focused on your task, and a few puzzles were at the right difficulty level to make you feel accomplishment.

All in all, a wonderfully fun game to play. I'd definitely like to see what adding voices could do to this game. The only real complain I could muster, would be that I wish some of the dialog trees wouldn't have you repeat yourself to choose another option. It was just a bit redundant. Of course, this is a minor complaint, and really I had to search for something to give you some sort of useful criticism. Can't wait to see what else you'll create.

Of course, the real problem lies with the fact that the term crap is really subjective. Especially since were dealing with all different age groups. If I release something at 14, which might blow my mind at the time, everyone else above a certain age might not be so impressed.

The problem with game development, as I see it, is that it's such a time consuming process, that regardless of the end result, you're still proud of the work you've done. You're proud of the bad graphics, you did yourself, of the music, plot, and code you did yourself. It's hard to say, "Well, I've made this and it took me a good deal of time, let's not let other people see it."

When things are given to us for free, I don't honestly care if it's crap or not. Yes, I'd prefer someone have some criticism's done, and fix all known bugs, but if it's the best they can do, then release it to the public, get some feedback, and work on it.

We also have the problem, that there is not too much to learn from game making, other than trial and error. There isn't a bunch of dusty books that hold all the theory behind creating games. This isnt't to say there aten't any sources of knowledge, it's just not abundant.

All in all, unless you charge me for a game that's crap, I don't really care. I can always delete the game.

Totally will be buying this in a few weeks when I start working.

It's sad to see that the Space Quest game wasn't finished, I was totally anticipating you finishing it out of the blue.

I would check out review sites if I were you, rather than listening to our oppinions. I only say this, because, in general, we seem to be crotchety old men pining for the golden years of adventure games, and not too many of us have been happy with the newer games. That isn't to say that there isn't truth in our dislike of newer games, just that if a game doesn't fit exactly into our perception of adventure games, we automatically write it off. Or so it seems.

The problem you'll find with the newer games, is because not as many of those games are being made, there are a lot less good ones. Just as if you looked at all the old games in the 90's you'd probably find a hell of a lot of bad adventure games, too. Just everyone seems to forget the bad ones over time.

Bodybuilding - "Bodybuilding is the process of developing muscle fibers through the combination of weight training, increased caloric intake, and rest."

A sport is not defined by the league it is contained in. If I play soccer regularly I can call myself a soccer player. Just because I don't compete does not nullify the activity that I've been doing. You might not be able to call Valentino a competitive or professional bodybuilder, however, regardless of steroids he is a bodybuilder. I think people associate the term bodybuilder as only including competitive bodybuilding, which just isn't the case.

Big Brother
Quote
Do you call IFBB judges "bodybuilders", since they too are products of the environment? How about the scientists that synthesize the supplements? Are they bodybuilders?

If the judges or scientists participate in bodybuilding, then yes.

Helm
Quote
Bodybuilding for me is an expression of pathological narcissism (LET'S GET BIG! LET'S PUMP IRON WOO!) and has no redeeming factors. That's just an opinion though, you might find it annoying, you know?

I think bodybuilding in moderation has definite benefits. As with most things, moderation is the key word.

QuoteGregg Valentino isn't a bodybuilder, Big Brother?
Quotethat seemed snide, less of an actual question and more of a correction. If you don't care whether or not he's a bodybuilder, why did you EVEN ASK ME???

Um, because it is a snide comment, and regardless of whether or not Valentino fits in your definition of bodybuilding doesn't mean it doesn't fit into his. If you reread his post you'll realize he doesn't care what you classify the man as, he's already classified him by his definition. To argue about being snide, seems moot when you call him Telemachus.

Quote
Why must you challenge things for the sake of being fractious? When corrected, you fall back on an alternate definition of your own invention. If you don't care, why do you argue? Just....annoying.

I don't think he was challenging things for the sake of being fractious, I think he was challenging because he was actually correct through his definition. Just as you are correct through your definition. And he's arguing for the same reason you're arguing, because he thinks he's correct, and gosh darn it, it's also fun. Helm can be quite annoying, but usually that's because he generally has sound and reasonable logic that is usually well written, and it's hard to argue against that. Also he's Greek.

I don't like the fact that when I go to a restaurant, I have to give a tip to my waiter/waitress. I'm not stingy in this area, generally I give 20% or more, I simple think that the cost of waitresses should be accounted for in the cost of food. I worked in a grocery store for five years, which was constantly full, and I could work just as much as any waiter/waitress and they'd pull just as much money as me in a night as I'd get in a week (part-time work). I dealt with a lot more people, and a hell of a lot more money, and yet my wages were significantly less. However, I still managed to work as hard as I could, without having to be offered tips. It's not that I don't respect my servers, my sister was a server and I've heard many horror stories from her, but it's not like customers at grocery stores are all lovey dovey, they're not.

There are arguments to the other side. They don't make a consistent paycheck, some days being better than others. They get bad customers who don't tip nearly what they should. If there is something wrong with the cooks, the server is more often blamed by the customer. It's not an easy job. I just don't like it.

I also don't like how people have begun to assume that people have to tip on taxes. I argued with my roommate who is a server, and told him that the tip is a percentage of the food, not the money you give the government. His argument was that because of inflation, that a percentage on the taxes was called for. Which didn't make sense because he's taking a percentage of the cost of something, if there is inflation, than the cost of the food will go up, and he'll end up, essentially, getting more money.

I also don't like that the prices for alcoholic drinks aren't always on the menu. But I can at least understand the reasons for it.

General Discussion / Re: MSPaint
Wed 07/03/2007 04:34:24
I feel that if your not artistically inclined using MSPaint isn't really going to hinder you over using other paint programs. Yeah, it isn't a great program, but because I tend not to be interested in art myself, I'm far less prone to dig into all aspects that a decent graphics utility will offer. If you're at least somewhat interested in art, though, MSPaint should probably be avoided.

And I thought I was imagining that 3.1's spray affect was better. I'd seemed to remember it being different, but I couldn't recall how.

QuoteIsn't the freedom to exchange freedom for safety an example of freedom?

It seems paradoxical, as mentioned, but the answer is no. The decision itself might be based on the freedoms I have, but after the decision is made, I have limited my freedom. Since I am a dynamic being, I might not like the choices I made previously, and may yet still be bound to them, regardless of the fact that I no longer wish to be bound. I could eleborate more, if you don't find my logic to be correct.

Quote
Frankly, I believe that religious considerations should always take a back seat when it's a matter of public safety. If a particular religious sect doesn't believe in medicine and instead trusts in god to heal them, should their children be exempted from the usual childhood innoculations?

While, I personally, agree that religion shouldn't take as big a part in our decision making. I do think, though, that if you're a religious person, you should have the ability to decide whether or not you want your kid to have a vaccine. You shouldn't, however, be able to decide if anyone outside your family should have to, or not have to take a vaccine. It should be a personal decision, and if that decision is based on religion, than so be it. If a parent doesn't want their kid to have a vaccine because they're afraid of their kid becoming sexually active, it's really up to the parent. Regardless of the fact that the cancer might be contracted in other ways. They should be free to decide these things by their own set of personal beliefs, not mine or anyone elses. And I should be able to decide these things by my own beliefs, and not be bound by someone elses.

I'm not sure in which direction I should be arguing. Should I go to the theories of what I think is right or wrong, or point out the actualities of the current situation.

Driving: In theory it would be great if we were free to not buckle up and do whatever we wanted, like talk on cell phones. In actuality, this is the case. The right to travel is a fundamental right that the goverment can not take away from you, or use goverment action against you for it, as long as you're not damaging property. The only time you're really not allowed this right, is (for some reason), if you're driving with commercial purposes (I'm not sure why). However, there are a couple of things that prevent this from actually happening. One of the biggest reasons you have, is with a drivers liscence comes a contract that waives your rights to certain freedoms, and bounds you to the rules of the State. Even though this is a fundamental right, the beliefs of your law enforcers, legislators, and courts have been in error for the a while. Which means, even though you may be excersizing your right to this freedom (assuming you don't have liscence), the way the sytem works, makes it very difficult to get away with this right.

I, honestly, do think giving up some freedoms for some safety, isn't bad. It's only bad, when it's forced upon everyone. Giving up certain freedoms should be left to the individual.  (Under the logic that freedom doesn't cause injury on a person or their belongings).

Truly, I don't understand how there's an argument here. I don't see this as being that negative of a thing. However, I do agree that people should be given a choice. Moreover, people ARE given a choice. You just read an article, and are inflamed by it, but the things it doesn't mention, is that each state has to provide for a way to waive the use of a vaccine. People have the freedom not to take this vaccine if they want, assuming their intelligent enough to find out what paperwork needs to be filled. I have avoided many vaccines I "needed" to take this way. There is no way for them to force you to take anything, because they have to provde for religious and personal beliefs. So stop arguing about not having freedom, you do have freedom, you just have to sign shit for it.

I agree. Once again, I must point out that the rating system isn't for the game author. It's for people who are seeking games. And regardless of your love for music, most people are not searching for games on the criteria of music alone. I don't really think the numbers that you get through voting is going to point out what you did right or wrong in your music. That only a detailed response or review, will fully give you constructive feedback. If I get a 73% on graphics, there's very little I can do with that number. Wheras, we have a forum for the whole purpose of people critiquing your work. Most of any productive criticism will be well written, and won't be converted into a numerical score, just make sure you stress that you'd like criticism whenever a game is released with your music.
