QuoteBut about 50% of Ren and Stimpy is unwatchably bad...

That does not disqualify the fact that it seems this is Ren and Stimpy influenced.

PS Ren and Stimpy (the original ones) are quite funny. This flash was funny too. A bit rough around the edges, but it had some funny moments.

Because the engine is always changing, if CJ supported a AGS pack, he'd have to make sure each file in the pack would work with the new engine. It's much easier to just point to where plug-ins and such can be found, and not be liable if they don't work. By making an official pack you just put a bigger burden on CJ.

General Discussion / Re: Defragmentation

Defragging once a month is excessive, in my oppinion. Maybe twice a year. I really don't see that much of a marked improvement after defragging. Not in todays, computers, anyway. It's a good thing for your computer, but if you're doing it for speed, it's not going to boost performance enough to make much of a difference.

General Discussion / Re: I just got robbed.

I'm positive it wasn't a prank. My roomates and I do pull pranks on each other, but nothing to this degree.

The situation has actually been resolved. Suprisingly hours after my roomates found out about the theft. One of my roomates passed our neighbor (who's town house is linked to ours), and told him to be carefull that we had just been robbed of two amps. Our neighbor told them that was stange because his roomates (three guys who shared one of the four bedrooms together, so that they could split the rent already split in four, into three again), had just come by some amps, and told my roomate to come in and look. Sure enough, it was our amps, and they had a box with all our stuff in it, apparently ready to be sent out to a friend of theirs.

They weren't at home, then, but when they came home, they were arrested on the spot. These are guys I see almost everyday, and I'm congenial to. The cops told my friend, that this is a fairly common practice. The people you see all the time, know when you are in or not in your house. Apparently, they got drunk and decided it was a good idea to break into their neighbors house.

QuoteThat's just baffling. Why would a robber spend time with porn at a time like that, and why would he steal pins? Are you sure it wasn't some prank Cheesy?

As we found out, they had been drunk, so there ability to be logical was impared. They apparently just stole a bunch of random crap that didn't really make sense. That said, I've been drunk an uncountable number of times, and never have I had the inclination to break into someones house and rob them of anything. So if/when it goes to court, I intend to make sure they're found guilty.

The thing that pisses me off, aside from them drinking our beer, is that I had thouroughly cleaned my room after I left, and when I come back I have to do it all over again, with the addition of having shards of glass lying on my bed and on the carpet. But I'm really just glad the situation was resolved so quickly.

If the guy spent some time to look at porn on my computer, I'm pretty sure we can rule out that he has access to a computer, and uses ebay.

General Discussion / I just got robbed.

Isnt' life interesting. I just got a call from my roomate that our house was broken into. I'm staying at my parents, and can't get over there for another month before I make a police report, of course. They broke my window, and stole maybe twenty dollars from me.

As I'm staying at my parents house for the summer, and working full time, I don't have time to go down there and assess the damages. But they left my computer, and my games, and books. Or at the very least, didn't take all of them, but I won't really know what they stole for about a month and a half. They apparently left my room in disarray, which of course nullifies the ten hours I spent reorganising my room before I left. I made sure eveything that was important to me was still there. But once again, I can't really assess what they've stolen until I go there myself. They might have stolen my check book, but as I ran out of checks, hopefully, nothing will come to pass.

I'm glad I was smart enough to take all my DVD's with me, which I might leave at my parents house, when I go back. Probably the worst thing they did, was apparently went on my computer and looked at porn...which as it turns out, at the very least, tells us when they broke in.

I didn't really have any expensive jewlery or anything I couldn't do without, other than my computer, trombone, and some books. So I'm not horrible. My other roomate had a lot of things stolen, but they generally stayed away from anything big, so I guess it was a small job. The stuff they stole from my roomate, like fraternity pins, is unique enough to find them out, if they try to go to a pawn shop. Which is how my roomate tracked someone down who had stolen something from his car last year. So I can only hope that they try to sell the stuff they stole.

Whether, it's noticable or not, there is a link between one aspect of a game to another. By aspect I mean graphics, music, story, dialog, etc...

Obviously, these aspects are linked in the fact that added together they create the game. But there also linked in how they affect each other. For instance graphics and sound have a strong link. If a room looks scary, the music and sounds will also lend towards giving an atmosphere of fearfullness. But I want to take this link, and apply it with the evolution of technology.

Using music and graphics again. Take an old school game. We first started out with the ability to use very few colors, maybe 16. Of course, the ability for the computer to play music was limited to the computers internal speaker, which if you've ever heard it play music, is nice if you like different pitches of beeps. But let's bump up the graphics to 256...now we need to bump up the ability for the computer to play even better sound. I'm not saying that one led to the other, these things were naturally going to come about. But if we increase the graphics more, let's just skip ahead to today, with 3D getting closer to photo realism. Regardless of the fact that there can be some good music made using MIDI's, we need more. This isn't a bad thing, but you can't just slap on MIDI music to game with todays standard graphics...regardless of how good the music is. As graphics go up, so to does music.

This almost goes without saying, they play off each other well for creating atmosphere/mood. As these two are closely related, they're relationship is apparently direct. But what about the story or puzzles? Are these linked to graphics and sound. If I make a game with 3d graphics and full orchestrated music, should I expect that the story be improved as well? Improvement of story is subjective to oppinion, naturally, but can I expect a well written, interesting, more involved story than years past?

Should my puzzles be more intricate? I have more room to flesh out a story line, shouldn't my puzzles be fleshed out as well. Working with the better environment, my character has 3D to work with, yet in most games it's really essentially down to two dimensions. It's very rare that a puzzle in an adventure game is made to adapt to the 3d environment. Rather we just stick in older conventions, that worked previously, but now the player just has more to look at.

Let's take The Longest Journey as an example of a new game and analyze it (I haven't played Dreamfall yet, otherwise I would use this). Graphics, sound, and storyline are more fleshed out than games of the past. But the puzzles remains pretty much the same. And although the dialog was a lot heavier, it hasn't changed from 2-dimensions. I'm not saying that it should, but perhaps the problem adventure games are having as of late, is bringing certain things to a new level.

All the aspects of the game are linked somehow. And as one improves, it only seems naturaly that others should improve, as well. But it seems that while we are making breakthroughs in some areas, others are being left behind, because they worked previously. So I just want to discuss what we think hasn't been improved. What needs revamping?

Graphics, Sound, Story: Imroved
Puzzles, (Adventure Game) mechanics, dialog: Needs Improvement

so...uh...discuss.

I think the main problem is us. We're completely spoiled, and any minor convenience puts us off. Regardless of the fact that I'm able to save about four hours of my life by registering for classes on-line. I don't have to wait at the DMV for a new liscence, just did it all on-line. But if I have to wait one minute of my life on something, it pisses us off. Take life for what it is, a collection of inconveniences, which give us something to talk about.

Why exactly are you using the command line for this program anyway? Get an IDE like netbeans (it's free), as well as the actual Java libraries (if you haven't done so already), and try that out.

General Discussion / Re: My Knee Locked!
Sat 17/06/2006 18:11:44
I googled Knee Lock real quick and came up with this article

http://www.mothernature.com/Library/Bookshelf/Books/16/127.cfm

Your knee is nothing to play games with. I injured me knee a couple years ago and my knee has never been the same. Sometimes it will be quite normal, then other times I will step the wrong way and I'll be limping for a couple days. This isn't related to your knee, but being a person who has a knee problem, it really affects your life.

The worst feeling I ever had when waking up though, was the inability to move anything for a few seconds. Almost as if I was paralyzed for a few seconds. It's actually called sleep paralysis, and apparently it's quite normal, but it is terrifying.

As an addict of something else entirely, I can completely understand what you're talking about. Mind you, I'm refering to caffiene, and the method of injection, coffee. Of course, being addicted to coffee does not affect your life the way alchohol does. However, almost everyday I tell myself, I will stop drinking this stuff. And everyday, there's a cup in my hand. And I just got off a almost solid year of avoiding coffee. When I moved I didn't put the pot in the kitchen, and got rid of soda as well. Soon the soda came back, and then coffee followed suit. Naturally, I start drinking coffee again when I stop drinking alchohol. I don't think I ever had an alchohol problem, but when I started noticing that I could drink a hell of a lot the whole night and not feel drunk...I decided maybe I needed a vacation from it. It hasn't been too hard not drinking, but occassionally I will really want a beer (like now).

I'd say if alchohol is affecting your job and your love life, that there is a problem. How you go about stopping it will ultimately be up to you. I don't agree with the 24 hours thing, then you'll just reward yourself 24 hours later with alchohol. You need to fine a frame of time long enough where you no longer need it. Maybe a month, maybe a year, maybe forever...it's up to you. People might have more problems than you, but it's not like there's a limit to how many people are allowed at AA. If you have a problem get help, and screw everyone else.

This is more than a bump than to add new information.

I think this site is a great idea. Right now it's member base is on the weak side, but if you're interested in going into this industry, this site has potential to grow.

Quotei think the real reason why they switched movies is because kentucky fried movie sucks ass compared to sin city.

That's like comparing apples to oranges. Those movies are in no way in the same genre, and will naturally appeal to different people. And the choice to take it off the screen wasn't made by the whole bus, it was made by one person in charge, who didn't want to get in trouble for showing nudity. Sin City's nudity is almost non-existent, comparatively.

Quoteum, did you even watch the movie or did you just cover your eyes during the "bad parts"? sin city's man characters are prostitutes and the movie has scenes of prostitutes having sex (not to mention the movie has lots of bare titts).

Covering my eyes probably would have been the best thing to do. I didn't enjoy the movie.

I think the general trend here is that those of a younger age who are actually affected by parental stickers, are more prone to be against it. Of course, when the younger generation write things like "to the op, fuck parentel advisory!" you can't much value their oppinion.

Let me start out by saying, I do not like cencorship. I don't think curse words are really that bad, but I never use them. I don't think a kid will go bad because they've seen or heard something naughty. More likely, they won't understand what was said or what they saw. The only reason I don't like it, is because people are going to learn these words regardless.

That being said. I do feel that everyone has a right to there own oppinions on such matters, and if you don't want your kid to listen to curse words, than you should have that right. It's not like the stickers hurt anyone. And as a person who doesn't have kids yet, I have no idea how I really will feel on the issue when the time comes. So why deny my future self the option of doing what I think it right or wrong at the time?

One of the biggest problems I find in a lot of things of this nature. Is they're adamant about one thing, but blind to another. For instance, I was on a bus and brought the movie, Kentuck Fried Movie, to watch. Now this bus-ride was fourteen hours, and we're all of us college students. This movie has some nudity...which I had forgot about when I brought it, but they made me take it off immediatly. OK, fine...if you're scared people are going to be offended, I can live with that. It's the fact that they replaced the movie with Sin City. So it's fine if we show people getting killed, but god forbid a tit is shown on screen!

By looking up the term puzzle real quick (from dictionary.com) Puzzle: "To baffle or confuse mentally by presenting or being a difficult problem or matter." and Obstacle: " One that opposes, stands in the way of, or holds up progress."

I like the term obstacles much more than the term puzzle. It allows for some more abstract ways to hold the player back, than the term puzzle. The difference between the two, it would seem, is really whether or not whatever is holding us back is confusing to us or just difficult. So a puzzle to someone, might be an obstacle to another person, and vica versa. Obstacles are more apparent in other games, where it's obvious what you have to do, like in FPS's...to advance kill these people. But there definately have been adventure games with obstacles in them. Ex. SQ3, avoid killer robot in begining. There's really nothing hard to think about, just avoid being detected by it, by being quick about whatever you do.

This brings to mind something about puzzles, that I've preached before. Lucas Arts and a lot of newer games have coddled us adventure gamers. I say if you have an obstacle, where you're character has potential of being in danger, allow said character to die if he messes up. You can allow the player to restore or start at a point right before death, but once it's known you can't die, it makes obstacles like that non-sensical. Why try to make a scary forest, if there is no danger? If you don't want to make a game where you're character dies, that's fine. I just think that a puzzle has more weight, and more of an enjoyment factor if you can die. I just remember feeling fear for my character, and enjoying it more.
