I think the default art doesn't have to be updated. It's just a default, how many people really need to be using it? If people want to submit their backrounds, sprites, and music, I'm sure Insta Game would love such contributions. If anything the default art is just there as a place holder for the real art, and so people new to ags can fiddle around a bit, and see how things work.

That said, really I don't care THAT much on the issue...as it has no effect on my gamemaking.

Played it, very nice little game. A few bugs

Spoiler
After you get rid of the mouse, and talk to the hole, there is still a squeek.  And when you go upstairs you should make a script that will let you go up if you have the inventory item.

Not bug, but problem. Your inventory items don't show where they are active, and it seemed there was a pixel hunt to get the batton to hit the stair support. And yes it's a short game, but try to always have a menu screen before the intro.

Other than that, graphics were pretty good. And it had its funny bits.

If your working with our sewers, waterlines, and more; than I'm scared if you can't figure out the coordinate system. Scares me!

I tend to agree with Las here, I'm looking at some of the crap dialog and thinking of the other scripts, and they were filled with crap too, but it works on screen. Anyway, it's the 4th in a well established series, there is no way people are ever going to like it anyway because we love the first 3 too much to open our minds to something new.

I enjoyed death in Sierra games, the thing to do it always have a save in the begining on eac"section" of those games. A death in a game of todays expected full length, they would be really annoying, but old sierra games, when you really look at them don't have that many puzzles comparatively. So in order to lenghten the game, the walking dead was invented.

I always save as namex, this allows no confusion as to who's save slot it is when other people may play the game. I generally use three saves and cycle between them. Perhaps sierra trained me to save often, but I've had occurences when there has been a glitch somewhere, and it's better if I just save at key points in the game. Also, say in TLJ...while death is impossible and there is no walking dead, sometimes I would be stuck, and it would be better if I went to a previously saved game and talked to other people to get hints. (I know there was a journal, and I used it, but I didn't really want to sift through it all to find important information).

BUMP!

Indeed I would, if say perhaps, I wasn't the only person playing the game. When I am home, both my sister and myself tend to play games. Of course, this depends on how short the game is. Still, I see no reason to get rid of a multiple slot saving system, just in case you want to go back somewhere in the game.

I don't think Raggit means true love, as in they'd want to marry the character and frolic on a beach together in happiness for the rest of eternity, Jackhammer.

Hmm...that's a good one. What does make a character lovable. I don't necessarily think it's his/her looks, so much. Look at some of the old games, where one could only see fifty or so pixels that defined a character, big blocky things, where one could just really only determine different characters from different games, by the colors chosen for them. Yet, some of those old games I have loved. I'm a huge fan of SQ, and I find Roger Wilco to be a great, and lovable character.

Perhaps it's because I frew up with these games. But I think it has to do with the fact that Roger himself, while seemingly inept (I mean you start out as a Janitor and end up as one), suprisingly is thrown in situations where "he" uses his own ingenuity to save the universe, and he's just the average joe. It could be that, alone that makes him such a great character.

Look at Manny, in Grim Fandango, he was just an average guy down on his luck. You could relate to him. But we should keep things in perspective. We could only love the characters, because while yes they are most of the time average, they are seemingly one of the most normal characters in the game (Note this does not apply to all games, take The Longest Journey, several characters in that are "normal"). It's because they are the most normal, that they can provide a genuine reaction to zanyness (even if they join along).

So you must show that they are really human, a love interest it a good plot device to show this. It's an emotion most people have felt. The desire for a partner in life, a shared interest.

Also, I think that expression of the characters face can make the character more lovable. One of the things I enjoyed in MI3 that I think MI4 didn't do so well (well, just one of the things, as I could probably make a whole list a couple pages long), was that in the third one Guybrush had some facial expressions that were downright funny, and also allowed the player to kind of see what his reaction's were to everything.

While we can't relate to a zombie pirate out for our soul, I think it's safe to say that we can, most of us, relate to wanting to achieve something, and yes there are a lot of us who want to become pirates. So the character must have some motive in life, Leisure Suit Larry's motive was to get laid, something most guys can relate to.

So yes, it all boils down to what the character can show you, that people have a common bond with. Of course, great writing can't hurt, but that's part of it.

There was a game called lighthouse made by Sierra several years ago, but I never finished because of lack of time/interest. And I can't say that it was a game that was raved about, but it dealt with multi-twisted-universes of some sort.

Only one AGS game has managed to spook me a bit, and that P:DA, and only in that dream cutscene (it was already late at night when I played it, and I might have been tired, but it was kind of creepy).

QuotePirate Jack.. You little fuck.

LGM, you should know betterthan using such a word. Tsk tsk tsk.

QuoteSince when is being fat a reason to hate someone. If fat people were a race you'd be a racist.

Guess what, fatty mcfat fat, fat people aren't a race. And, while, I personally, don't agree with racism. I see nothing wrong with hating fat people. Fat people symbolise laziness. Now naturally, there are those who have conditions, so it's not their fault that their fat.

QuoteI'm fat.. So what? I act like any other non-fat person does. It doesn't mean I like being fat or that it's good or better to be fat. It's just the way it is.. Don't persecute people because of the way they look unless it was a deliberate choice.

But you don't act like any non-fat person (aka, skinny or slim person). And unless you have some condition where it doesn't matter if you just ate celery you'd still be fat, guess what, you choose to be fat. The blame falls fully towards yourself, and perhaps (at an earlier time), your parents for not eating healthy and excersizing. You make that choice, which justifies Lay's oppinion.

QuoteJesus Chris, some people can be so thick-headed sometimes

Obviously, we're not talking about your penis. Speaking of which, how long has it been since you've seen it?

I got a joke for everybody

Q: How many LGM's does it take to screw in a lightbulb?
A: 0, since when was it possible for an LGM to screw anything?

Har har har! Fat people are fun to make fun of.

Note: Anything said in my post was only to describe a point, and LGM, while it might be going too far, I have shown a plausable reason for hating fat people. I don't really share this view, but you can't just go make fun of people because they have an oppinion. Also, if you we're to measure Pirate Jacks posts witha  sarcasm meter, you'd see he was just joking around. So don't be so quick to take offense, at anything. Even the above...as it was just to make a point.

My roomate last year always needed to have something playing while he was going bed. I, personally, don't like any noise. But I managed to get a goodnight sleep most of the time, except for the one night my roomate decided to play rap (which he listened to in the day time), at night. And that kept me up all night, so I made him promise never to play it again at night. Which he abided by, as I was compromising, by even allowing him to play music. Still, those strong beats and rythms can just drive you mad. The roomate before that used to have like 20 songs he'd play over and over again, which even if they were good songs (which they weren't), it would still get annoying.

Still, I don't know about you guys, but our dorms had a rule about noise after 10 or 11 pm, I'm sure there must be similar rules. I would knock on their door and ask if they'd turn it down, first. If they didn't I'd get someone with a bit more power.

Headsets, though, indeed are the greatest invention. Wish I still had mine.

Wow, the big 22...you're already starting to lose you hair. I didn't want to say anything at Golves(2003), but now that it's your birthday, I feel obligated. Don't worry too much about your loss of hair, I'd be more worried about your bowels. Have a happy birthday you old fart.

I'm confused here, because I didn't think anything PhilRobert said was offensive, so just incase I wasn't remembering right I reread his ten posts. Nope, nothing offended me.

QuoteYou´ve been an arse... You weren´t not only happy not using AGS, but also you bashed us saying, more or less "Fuck you, your engine sucks and you all suck!!!"

More or less? He didn't say fuck you your engine suck at all. In fact his post seemed friendly and informative, even if some of his arguments fell flat. There was no bashing...he just thought he had found something better, and now he found out he was wrong. So he apologized for trying to tell us earlier that he had, in a nice way, said he didn't want to use AGS. Put him in jail!

QuoteAnd now you come back crowling? You had your chance to behave normaly and you passed them for your asshole. I hope that this time you became a "normal" member, but if you want to try to have another laugh among the AGSers I hope that CJ won´t forgive you again and set a huge BAN on you.

Behave normaly? I thought we were a collective of unique individuals? Are we all to become part of the collective, with no longer a thought about our own thoughts and oppinions? There is no termed, "normal", AGSer. And I don't think PhilRobert's had a laugh at our expense. And when did CJ forgive him...there was no reason to forgive him, he did nothing wrong, as far as I know. And if CJ didn't put a ban on kikme, why would he do so to PhilRoberts? Aren't you overreacting, because he happened to have a difference of oppinion?

QuoteGood luck in your new AGS experience, but have in mind that many newbies have gained experience by a silent attitued of working, reading, and serious posting, and you´re far away from that respect because of your unfortunately start. You´ll really need that luck, matey...

You should take your own advise.

People...if you just re-read his post, you'll see he wasn't being anti-AGS at all. He was merely stating he thought he found something more suitable for his tastes. There should be no slates to be wiped clean as he didn't do anything wrong. Or am I wrong in thinking that people can't have a difference of oppinion? He's already apologised (for what, I don't know), so quite bitching about it.

And Phil welcome back to AGS, come and go as you like. Tell us what you like, or don't like about the engine. That is what this community is for. If a community can't take some constructive criticism, then I don't see how we can claim to be this mature community thats special. I'm sure CJ wasn't hurt by what Phil had to say, and neither should you.

I don't honestly have a firm oppinion on this at all.

I generally don't think holding your children near wild animals that have a possibilty of killing injuring yourself, let alone your child, is a good idea.

However, to the same extent, he knows more about crocodiles then I do. There were seven men to spot him. The child is his...and no harm came to him.

So I'm caught between the fact that I think he's crazy and also the fact that he's more knowledgable about crocodiles than I am. I'm sure there was a slight danger of the child being harmed...as there is a danger when a child is playing sports. And just like those parents take a knowing risk when allowing htere kid to play sports, so too did Irwin.

So in the end, I really feel it's his problem if his kid ends up getting injured/killed. And I feel that legally nothing should be done. It's his kid, let him raise the kid how he wants. There are far worse parents out there the Steve Irwin.

QuoteSo when I said that relating to characters wasn't important, I was thinking about comedies: the only thing I ever watch.

I don't agree. Look at Everybody Loves Raymond (and yes, I am well aware of the fact that not everybody loves him), I think the show is funny because I can relate to them. The characters are extreem sometimes, but there is a lot of truth in that show as to how people feel towards there family. I think that's the reason people either like this show or hate it. Because you can either relate to the characters, or your family make up is different, so you don't see the comedy (not that this applies to everyone, sometimes your taste in humor is different, too).

And I do see shows that are *good* from way back when. I think the shows I mentioned would be considered *great* tv. They are shows I enjoy watching and find they are worth my time. Nostalgia? There are plenty shows that I don't like that are old. Like Bewitched. Anyway, the argument about nostalgia doesn't make sense, because you'd only be nostalgic about something you enjoyed or found funny previously.

Actually, it's because it is free that CJ can do anything he wants to. And I don't think CJ is about to program a false virus. In fact, in his latest version the x-mas joke isn't even present.

So far you are the only person who has this view that CJ's joke went too far. Like I said, you can only get offended by something you want to get offended by. But truthfully, you've probably offended CJ more, by not taking this to him personally. If you were offended by his program, then you should have complained to him, without involving the community.

I find this thread that you started is going too far. You didn't want an adult conversation (only high-schoolers and people from college), and look at how people have responded. So people here have been treating you like a kid, isulting you, childishly, but you have been acting like a kid, in being too stubborn to examine our arguments. I can see if you were pissed if CJ made a real virus. But a joke is a joke, it is not made to offend. CJ's intention was not to offend. He made a joke that was easily bypassed, and so you lost a day with AGS? But what your doing to yourself is far worse, than CJ's joke. You're alienated yourself from the community (as no one has shared your view on the joke), and how do you expect the community to treat you or a game created by you?

Actually, one new show that I am fond of...that I didn't mention was Monk. It's not a sitcom, but I feel it's well written and funny.

I was never one for Seinfeld...I thought they complained just way too much, and they weren't nice people at all.

American tv has some greats, under its belt, it just seems rather stagnant at the moment. Though, someone mentioned SCRUBS, which I found funny, but it was never able to make it into my schedule. We have Dick van Dike, I Love Lucy, Bob Newhart, Newhart, Taxi, All in the Family, tons more. I'm certain a good comedy will come soon, hopefully.

American telivision sitcom wise, is still suffering from all the reality show wave. They're going to try and bring sitcoms back into television in the not so far future. They're already starting, but most of the shows, if not all, aren't worth watching. And, no, you're right, you really don't feel for any of the American sitcom stars of today. There are some funny shows, but the situations and characters are so characterized or ridiculous, no one could really relate to them. Not to mention, that the new wave of sitcoms have this fat or unattractive husband with this gorgeous wife.

The best place to look for great American television is TV Land. I'm a fan of the old shows. There is only one sitcom show that I watch that's running today, and that's Everybody Loves Raymond, but even that's starting to slowly go in a downward spiral.

There is Frasier, if your looking for something intelligent. I don't enjoy the show, that much, but it's worth a try I guess.

I don't think you're bitter. But I don't watch too much tv, myself. So maybe I am bitter. I like Conan O'Brian, even though it's no sitcom. In a few years we'll probably get a few better sitcoms, when the mass is sick of reality tv.
